In today's video I'm going to dispel some myths about traffic lights, teach you about the different kinds of traffic light sensors and how to position your motorcycle to not get stuck!
We look at all the different kinds of sensors used at traffic lights, such as the induction loop, infrared, microwave and video. I also teach you where to place your bike to make sure you're in the right spot to trigger the lights and not wait there for ages.

I was the electrical test engineer for the department of transportation in my state. A few pointers for ground loops. First, as you approach a light, try to run over the advance detection loop. This is the ground loop a couple of car lengths before a stop line. This will send a pulse detection to the signal controller. Second, I do not recommend buying a magnet hoping it will place a detection call to the signal controller. Rather, simply shut off your bike and restart. The field generated by your starter is enough to affect the ground loop. I've tested this in the lab and used it for the last 8 years on the road successfully.

You sir, are a hero. I have a sumo DRZ400 in AZ, where these strips are at 90% of lights, and it's usually a 50/50 as to whether or not it'll pick up my bike.

Yes! Was here to post this. A restart has always worked for me. Not sure if newer bikes pump out the same EMI noise as the older bikes I was used to, but I think it still works fine.

Hate it when a car behind doesn't understand when I ask them to move up so they can trigger the sensor. They look at you like you're and idiot or crazy lol. I've even had someone give me the finger because they thought I was complaining. Man, I am complaining! Complaining that this light doesn't notice my fata**.

NC here. I've done it with a cop behind me. Bit of a gamble, but they didn't pursue. Either they knew the law (unlikely) or didn't feel like putting in the effort.
As a signal engineer for 30+ years and a biker for even longer the most sensitive part of the loop is the corners. Run over a corner of the loop with your wheel and stop with a wheel on the corner will guarantee detection. Do not sit in the middle of the loop having only run over a single bit of loop. The wheels a 30mm off the loop will be picked up a lot better than an engine 300mm from the loop, provide the wheels are conductive. A corner will pick up even a pushbike wheel. When testing the loops we can use a hacksaw or a few twists of cable to trigger the detection

@@svpmvp2433 actually red lights and stop signs are a matter of consideration when there is traffic... and of course they are the responsible thing to pay attention to and I don't condone just speeding through them but, in an actual court of law find it by the US Constitution in contrast to each States Constitution, one would have to have proof that the decision to roll through a stop sign or run through a red light had caused harm or endangered someone and if there was nobody around the officer and the judges can go f*** themselves because constitutional law doesn't even have the ability to be used to force us to wear seat belts or helmets for that matter.... but our parents and grandparents and great-grandparents were suckers in the majority and that's why we have economic discrimination and administrative crimes based on fear paranoia and a traumatized extreme circumstance that oppresses American people and families and causes a lot of damage.
.... but anybody that thinks that our concentration can be used to allow someone to be totally Lawless and irresponsible in regards to everyone else is wrong.
... in the end it's all about the paperwork and the pressure and threats that they put against us that we can Count Their paperwork with.
.... this also extends to things like registrations and titling and Licensing, but I will say that I do believe a plate for identification only is necessary and insurance is the responsible thing in today's overpopulated and busy areas.

Some cities in Florida have red light cameras. At night sometimes those lights don't turn green.
I wait for one..
It will be a cold day in hell b4 I will sit through 2 light cycles and then go. After making a complete stop and if it clear to go 5 maybe 10 seconds later I'M GONE.

same technology @ the toll roads with cameras....ride the white stripe through as you pass under the cameras and they never know you are there...I conveniently do a lane change under the cameras....have yet to receive a bill in the mail
@@brianstokes7687 Hmmm... it wouldn't take much for the cameras to have a slightly wider field given more pixels in more recent cameras.
@@awuma camera has nothing to do with the ground loop your avoiding which triggers the camera to take a picture.
In my state and lots of states in the United States, you can run a red light at first safe chance after one complete cycle of not getting a green light.

PA also has this...its called ride on red
In Illinois you are allowed to run it after waiting 2 mins with no green.
The loop trick works. There’s a traffic light that you pass when entering/leaving my work. It WILL NOT switch unless I ride over the wire and stay there. I’ve sat there for quite a long time before I learned this trick.
Just saw this video. you got a chuckle out of me when you were sitting on your bike having coffee or tea while waiting for the light to change. I can definitely relate. I live in a rural area, and sometimes when I get off late, there is hardly any road traffic. occasionally I've had to run the light. I've contacted my local DOT and all they tell me, is that there might be an issue with the sensor. I've done what you have mention, but it's not working. next time I'll try what another poster recommends about restarting the bike and see what happens.
New rider here. I encountered this near my home. Yes i too thought the sensors were weight triggered. Now i know the truth. I've been running the red light but i'll try these tips next time.
What I've found is that there is absolutely no way a sportbike will trigger the magnetic loops. I've tried moving my bike, and putting the kickstand down, and even flashing my lights, in WA state. Nothing works. The only ferrous metal is the crankshaft, connecting rods, timing chain, camshaft, and transmission. It's not enough metal, and you'd have to be absolutely perfectly positioned to trigger the induction loop. It's better to just run the red light after a full cycle, which is legal. Or to simply avoid the intersection (best idea). You can easily avoid these desolate traffic lights in obscure roadways, by just planning your route. Following traffic on main roads, and avoiding stoplights altogether on side streets, is the easiest method.

This is excellent. I thought maybe I was just imagining things. One thing that people never think of, is to simply take a different route. More often than not, people don't plan ahead, and they try to pull their vehicle into terrible traffic conditions. When you notice a turn lane that has absolutely no cars, consider driving past it, and turning on a side street, instead of a traffic light. Simple.
This can only work in some areas. I frequently encounter 'stuck' red lights leaving places that are off a busy roadway. Last time I pulled into a hotel parking lot to make a legal U-turn, and was stuck at the light for a while before I checked traffic and pulled through the 🚦. Also if you're riding in a city with a lot of one ways or dead ends, you don't often have the choice to take a different route.
I've learned quite a bit about traffic lights the past year or so. This video is informative and well done. I always thought it was stupid to lay down fresh asphalt, then turn around and cut it up. There is one light near my work that never operates properly, and it's annoying when the car behind won't pull up close enough behind to trigger the sensor. I've learned if no car is around to just avoid the light.
Dude those wires are frail and heat sensitive. If you lay them down and then pour hot asphalt on top of it, you'll fry your circuits and anything else laid down. Road first. Sensors second.

I'll give this information a try. Thanks! I live in one of those "Dead Red Laws" and have gone during a very... very long Red Light. Basically treated it like it was a stop sign were I had to wait a couple of minutes before I could go.

GREAT info! I just checked, and my state allows riders to circumvent being stuck at a light. I have experienced this late at night and it's annoying af to be stuck with no car around to help trigger the light.

I just go right on red and go back through the other way.
I also go slowly through corner parking lots at notorious lights. Especially at night. And I’ve had cops sitting there and not have an issue.

@@Kwackajack Well, the two biggest issues I see with newer riders these days are target fixation and poor lane position. Since neither is natural or intuitive I figure it is 100% the fault of the older generation in failing to pass on what we know. Anything you could do to help new riders to understand the importance of either of these concepts would (I think) be a mitzvah. ✌️

Many state in America have laws that allow bikers to go on red after a certain wait period.
There is no choice but to just drive away, if the light doesn't change. But I don't think there is a law. I feel like they want motorcycles to suffer, everywhere except California.

In the U.S., the loops are circle shaped as well. I find that putting the kickstand pad down on the line works best.
Nicely done video! I've heard turning the bike on and off while sitting at the induction loops can sometimes trigger them too.
I live in an area that recently had the pavement at an intersection re-paved erasing the mag loop. Tried everything to set off the light but it didn't trigger. Ultimately, having a bunch of alternate routes that avoid the problem intersection helps.

I've told several of my family and friends about these loops (car drivers)...basically a magnetic sensor. Most people don't know about them. So many times I've told people to drive their cars forward just a few inches after being stuck behind drivers who are too shy to drive closer to the intersection and end up stopping short of the sensors. Excellent topic for a video, good job.

What I’ve learned is don’t stop in the center of the lane. As you approach the intersection take note of the cut out lines in the road where the wire sensors are to the left and right portion of the lane and stop directly above it as opposed to stopping in between them. Doing so gives you a better chance of the magnetic sensor detecting you.
Very good video. In many cases, only moving metal will induce a change in the magnetic field so I always try to weave the bike across the line before coming to a stop; and yes, I always stop directly over the line. A bike with an aluminum frame has a greatly reduced chance of triggering a loop detector. If it appears that the bike hasn't been detected, sometimes turning off the bike and engaging the starter is enough to induce the needed trigger, but you'd need to be right over the line. Although I've never had to test this in court, if it's clear that the bike hasn't been detected, I'll treat the light as defective, which in Ontario Canada would become a four-way stop and I'll simply proceed when it's safe.

I'm in ONT as well - problem is we now have those cash grab red light cameras and you'll never beat them in court no matter what.
@@ppower7945 Totally agree. I would never test that out at a camera intersection, or if I think a cop is close by. What I have done more than once is make a legal right turn, a legal U-turn and then a right turn. Far more dangerous than just running the light, I know.
A motorcycle cop in my town told me that after sitting through a few cycles, it's okay to safely move on. It happens to them as well.
Another cop told me the general rule they allow is to safely go after a few minutes. Typically it happens in turn only lanes where it's easy to judge when oncoming traffic passes and safe to make the turn.
California where I live has slowly been making the sensors more motorcycle friendly and I remember this began back when motorcycle enthusiast and then governor Arnold Schwarzenegger said that he'd get that program started. No need to force law abiding motorcyclists into law breakers and I'm sure there have been enough traffic court arguments to force the government to do something about it.

I had this on lutwyche road in Brisbane during peak hour a few years back. Had to get cars to go around me to trigger it then ride off after missing 3 sets of lights and cars filling up behind me. I wish your video existed then haha.
I know quite a few motorcyclists in the area I live in, I don't ride but since I like the cruising routes they do...I sometimes get an invite for the weekend rides and they put me up front...I drive a 2 door car and trip the lights for the group every time...makes the day more pleasurable for them.

I've learned to pull all the way up to the stop line and place my front wheel on the stop line itself. The induction loops where I live are close enough to the stop line that the motor is over the induction loop or very close to it. It works the majority of the time - I do have to admit I'm sometimes surprised when it does work though...

Good motorcycle instructors were teaching this in the 1980's ... and avoid riding on white lines especially in the rain and cornering.

You need to make it a goal to begin paying more attention to the world around you. Begin to notice everything. We don't want to become so apathetic and careless that we become drones. This video was awesome, and it's something they should teach in school (instead of the bullshit useless information).
I live in a small town and the main center of town red light sensor was not working for motorcycles, so I would circumvent this by slipping into an adjacent parking lot and bypassing the red light all together.
A local cop saw me do this late one night and stopped me.
I explained that the sensor on the light would not trigger for a motorcycle and he was cool about it.
We even filmed a short video on his cell phone so he could send it to city maintenance so they would address the issue.
The light now works perfectly.

I've tried to get people to move up and some don't, which makes me look like an idiot who's just randomly waving his hands. Most do move up, though, once they figure out the light's not turning green.

The problem is that nothing is going through those people's heads, or at least nothing related to driving. It's the same in other situations too. Today most drivers attention is on their phone or their "infotainment system" or something else going on inside their car. I've been riding since 1964 and never saw so many oblivious moronic drivers as I've been seeing in the last few years.
Probablycomes off like: "You! Get over here! I'm not fat so I could beat you up before the light changes!"
All my motorcycles have center stands. So when stopping for a red traffic light, I always stop exactly in the middle above the loop line, and then bring the center stand down with my left heel, so that both legs of the stand touch the ground on top of the line, and keep it there for a couple of seconds. So far this has always worked for me.

Years ago, I was a driver helper for UPS. There was a light with an infrared sensor on our route that would get stuck because of the low sun in the evening. Even the UPS truck wouldn't trip the light.
Legality or UPS policy is probably against this, but I would hop out and hit the crosswalk button when it got bad.

I basically already knew about everything that you said except for the "DEAD RED" law, which it showed that my state had that law but 9 times out of 10 I just run the red light anyhow. I ride a moped which has a hell of alot less medal than a motorcycle. TRAFFIC LIGHTS NEVER CHANGE FOR A MOPED, it doesn't matter if there is a car behind me or not, I AM GOING TO RUN A RED LIGHT WHILE I'M ON MY MOPED.

This was an interesting video. Been riding for years and driving a car for years I always figured it was some kind of roadwork cut out where they installed a scale after the asphalt had been laid down. Can't wait to get on the bike later and see if it actually works.

I'm seeing people in cars stopping 1-2 car lengths back so the sensor isn't tripped. It must be deliberate. Is there some hoax email that is conning people into this foolishness?
Yes!! I thought is was just overly polite drivers here in the South. Drives me crazy. I actually had a cop do that. I actually got off my bike after a few cycles of the light and that idiot just sat there looking at phone. I finally just ran the light.
Great vid! Very informative. Although, I wouldn’t recommend putting your kickstand down at a traffic stop as that would mean that your bike is in neutral, unless your bike doesn’t have an auto cut off when the kickstand is put down. Even then, you should always be ready to go and perform an evasive action to avoid potentially being rear ended by a vehicle.

I've been riding for 17 years and for me the magnets work very well, they do help in my neck of the woods and it does help to trigger the lights a lot of times if I'm by myself even the magnet will trip the light but good video thanks

I remember when Sydney had pressure pad triggers back in my teen years. They were like a heavy rubber garden hose mounted in a concrete base and the weight of the car squashed them enough to trigger the system. Those traffic counter hoses we sometimes see are much thinner than those old ones. However, the rubber back then became brittle over time and they would crack apart and no longer work. Many a time my step-father would ask me to get out and press the pedestrian button when the trigger wasn't working.

Good on you mate, being in Sydney I have faced this issue quite a few times, although i own a big Kawasaki Vulcan but even such a big bike with lots of metal fails to trigger the sensor some times.

Now I understand why these specific traffic lights near where I live never activate when I ride my bicycle, usually I just go on the pavement and go around because it never works :/ can’t wait to test this next time
I've been stuck a couple times extra early in the morning going to work. Thought about running the light, but you know that would be when the cop comes around the corner. So I put the kickstand down and quickly jet over to the crosswalk button hit it a few times and jet back. I turn my flashers on for extra security if you don't have flashers maybe a turn signal. You run the risk of your bike getting hit when it's unattended but also that early in the morning people really aren't paying attention for a bike stopped at a crosswalk anyway. The dead red lie in my state. If you're skipped two rounds you can go roll on red. Ride hard drive Safe

just one note police have told me that after 3 cycles if it hasn't gone green. you can go as long as its safe. I wouldn't do that with a red light camera there tho lol
I always flash my lights a few times. And most of the time it will change immediately

The tech at the parking garage I use told me the edge of the detector is most sensitive. Pull right over the tar seal on the edge of the detector. Works for me.
Pull over to the curb, get off and push the pedestrian button. It's better than waiting.

All the lights in my town don't turn green and I have to wait for a car to arrive behind me before it will allow me to pass. This information is super handy!!! I can now stop avoiding those routes and try putting center of bike over the lines :) my town is small so hopefully contacting the local council will work too if this trick doesn't help.
I have tryed everything mentioned and with one bike under 400 lbs, not much metal, I had lots of issues with lights changing for me. Here is what has worked for nearly all induction loop triggered lights. Very similar to what Kwackajack mentioned with a twist. When approaching the sensor aim at the corner so that you cross 2 wires and not just one. I then swerve across the remainder of the wire unitl I'm at the stop line. This works nearly every time even on my smallest bike. Just make sure to do this maneuver in your own lane. In high traffic areas the cars will trigger the light anyway.
I remember I was doing a long ride it was almost midnight completely empty road, sat at a junction looking at the camera debating if I should just go or not for 10min until somone came up behind me and triggered it lmao.
Ten minutes seems like a bit much. I run reds that late in my car. There's no point in waiting when the roads are empty.

Here in Wisconsin we have the Motorcyle Red Light Law, if the light fails to trigger after forty-five seconds you can look both ways to make sure traffic is clear and then proceed through the red light.
Trick the induction loop by adding magnets, specifically Neodymium magnets that will make your bike appear larger. Your typical refrigerator magnets will not work.
Back when I drove in London UK main roads into the city center were sequenced, so if you started off at green from the first one and kept between 29/30 mph you would clear the lot without stopping. I found a similar road set today in Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) it was fun the watch the boy racers, tearing away from one set of lights and catch them up at the next and I'd just glide through.
This happens to me all the time. I usually shuffle up (as you put it). Problem is, 90 percent of the time, the car driver won't move up further and trigger the light. Very frustrating when that happens.
I had a car the other day not trigger the lights for like 5 changes, I thought they were on the sensor but I guess not enough to trigger it. They ended up running the red arrow and triggering it.

Where I am bicycling is common enough that for many intersections they have a spot marked on the ground near the stop line of where to park your bike in order to trigger the light. Not sure if this is another smaller induction loop or it's just marking optimal positioning but they work really well
