    I love how this turned out, how you guys respected his privacy and convinced him to stay to give us wisdom and knowledge from such a great mind :') It made us understand where he came from (about being protective of your sketchbook) and his principles. Also in the beginning, when he talked about using sketchbook for practice and for play, it may come across as a no-brainer thing but we really needed that reminder, being surrounded by almost picture-perfect-on-every-page sketchbooks. Thank you for this!

    "They don't have to be great drawings.. My brain captured on paper", That's exactly it, I remember when I first started using sketchbooks I just wanted all the pieces to look perfect. Instead of just trying to get the ideas out of my head and into paper, Really loved this video. Motivated me to draw a lot more. Thank you .

      Are you under 30 years old by any chance? It's wild how younger generations are just expected to lay their lives bare on the internet. You never ever have to be like that. Especially with drawing! I have boxes and boxes and stacks of art and doodles no one will ever see. Its only purpose is my development.

    Truly the sketchbook is a kind of diary, but an emotional diary where you revisit the things that you created in the past. For me is personal but i always like to show them, probably because i am kind of proud to be at just of my level as self-taught.
    I try to be inspiring to other people showing my works because if i made it having that passion, so everyone can. Unfortunately most of the people who have a hidden passion for drawing don`t actually make it, because of wrong mindset and pessimism... i feel lucky bit also obligated to make the other people see that they can do it even by themselves...

    Jeez. You guys never been to a pool, wanting to jump from a high up springboard and then climbed back down because it was too high for you? Basically the same thing. He wanted to share his sketchbooks and did in the beginning, but then he felt, that he was just too uncomfortable with it, since it was just too personal to him. Didn't you listen when he said, that it's just like his diary and you don't usually share your diary with strangers? I completely understand why he stopped.

    I think it's important to note that, it's his work and it's his choice to show it or not AND that his advice comes from a place of trying to preserve a space for people who might otherwise be too anxious to draw at all. I will say that I think it's also valuable for aspiring artists to see that even the people you idolize make mistakes as well.

    It is so nice and refreshing to hear an artist talk about sketchbooks being private drawing spaces to develop our skills and note down ideas. I always thought this way about mine, but in recent years I have seen so many tidy and polished sketchbooks... I would look at mine with its scribbles and rubbish in them and it would make me stop drawing in my books and put them away.
    I also think school, college and university didn't help because they made us complete 'sketchbooks' for projects, but they weren't really sketchbooks - they were project books to get marked to a criteria. Totally not what a sketchbook should be in my opinion, but years of that ingrained the idea into my brain of it being something final and viewable to others for criticism, etc.

      Disagree. He had some good points for sure but I got the feeling like it was an excuse - like he was hiding behind the "wisdom" to justify not sharing his work. He may come off as a "nice" guy but nice guy doesn't necessarily translate to "good" man.

    Scott's frustration with time ( 9:40 ) really hits home with me. I'm approaching retirement and have finally shifted my priorities from work and responsibilities to art and creativity. I spent a lifetime yearning to release the pent-up artsy-fartsy part of my brain that I stuffed back in my early 20's. To hear an artist vocalize that same frustration, from within that creative world I thought I had forsaken, gives a little credence. Perhaps I didn't miss that much. I recall how annoyed I was after I designed a few houses and had to cater to someone else's image and desires. I found it stifling. I can't imagine having to be creative on a daily or weekly basis or under time and budget constraints... yuck. Personally, I discovered a new way to dabble in art. Construction, spouse, children and grandchildren. I have spent the last 35+ years teaching my wife, children and grandchildren about the wonders of art. How it can help in most every profession that they might partake, and give them a sense of self, purpose and escape... I used to fret about the lost years of art... the images and distractions that claw at my brain wanting an outlet... But now my efforts have paid off with my eight grandkids and their pursuits, and my wife now dabbles in painting that she never would have before. And me, I build things for us that are pleasant to look at and functional at the same time. Most will never see it, but that's ok. It makes us feel good on a daily basis... and that's enough.

    Awesome video! Thank you for creating and sharing. This is easily an artist's lecture that would've cost money outside of TH-cam. So again, I sincerely thank you.
    This is the most relatable sketchbook interview that I've watched. I have to agree that a sketchbook is a personal/safe place where you can be & do whatever. Too often I see students reference social media accounts of artists that assemble "piece-books." I also have to respect the fact that some artists have decades under their belt of forging fluency with their visual vocabulary and quite often that artist could throw something onto the paper/surface and it will look polished BUT its still them thinking visually.
    Now I need more Scott Eaton interviews. Lol!

    For a while even though I knew a sketchbook is a place to be free and experiment and do whatever you want, the pages are usually blank because I always end up treating it like every drawing a make in here should be at the perfect standard but watching this now...I felt a huge burden just got lifted of my shoulder. I'm going to start treating me sketchbooks like what they are, a sketchbook.

  • @theartyone
    @theartyone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Haha! What a Diva. Sure there's some things you don't want to show but it's always good to share sketchbooks to help generate new ideas with new people. Ideas you started but never did anything with.

    • @retardno002
      @retardno002 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The idea he shared is that your sketchbook is yours, it's not supposed to look good. And if you read the comments, that helped a lot of people. I'm sure most of his stuff looks awesome but the principle stands. To some, that was the new idea that you regret he didn't share.

    • @theartyone
      @theartyone 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@retardno002 He was a diva because at the start he decides he can't show his sketchbooks and walks off. If he wasn't comfortable then why agree to do the video?
      Of course sketchbooks are not meant to be perfect... no-one said they were. I agree with him that buying a fancy sketchbook does put you off using it (I have a few of those) but to just walk off at the start because he feels his drawings are too private? That's just silly behaviour. It's fine if people feel that way, it's their sketchbook to do with what they please, but if he wasn't happy about it then why agree to show it?

    • @fluxmind
      @fluxmind 17 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Indeed it wasn’t the point. He was cognizant of the fact that he was on a show where he was showing his sketchbook. He took his own principals to heart. He wanted to show that you can set boundaries. It was one of the better videos on the channel. Showing sketches if they involve work or projects is fine. But you have to be able to keep what yours close to you. Like he said it’s a diary of sorts.

  • @TheJohn0363
    @TheJohn0363 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Shane he wouldn't show, BUT also I really respect his blunt point and his point of view. Its true, a sketch book is for ideas, a lot of people naturally judge very critically even what is sometimes not even a drawing, more just lines to describe action or an idea.. its protection for himself and I respect that. I respect him coming on here and standing by his views, amen. Expression is the greatest form of art, and sometimes that is only for the one person.

    This may be my favourite episode so far, in this series. Drawing has been turned into a performance art, thanks to the insta-idiocy that has infected the entire population. Sketchbooks have become a mere click-bait term for quick consumption, low return 'content'.

We shouldn't be entitled to his sketchbooks, even if other artists welcome people to see their work, you have to bite your tongue and empathize with Eaton here. Just because one person is comfortable with something doesn't mean everyone else is, this works both ways.

    Whatta jerk...so no sketchbook shown?! Should i say where do you put your sketchbooks into?

  • @kevincooper5656

    I understand his
    reasoning and agree with the idea that sketchbooks should be used to
    brainstorm, work on things you have trouble with/experiment, etc., I just
    don't agree with the idea of "keeping" it to yourself. I can't tell you
    how many times I've heard from art teachers and great artists in
    general, how the artist should "study" other artists' works. How we
    ought to do "master" studies and go about dissecting the artist's
    process. Do you know how much more easy it would be to do that if we
    had, say, John Singer Sargent's sketch books to mull over?? What the
    hell did this guy come on here for if NOT to show his sketches so that
    we could catch a glimpse into his process and to - (wait for it) LEARN
    something that we might be having trouble with ourselves?? To his credit at least he drew something for us to see an "aspect" of his process but "how" did he arrive to it? What did he do in his sketchbook(s) that inspired what he's now showing? I'm turned off by this guy - he may be an exceptional artist but seems like an "ungenerous" human being.

    Respect for him not showing his sketches, that is up to him to show. but I disagree, I think an artist should show their work regardless of good or bad it is because it inspired another artist. And it defeats the purpose of art, to be appreciated. But that's my opinion just as he has his.

    This guy is honestly full of himself. I get what he’s saying but people are honestly watching these more for their thought process and their thoughts when it comes to art, we already can barely see the drawings in the first place from the random camera angles. It’s not like he’s a Picasso who’s drawings are sacred lol chill out

      Because he had advice to give, and the fact of him not showing his sketchbooks was good advice for some people. Some people feel obligated to share their work and he wanted to let people know they should feel comfortable doing what they want

      @@inkscratch that 'advice' even a toddler could give, here's one advice, don't agree to appear on interviews specifically about sketchbooks if you don't want to show yours. I can accept if he's afraid of showing some loli porn or something like that and forgot about it.

    He looks scared about being judged. He came off as a very insecure individual. Like if he was scared he would be made fun of or get criticism that he couldn’t take. It’s ok. But I think he needs to be a bit more confident.
