Replacing RV Water Softener Resin Beads. Easy DIY.

- How to replace your RV water softener resin beads.
Resin beads can last anywhere’s from 4 - 7 years, depending upon where you are getting your water, how much water you use & how often you regenerate.
An RV Portable water softener helps control calcium & mineral deposits building up in your RV water system. Having a water softener attached to your RV is a must in my book, if you want to keep your RV healthy & prevent all kinds of plumbing problems through out your RV. We have a 16,000 grain water softener & it usually lasts us about 2-3 months or 1,600 gallons before we have to regenerate/recharge it again. Recharging a water softener is a very easy DIY job but replacing the resin beads takes a few more steps. We have been sharing for a long time now, how important it is for RVer’s to have a water softener. A water softener prevents calcium & mineral deposits building up on your water heater, heating element, ice machine, clothes washer, faucets, plumbing lines & anything else where water travels. Having a water softener can prevent having very costly repairs happening to your RV & help keep your entire RV water systems healthy.

So that was nasty stuff coming out of there! I wouldn’t want my water going through that 😝 And that is the last thing it goes through? You’ll have to explain that to me in person. As you know, I’m not sold on the softeners...we are from Missouri and we like our hard, natural water. Sir Lloyd Benson and I neither one like taking showers in soft water...it feels slimy to us and we don’t feel clean. But loved the video, as usual perfect step by step instructions! Tell Joanie Hi 👋
It's nasty because it's doing it's job. If that softener wasn't there all that "nasty stuff" (minerals) would be going though out the RV. Yes it's the last thing water goes thru.
I've had our water tested and it's purer than what we had at the house. Without a water softener your RV WILL have plumbing problems, valve problems, pump problems, pressure problems and all the other things I've mentioned in other video's. Mineral deposits will build up through out the entire rig overtime. It's not matter of if, it's when these things will happen. As I mentioned last year in one of our previous videos, one of our friends bought a brand new 5ver and in less than 2 years-not having a water softener-cost them over $4K dollars in repairs and equipment replacement. This was totally avoidable. To me, any FTer a water softener is a must. If you're a part timer-and don't use a softener-they better be doing periodical full rig cleaning with white vinegar followed with sanitation. But even doing that is not near as good as having a softener 24/7/365. Joanie says hi back at ya. 💗
Aqua-Hot specifically recommends softened water with their units. The domestic hot water loop is small diameter and very sensitive to mineral build up from hard water.
Mrsha, your water feels slimy because it is TOO soft. Yes, this can and does happen, a home water softener is designed for a specific hardness and will regenerate frequently, perhaps every morning. The slimy feel is common when you pay a softener company such as Culligan or other bringing the softener bottle to your house and replacing it once per month or every two weeks. The water will start out too soft and then, at the end of the cycle, it will be too hard. Then you start all over again. These RV softeners work in the same principal but since water hardness will vary from site to site it would be almost impossible to design a softener that will automatically adjust. I, personally, would opt for the smaller On-the-go softener and regenerate more frequently to try and avoid the "too soft" feel. RV street is right, if you do not soften your RV water your WILL have problems and a very expensive repair job waiting for you later, not IF but WHEN. Good luck.....!
Hi Joanie.
Boy how miss Martin may he rest in peace.🙏🏽
This was the perfect instructional video for me. I just finished going thru this process. Mine were about 4 years old and they were ugly indeed.
Love you guys. Take care Joanie. 🫶🫶
I have to admit that I had to watch the video to clean the water softener even though I videotaped Martin doing it.🤣
Was looking at a used unit today from a fellow RV’er who sold his class A. I wondered how hard it would be to replace the resins. Did a TH-cam video search and of course Martin has a video on how to do it. It brought a smile to my face and the confidence to get one of these units. We all miss you Martin. Your legacy lives on with every person you teach and helped.
24 pounds of beads? We had no idea! Ours are getting rust-colored as well so it might be time to replace them. You guys are awesome!!!
Truly appreciate your thoroughness when covering any RV related subject.
Great job. Tip#1 Add water into the tank after the resin and that will make the resin float a little to make it easier to install the tube and won't pack beads. Tip#2 Resin is calculated and bought in cu/ft not pounds, so if people are shopping and only see cu/ft they don't get confused. 16k grain softener=.0.5cu/ft, 8k=0.25cu/ft and so on.
Very comprehensive DIY Martin, and glad to see you have warmer weather there now! Love the 'dumpster diving' segment!!
Well done video! We're not softener users- mostly because of storage room issues and because we more frequently (not always) set up in areas with soft surface water supply. But this is a great resource for those that do!
Ya we don't have the storage space either. On move day, we just put it on the floor behind the front seat in our toad.
Remember...look both ways before crossing RV Street ! Thanks for the info. Godspeed all ya’ll !
RIP Martin! You’re still helping us .
♥️♥️♥️
I had no idea you had to replace the beads! We have had a standard size for our little Sprinter Class A since 2016. We are half-timers and just do the regeneration with salt. Truth be told, I got a little lax with doing the test strips. Guess we will be getting some beads, too.
So your unit wasn't damaged by the cold weather 👍🏾.That's great 👌🏾
You are so inspiring, every time I watch your video I tell myself yep know I can do that. Thanks you 2 , Thanks for all the hard work that goes into them!!
Thank you Shellie so much. 💗
Really appreciate your detailed step by step directions. Thanks.
Martin & Joan, I am a serious perfectionist and like perfection at the end of the day. I watched part of one of your videos a few months ago (painting the stripes that were crazed) and initially thought the short part I watched was fairly hoaky, so I tuned out, Well, I revisited your channel a week ago and watched the foam gun wash of your RV and it was not until then I realized you really know what the hell you are talking about and are really qhite a proficient instructor. A good analogy is that I never watched Seinfeld and my dad came over and insisted on watching the last episode, so I was forced to watch it andthen I became hooked after getting to know th actors. So long story short, I am now a RV Street dedicated fan. I even returned to watch the re-paint of your decals full video and was impressed! Okat the rig you have is impeccable and I thought I would throw this request at you, as I did not see a video in your selection. I am needing to do a completer engine bay wash and know the obvious things such as place pags over the alternator and other electronics, however not sure of the chemicals to use or if I would do a simple light rinse or a pressure wash (light) after degreasing. This may be a good video for you to shoot. Now if your engine bay is already clean, you may demo on mine :-) Great channel and tutorials!

Well Jack Cassidy.....I'm glad you finally came around 😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝😝
No seriously thank you so much. 💗
BTW...what does P.E. mean?
Soooooo, I do clean my engine bay once a year but I don't clean it with sprays, foams, degreasers for the most part. I pull the dog house off and-by hand-with a wet rag and maybe a little brake cleaner on the rag wipe it all down and use my Viair compressor to blow everything out that I can't reach. Then I condition all my hoses which you've probably already seen in my other videos. I do our tow car the same way. In fact I did it yesterday.
Now since you have a "Very Dirty Cat C-10 385 HP" your method my vary. I would NOT use a pressure washer but carefully use a light degreaser by hand and a screw driver and so forth to get into tight places and get it clean. Probably a 1/2 day job and then keep it up every year.
Chrisfix has a great video on how to detail and engine bay. Now it's not a diesel but I think you'll get a lot of good tips and tricks from this guy. He's young but very good. I use a lot of his tips and tricks.

Thx for the info 👍
Excellent video Martin thank you very much. I’m going to try and use your Amazon store link. My question is about the iron out product where do you put that? Thanks again.
You add it right in the top where you add the salt.

Thanks.
Have this exact system thanks to you. Works like a charm. About ready for my first rejuvenation. Will follow your previous video. One question: when you replace the beads and are not using salt at that time, do you still use Rust Out at this time? Or do you only use when you rejuvenate with the salt? Thanks and safe travels.
Just when you rejuvenate with the salt the first time and then afterwards.
After reading this comment here's a better way to say it:
I add Rust Out when I rejuvenate with the salt.
Thanks for the video very informative. New subscriber looking forward to all your videos we are full-time rving. Also I'm having a hard time finding your Amazon link to buy the resin beads

Is this the same process for using the crystal salt? The guy we got our softener from recoment that crystal salt softner. And our water has been salt ever since I changed it out.
Love the content, Thank you for the knowledge
I'm sad to say that Martin has passed away and I don't have an answer to your question. SORRY
Thanks for a great video again, I have this system also, do you drain it on travel days? I did my first time and not much water came out, I did open the ends only not the top, ha.. Keep having fun and take care.
No I do not drain it on travel days.
Great video, I hooked up my new sofetner and filter assy. the same as yours following your video, I bought the cheap quick disconnect and you were right again-They leaked like a sieve can you send me the link or the brand of the quick disconnect fittings you use. Thanks again for the great show! Hollywood will be calling you soon, I'm sure LOL!

Hello Martin, Got a quick Question: Where do we purchase the replacement resin beads for the same softener you have? Been on the internet but haven't felt secure in what to order. We sold our house and are about to go full-time, (scary-ish) so we're watching all of your videos that we can. We truly appreciate all the work and info that goes into your and Joenie's segments. You're a machine! lol. Timesaving and Lifesaving stuff.
Thank you so much. 🔧 👍
My supplier is currently working on new sources for their beads. In the meantime you can get your resin bead kit here: www.portablewatersoftener.com/shop/Refill-Kits/portable-double-standard-water-softener-refill-kit?SKU=OTG2-DBLSOF-REF1
Starting to full time can be a little "scary-ish" and certainly different than what you've been used to. But you'll be fine. EVERYTHING now becomes an adventure. Even going to and finding a grocery store in areas you've never been before. It'll be fun.
I don't have space for one if these in my travel trailer storage. I have been considering a two stage filter instead. I wonder if that will keep some of the hard water out.
Filters will not remove hardness. We don't have the room to store it our rig either. We carry it in our toad, then set it up right outside the wet bay when we land.
Thank you for telling me. You just saved me a bunch of money.
@@chrisistocool1 Just to be clear. in case I misunderstood you. You should have at least a two stage water filtering system (we have 3 filters) but they won't remove hardness. Only a water softener will do that.
Thank you for all the info you have for RV’s. You have been VERY helpful.
Just ordered and already received Double On The Go water softener. This thing is huge and heavy. I am thinking of exchanging this double unit to a standard one. We are not a full time by any means. Camping 3-4 times a year at a week at the most and planning annual trips for a month or two. Will standard unit be sufficient to our needs? We are new to water softener and appreciate your suggestion,. By the way. I will try to install softener in water bay. Thank you ! Great video as always.
Oh, C'ome on, it's not that that big....😜😜😜😜😜😜
If you're going to be camping for a month or two the standard will not be sufficient IMO. I mean MAYBE....but...You're constantly going to be regenerating it. When it's just a week then yes. If you can spare the room and weight, then yes, installing it in the wet bay would be better. We didn't have that luxury. But I am glad you're taking your water situation seriously. You'll be glad you did over time.
I live up here in the GWN ( Great White North , AKA Canada ), and we have to winterize and de-winterize our motorhomes. I could not find anything in your channel on this?
That's because we never winterize. We're FTers.
Why did the chicken ( chicken to do RV repairs ) cross the Street ?.......................Because RVSTREET gave him the confidence to do a lot of these RV repairs, tips, and tricks . Thank You from Fred and Wendy
Ok that's good right there I don't care who you are. Thx you two. 💗 💕
What should you hook up first. The water softener or the filters. Thanks
The softener should always be last in line.
my little in and outlet stickers fell off. is the outlet connection connected to the long tube in the middle of the softner? seems like if would be otherwise it would push resin into water lines if connected backwards. thanks for the video
I believe your correct. I'd have to pull mine apart to be 100% Mark in & out again on the outside with a marker.
I have a solar Question, I have a Renogen 400 Watt Solar kit. I bought through Amazon. Where in the hooking it up should I install some inline fuses and a shut off switch to the solar Set Up. Please. Thanking you in advance for the help.. Annie
I believe you have the Adventurer Controller with this kit and if I'm not mistaken, it's already equipped with multiple electronic protections ie: reverse current, overcharging, short-circuit and reversed polarity. It may already have an additional fuse that you can change out too. Not sure about that. You'll have to look at the unit and see if it does. But an inline fuse should hook up before the batteries. Switch is the same way. You only need one fuse, just make sure that fuse and wiring is properly rated. Your solar manual will tell you what that fuse should be rated for if it doesn't already have one. But like I said, the controller already has many protections built in. If your manual is insufficient and doesn't include wiring diagrams or other information you need, I think you can find what you need below.
Hope this helps.
thx for watching Annie

I'm sorry to keep bothering you but I watch your videos and love them and have a lot of respect for your knowledge. With that said I hope you can answer one more question. I bought a new CLEARSOURCE ULTRA with the water softener and followed the instructions. Right now I have it setup for drinking water and coffee making at the house. But every time I turn it on I get some tan colored water and a funny taste. If I run it for awhile it clears up. But I don't want this tan water going into the RV. Do you have this issue, and if so what do you do about it? Thanks so much.
No problem, I like helping with questions if I can:
You should NOT have any of this. You should have clear, safe, great tasting water thru out the RV, if everything is setup and working correctly.
With my system-which is not a CLEARSOURCE ULTRA system-I do not have any issues. Without knowing how often you use your system, how you've been maintaining it, your water source and how you've set up your system, it would hard for me to know the cause. You need to isolate what's causing the problem to determine whether it's the filters, the softener, your water source or perhaps the water hose. I'm just guessing here, but it sounds like you have some sediment somewhere in the system and that's why it takes time for it to clear out. You should not have any sediment. Things to check and to think about would be:
1) Make sure the softener is the last item in your water system before water enters into the RV
2) Change out your filters and canisters about every quarter and this includes the blue Camco inline water filter. When you replace the Camco inline filter make sure you turn on the city water-without the hose hooked up-and flush that filter first for about 5 minutes before hooking up to the hose. It has fresh carbon in there that needs to be flushed out
3) *Back flush* AND recharge your softener
4) After back flushing and recharging, do a hardness test on your water right from the streaming water coming out of the softener. If that's ok, hook up the hose and then test water again from inside the RV from any faucet after you've run out all the old water in the system from your faucets
5) Sanitize your water hose
6) Your beads in the softener may be fowl and need to be replaced. Or perhaps the screen on the bottom of the fill tube inside has broke or been compromised and beads are actually getting into the fill tube. Unlikely but it is possible
7) If you have stored your water softener for any length of time this could be causing the brown water. Follow procedure for post storage
8) Make sure your water softener is ALWAYS in the normal upright position. Even while traveling and not being used
9) This brown water...is it coming out of the hot side of any faucet inside the RV? If so your water heater needs a full cleaning & servicing. th-cam.com/video/0m4m1CYiUYc/w-d-xo.html
I'd start with these things. 👍
Few things you forgot, chlorine destroys the beads over time, as for the iron there is a product called iron out, when you add salt you add a tablespoon with it, my resin came with a nice blue funnel to load them but thanks for showing it
He filters the chlorine out with his system first. And yes he said he uses Iron Out when he does the regeneration.
I just purchased the dual bed standard deionizer and would you know how to regenerate that system?
No sorry I don't.
I love your stuff .....I am new at the rv world...this is an aside to the water subject....I ck ed all your video for back up camera ie your opinion ....any news to which one you use thank you
Hey Wayne,
Well, the back up camera we use came from factory with the coach so I really don't know what camers it is other than it works good. Sorry. 😜
What beads did you purchase? Is it bags? How many and from where?
I am sad to say that Martin has passed away and I don't have the answer to your question. Sorry
My softener recently ran out of salt. Ever since it ran out there has been iron in the water that I can't remove. There was a solid mass of hard salt at the bottom of my brine tank but I removed that days ago and regenerated my unit at least three times and the iron is still in the water. I used a product called rust out, but I used it before I knew about and removed the salt mass. I am getting another type of cleaner call res clean. If I use it and it doesn't work then I guess I will have to replace the beads. I haven't been so frustrated in many years.
Here's my advice. Maybe you're doing this way....maybe not. Regenerate often. It will make your resin beads last longer and keep your salt levels up. But if you use a lot of water-for example if you have a washing machine etc-you'll have to regenerate more often or your beads will wear out faster from the lack of salt. You cannot-over regenerate your water softener. Don't let your softener run out of salt. We regenerate about every 3 months or so and we don't have a washing machine. But in any case, resin beads will wear out over time but a lot faster if you are not properly regenerating often or you let your salt run out. Are you back flushing every time you regenerate? Here's a video that I did about regeneration. Also be sure to watch to the end where I cover what I use to control iron after regeneration. www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet?listId=3Q0KMKYCTJVT
www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet?listId=3Q0KMKYCTJVT
It sounds to me at this point if your beads are fairly old or just worn out, you probably should just replace the beads and start fresh with new beads like I did, regenerate often and use the product I do to control iron every time I regenerate.
JIC...Here's one of my PLAYLISTS that may be of interest to you too.

Hope this helps Bob 👍
I have this water softener and while draining the water in preparation of regenerating it for the first time, I mistakenly took the cap off and I poured out about a cup of beads before I realized what I had done. Is losing that amount of beads going to be an issue? Should I replace all of the beads and put in the correct amount or will everything still work the same and I shouldn't worry about it?
A cup full will not make any difference at all.
Thank you!
👍👍👍
👍
do u ever use rustout?
I use Iron Out every time I regenerate, which is about every 3 months.
I didn’t see in the description where to get the new resin.
It's in there. Go about half way down in the description. I give you a link to my water store where they are. Then just under that link I list the part number to type in and order. 🇺🇸 👍
thx James
I scanned through the comments dud see ut, we are a low sodium diet. With that said dies the salt transfer into the water? If so how can we remove it?
No it doesn't transfer to the water. The salt in the water softener just causes a chemical reaction with the resin beads to remove all the calcium, minerals and hardness from the water, thereby softening it. Having a softener in an RV-to me-is a must. It will protect everything concerning water in the RV. Without one, overtime, it will begin to wreak havoc on everything that uses water, including all your water lines and valves. Even with a water water softener it doesn't remove ALL the deposits, but most. That's why you still have to do maintenance on things like the water heater, fresh water tank etc. Just not near as often.
Here's some more videos on this subject if you're interested:

You can use potassium chloride salt instead of Sodium chloride (common table salt) it costs a little more and is not as commonly stocked. I get mine in 40 lbs bags for my home softener at Menards. Potassium is a bit more heart healthy.
Hey sarge. You know I appreciate it but I am a Veteran so none of that sisy Soft water for me.
Your quick disconnects are, and have been, unavailable in your store. Just FYI.
Thanks Mike.
Ya I know. They go quick. They were available this morning because I checked. It's a very hot item.
But I'd like to ask you please, to check about once a week using our Amazon Store link. That would be awesome. 👍
Hey Mike,
I thought I'd let you know, I just checked on the brass quick disconnects this morning. They'll be in on April 2nd but you can order them now. www.amazon.com/shop/rvstreet
Hey Martin, my wife follows a TH-camr, Minimal Mom.
In her latest video titled “Surprise Social Worker Visit” she wants to paint her camper and she’s been watching you for tips. She even posted a link to your How To video. Check it out.
Thank you so much that. That's very cool. 😝
No offense but would you have your good looking wife step in front of the camera once in a while. You are like me the better half looks better. Love you guys take care as always enjoy your videos.
I'll discuss that with her. 👍
So, what did Joanie say lol
Dude I tried to watch your video, as I need to change out my beeds, but OMG, you turned a 2 minute video into 20 minutes of Bla bla bla, it's like you are talking to a bunch of 4 year Olds.
That said, ok finally, 24 lbs of beeds.
I know but you have to understand, 78% of my audience is >65yrs old and they like being shown things step-by-step
What is the reading of the water without the softener?
I'm sad to say that Martin has passed away and I don't have the answer to your question. Sorry
