    I am feeling energetic yet unmotivated today...? So, I'm rewarding myself for decluttering a little place with watching one of your videos and it's really helping! Yea! So far I have decluttered my kitchen table, bathroom counter, front entry drop zone, and living room couch! And I'm pretty much having fun!

    On the subject of useful sentimental items, I have my great grandma’s ladle and I use it to serve soup and I love it. Granny was always feeding people and making us feel welcome and loved and listened-to and I love feeding my kids with it and it reminds me to listen to them and love on them.

      My grandma handed down an icing spatula that has one serrated side and a smooth side, I use it for toast, bagels, much more. I don't even think she thought I would use it that much, but I love it! I am reminded how much she loved me every day❤️

    Your simple solution of taking it and putting it up right then is the advice of the century. I just decluttered my whole bedroom in about 30 minutes and had to leave the space about 150 times in the process but I don't have stuff in piles, things are put away where they go, and trash is gone. Yay! This works!!!

    Also thank you very much for walking through your process and being here for the overwhelmed. I'm 4 years into my decluttering process, made worse by moving into clutter left by previous owner. My declutter muscles are strong, but it is really hard for me to trash items that are "still good" when I can't find them a home. It's ok to trash items for your own mental health. I needed this reminder so thank you very much.

    Dana, I have to tell you that you are THE BEST decluttering expert I’ve come across in the 30+ years I’ve been struggling with getting my house in order. I started with Sidetracked Home Executives in the 80s ... their system worked for me on and off, but I don’t remember them dealing with decluttering that much. Our stepladder has some beautiful memories attached in the form of paint drips. It was one of our first purchases when we bought our house. It’s got memories of sooo much wallpaper removal as we made this house our home, as well as painting the nursery... and the kids’ various stages of growth as we updated their bedrooms.

    I obviously have hoarded and collected scissors. For whatever reason, I have no idea. I just realized I have 30 pairs of scissors in this big desk organizer thing that is meant for pens, pencils, post-it notes, etc. no wonder I can’t ever find a pen. They are all buried in scissors.

    • @moonxshakti
      @moonxshakti 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I have some scissors in organizing container in each room. They need to be handy. If they aren't, you will buy more.
      I use a pen holder box, open top, with a divider that makes 4 triangle holes, that I got for $1. (Think tissue box w no top and divider is x from above).
      I put scissors, pens, cutting blade, and tape. Now I always have handy scissors, neat and away, but don't have to buy more bc I've misplaced them all. They don't travel room to room bc they are always close.
      Ps can sharpen scissors by cutting aluminum foil, think 1 piece, 20 cuts.
      I only own scissors with comfy big finger holes. I do have separate hair or sewing scissors, bc they must be undamaged.
      Psps, a school might like extra scissors.

    I dislike swiffers because I feel like you're just redistributing the dust. Also they are disposable so add to the landfills. I dust like my mom does. One damp rag to wipe off the dust which sticks to the rag because it's damp, then a dry rag to dry the surface off. The rag can be rinsed out while you're still using it, then tossed in the hamper to be washed when you're done for that time.

    • @lb9549

By the way my husband didn’t know he was hiding objects from me. It just never occurred to him that at 5’3”, I can’t see the top of the fridge. Anyway, my husband wanted to keep the flyswatter close for when he needed it again. But I had asked him to not put it in the table or counters. He was just doing as I asked! I have this same problem and we are remodeling our kitchen right now... I'm having the cupboard above the fridge made so that it will be as deep as the refrigerator. One side will have vertical dividers so I can store my baking sheets, pizza pans and extra large cutting board. The other side will have a pull-out drawer for pitchers and other awkward vertical items. This way nothing can get piled on top of the fridge, there's no inaccessible cupboard doors over the fridge, and I have a spot for awkward things! I also told this idea to my friend, who is also remodeling her kitchen, so she is doing it as well. You are definitely not alone with this problem!

    I really enjoyed and got a lot out of 'Decluttering At the Speed of Life'. My home isn't terrible but there are definitely problem areas! Your container concept helped me sort through my large kitchen cabinets recently (you know, where all the large things you don't use often but want to keep get shoved until it's a big jumble waiting to avalanche on some unsuspecting fool silly enough to open the door). Sorting through with your tips helped me achieve clean, organized cupboards and I FINALLY got my bulky food dehydrator put away (yes, I use it, so it stays). It's been kicking around wrong place to wrong place for months and now it has a home! I am delighted every time I open those cabinets now.
    I cleaned it only last week, but I bet you I couldn't name half of the things I donated, that's how little they meant to me or were adding to my life. Thanks!

      Jo Ann Evans, what is your method? Long ago I could have said that about my house when I was single (at least the organized part, it was only perfectly clean when the housekeeper came), but I have been with my fiance for over 22 years and our styles don't always meld so my organizational systems which worked for my spaces don't translate easily to our common spaces. I've been wishing for better organization in our household for some time but have not fully gotten there yet. Any tips?

    • @joannevans4169
      @joannevans4169 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@andreamiller6200 I guess the best way to describe my way is to say I’m constantly tidying in small ways. As soon as I’m done with something, I put it away. Dishes are dealt with right after each meal;; I put away cosmetics and hair tools as soon as I finish with them and then give the sink & counter a quick wipe; I make my bed as soon as we get up; before we go to bed I do a quick pick up in the family room; and clothes are folded or hung as soon as they come out of the dryer. I don’t always feel like doing jobs promptly but as soon as I make myself do them I feel good. That internal reward is worth it. As far as organization goes, I put things where they’re supposed to go, so they stay organized for the most part. Once a year or so I go through drawers and closets to purge. I’m 68 and as I get older it’s easier to keep fewer and fewer things. I don’t want my three adult children to face getting rid of mountains of things when I die!

    I’m wondering in de-cluttering videos, when folks say trash, does that mean recycling for the paper, glass and plastics? I thought I would finally ask someone. I hear and see trash, a lot, but I wonder if it’s just easier for filming but is other sorted?
    It slows me down myself because I know that just because it’s out of my home, doesn’t mean it’s dealt with. So much easier to send it to the landfill. So we are trying to learn ways to monitor the belongings before they come in. It’s so hard.
    Thanks for sharing this. I’ve not seen your other videos yet, but look forward to it.

      Dana addresses this in more recent videos. She usually says trash because not everyone has recycling pickup or even centers. For all intents and purposes, trash and recycling are the same thing during this step - they obviously being in trash/recycling, but just never made it to the bin.

    yes!!!! Thank you for talking about allergies (and wearing masks to clean/declutter/tidy!!) if we keep putting off cleaning because of allergies, we are just making more excuses to avoid the clutter and it will NEVER get done... and guess what - there will be MORE dust and allergens the next time around! I learned many years ago to plan ahead whenever possible so i remember to take my allergy medication before starting the work, and WEAR A MASK when cleaning (whether we're doing a deep clean with bleach or other chemicals, or if it is dust in the basement, or pollen outside) and it is refreshing to hear someone bring it up.

    I have a drawer in my command center that I use to store papers that come in the house. The top 3rd of the papers is relocate papers (bills to pay, things to file). The next third is catalogues or flyers that I may like to make a purchase from and magazines I may like to read. The bottom third is the phone book and church directory. When the drawer gets full, I resort and file the file items and then toss all the catalogues I didn't come back to, and the magazines that I didn't open.
    Thank you for your great tips.

    Dana, Thank You! I have been a fan of yours for a long time, and have decluttered some. Recently everything clicked in the right way to help me clear over 2,000 items (not including trashed items) from my home since January with the Clutter challenge. My Fantasy self kept getting in the way before, you know, butcher, baker, candle maker, not counting avid reader, crocheter, etc... stopping my progress. Not anymore! That is a big part of the items I have decluttered. Bingeing on your podcasts while I am cleaning has helped me “see the light”. 😂 Thank you for all you do in trying to help us become reformed messies.
