As a guest of US Civil rights Organizer , Charles Cobb Jr. Kenya's Independence VP Oginga Odinga was once arrested in Atlanta while in Atlanta protesting against Black discrimination together with 17 other SNCC students . This was an embarrassment for the relations between US and Kenya after the state realized that they had locked up Kenya VP . He refused to leave jail until all the black students were released . His wishes were granted .
In 1963, US first Black Chief Justice, Thurgood Marshall, who was friends with Kenya Nationalists Tom Mboya,Oginga Odinga and Jomo Kenyatta, was responsible for writing part of Kenya's Independence constitution particularly the part on rights of racial minorities including white, Asian/Indian,Arabs etc .

VP Oginga Odinga of Kenya and President Milton Obote(Luo-Langi) of Uganda started efforts to unite the Luo of East ,Central, North/North East Africa . The first headquarters of Luo Union was in Kisumu at the OFAFA MEMORIAL HALL . Ambrose Ofafa was the first treasurer of Luo Union and was killed during the British Colonial state of emergency under dubious circumstances . The funeral was conducted in Alego Kargada in Nyanza Kenya .
VP Oginga Odinga started a unity tour and funds drive tour of East,Central and NorthEast Africa to support Luo Union . He would later resign as Luo Ker after he became Kenya VP relinquishing the post to Joel Omer . Other notable Luo Ker included Paul Mboya from South Nyanza Karachuonyo whose son together with Argwings Kodhek, first MP Gem Nyanza, were both the first black lawyers in pre-independence Kenya .
VP Oginga Odinga together with some of his children travelled extensively across East and Central Africa collecting funds to build Ofafa memorial hall in 1955 . Ofafa memorial was about 300 meters on the right side of Kaloleni estate Kisumu and behind the house of Oginga Odinga .
