My Thoughts On Talking Sopranos...

  • Sponsor: Recently the Matrix 4 just triggered nostalgia. I watched its trilogy again, and found an interesting giveaway about this movie:bit.ly/3qorTUM. Go play the Matrix mission code game and win the trilogy DVD collection and other prizes.
    So recently the podcast Talking Sopranos ended, and I just wanted to make a quick video giving some brief thoughts on it. I was supposed to release a video the day it ended or the day after, but I fell ill. It’s been a little while now since it ended, but it’s crazy to think that the podcast ran for over a year. Our sense of time really seems to have been affected with this whole COVID and lockdown business.
    Anyway, as I’m sure you know if you’ve clicked on this video, Talking Sopranos is a podcast hosted by Sopranos actors Michael Imperioli and Steve Schirripa, who played Christopher Moltisanti and Bobby Bacala respectively. The idea behind Talking Sopranos was incredible. The Sopranos has a huge following, it’s popularity has surged since the pandemic and it’s getting new followers all the time. It’s a timeless series, one of the best ever made, and it’s not going to go away.

      I liked it but it was a lot more like watching an episode of inside the actors studio than it was talking about the content of the show. I'm sure it this appeals to a lot of people, but I would have preferred more commentary on the themes and the plot. I loved it. Michael is super interesting and extremely educated on the history of the New York underground scene and movies. I have lived in NYC for over a decade and am obsessed with previous generations of New York so perhaps this resonated with me more than others. I can also imagine if you are listening to Steve and Michael talk about all the amazing Italian food you can get here but you live somewhere where all you have is Dominos pizza nearby...well that would probably be no fun either. I agree that sometimes they skimmed over important details in the show and but I think this was always a pretty light-hearted podcast where a lot of the focus was just talking shit about what ever was on their mind. I loved having it on in the background and hearing Steve rant about DeNiro. I mean that level of begrudgery was pretty hilarious. Certainly an odd couple but it worked for me, will miss the podcast!

    They specifically said the reason they did the podcast: because other random ppl were starting podcasts about The Sopranos who WEREN'T even on the show. • @michaelcorcoran8768
      @michaelcorcoran8768 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      They still could have produced and hosted the show but maybe had a comedian or a talk show host involved so it wasn't so much inside baseball about production and personal anecdotes and relationships. I mean a lot of people might want that, but personally I would prefer more analysis of the plot and themes. Or at least a healthier mix. It seemed too much of the content. Was everybody talking about how great everybody else is. And it's true they were all great but that's pretty much a given at this point.

  • @SopranoTheories
    @SopranoTheories 2 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    I disagree. Talking Sopranos is an amazing podcast! It provided so many untold stories that us fans would never have heard in the first place. Steve and Michael were the perfect fits for the podcast, who else would have replaced them that were also an integral part of the show? Maybe Robert Iler and Jamie Lynn? But they already have their own podcast that has a certain style and asking them to do two podcast recordings in one week could have resulted in them getting burnt out. If you are a Sopranos fan I don't see how you cannot LOVE Talking Sopranos. Michael provided some insight towards each episode, almost acting as a film professor in a way, whereas Steve would be more of the casual fan of the episode and follow along for the ride. The show was on the air twenty years ago, most of the actors are aging and some unfortunately have left us as we all know like James. I suggest listening to the full set of episodes along with re-watching the series. You'll understand everything more and view it in a clearer way, well at least I felt that. Some of my favourite guest were Matthew Price, Terry Winter, David Chase, Dominic Chianese and the HILARIOUS Frank Renzulli.
    Sorry to disagree with your comments! And this is by no means a beef or anything like that what so ever! Just found your comments to be surprising knowing your a Sopranos fan too. I apologize if I have offended you, cheers!

    Steve was “breaking balls” with Michael. That was how they injected humor into their podcast. They’d go into character & complain & make digs at each other. Not sure how you didn’t catch on to that. It’s called acting & it’s what entertainers do. I guess that you took it so literal is a testament to how natural & convincing they act. They do it on their live tour shows as well.

    You wanna know what my biggest gripes were about that podcast? Let me tell you one of threes things:
    One: The episodes were highly mis-marketed. Why would you have an actor, producer, writer, or any guest for that matter headline the title of each episode, but then give them like 30 minutes of airtime? Worse, you don’t even get the guests insight into the episode, you just go off of this formulaic checklist on how said guest got their start on Hollywood and leading up to the sopranos, what drew them to acting, and what it was like back then being recognized at parties and events for being on a hit tv show. Oh, and how they felt about Jim? They barely make an attempt to talk about the episode, glossing over important plot points and events. If Michael, or the guest would somehow manage to find a way to stay on topic, and open up deeply about a subject, or theory, then you’d have Steve “shit for brains” Schripa interrupt and go on a tangent with his surface level thinking and say “oh that’s not important.” Or “I think you’re looking at it too deep.” Very little substance, or anything of significant value was actually discussed in the timeframe that was given to guests.
    Two: Steve Schirpa and Michael Imperioli’s chemistry heavily deteriorated overtime and became so off, that it almost felt antagonistic as the show was coming to its end. It was evident that Michael had enough of Steven’s abrasive attitude, wild outbursts and child-like shenanigans. You could even at times see Michael visibly cringe, and shake off some of the awkward and horrible shit that Steve would say as a poor attempt at humor.
    Three: The whole show was poorly produced from the jump. The producers didn’t really know what they wanted to do with this podcast series, but due to the pandemic and recent renewed interest in the sopranos series by a younger audience, they saw the potential to make money. The execution was off. Schirpa was poorly cast as a co-host, the podcast was awkwardly organized, and devolved into a ad-running machine. It had its moments, but it was a pretty big let down and far from the quality we’re used to getting from the sopranos.
    Now go home and get your fucking shine box! 👋

They both said on several occasions that until the podcast, neither of them ever sat down and actually watched The Sopranos, and there were plot points that they had totally forgotten about (Chase HIMSELF couldn't even remember certain details). Steve not knowing that Richie and Jackie were brothers makes more sense when you realize that he hadn't even thought about the damn Sopranos at all in about 20 years. That was a job he did 20 years ago. To him, that's ALL it was. How much shit would YOU remember from a job you had 20 years ago? I think two boomers without podcasting experience were limited by the remote nature that podcast took and is a shame they never went with onsite episodes as I think they would have benefited. Michael is the artiste and Steve is the crass every guy and I think the pairing was perfect to capture sorta the two sides of the Sopranos' audience. That being said, the audience who would follow a 100 something podcast about a 20 year old show is not the same audience who would like Steve's caveman approach. Ultimately, I think if the podcast had been in person and maybe a third host who can balance them a bit and was just a fan of the show would have greatly benefited the discussions and the structure of it. Podabing is still a great podcast that managed to accomplish its goal of being entertaining and informative.

    I really enjoy the podcast. Until TS I didn’t realize exactly how difficult acting is or how much work it takes to make a tv show and I really appreciate the insight that both of the hosts and their guests bring to the show. I think the podcast does a decent enough job of being a companion show to the Sopranos but could have benefited from modeling itself from more polished companion shows like Talking Dead.
    Which gets right to my main issue with the podcast; they don’t actually review the episode with the guest they have on. Which is a really weird move to me. I would have loved to hear Eddie’s insight on “Whitecaps” or get Aida Turtorro’s reaction to rewatching “Knight In White Satin Armor”.
    I wish they had been a little more respectful of spoilers. The show is 20 years old there’s no need to pretend that no one’s watched it. But blowing major plot lines and outcomes in the first 5 episodes was unnecessary and could be a huge let down for a newer Sopranos fan that is trying to use this like a companion show.
    My advice, keep a open mind, don’t take the bits seriously, and don’t listen to this podcast if you haven’t watched the show all the way through and don’t want to have plot points and character deaths ruined for you. It’s a good podcast that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

    its strange it seems like we watched two different podcasts, and it seems like most people don't understand, that Steve and Michael didn't just one day say oh we should do a podcast for the fans to make them happy, they were hired to do the podcast, and were paid to do a job, it was a job to them, just like the show the sopranos was just a job for them, they aren't going to go crazy and fan boy out on people that they worked with, or ask fanboy questions, just because a lot of new people are watching it now, it has been 20 years or so for them, they have moved on and this was just a fun job for them, but still a job, and yes, it could have been better and should have been, but in the end we got exactly what they were selling, a podcast with Steve and Michael, and people are mad/upset we didn't get Bobby and Chris talking about the sopranos, Ive been watching the sopranos since the first season was still airing, and im very glad/happy that we got this podcast and got to see Steve and Michael joke and mess around and angry and what not, it was good, not great, but I'm glad we have it to rewatch or to take clips from, good points were made in the video though, you just have to take the fan glasses off for a second and realize, this was just another paying job for them

    I agree with all that was said. It got to the point towards the last half of the podcast that Michael kept repeating "I don't remember "..like he just didn't care anymore. Imo.

    This show is called "Talking Sopranos", but more than half of a video's length is them talking not about the Sopranos or Sopranos related stuff, but completely random shit, like about Imperioli being buddhist. Who the fuck cares. When I see "Talking Sopranos" I would assume that would be about the show, not about some actor's world views.

    I agree. Schirripa killed the podcast for me, the one thing I didn’t like about him was when he would talk about something stupid then go into his past life growing up as if he was with the baddest of the bad and that he grew up with the mob/mob-esque life (maybe he really did or didn’t idk) but for me whenever he brings that up it felt like he was trying to say, “oh I was the real gangster of the cast… I rubbed shoulders with the real people… I know more than you” blah blah blah. In other words I feel like he was trying to say, “I should have been Tony or a bigger part in the show” without really saying. As if he was dropping hints and waiting for someone else to say it.

    It's not farfetched that Ajs girlfriend could have been a spy . It makes sense in the end and when Carmella makes the statement " That makes me nervous" or something like that seeing her with AJ at their house while in hiding. She also did turn her head when she heard Tony and Carmella making dinner plans. It's all in the shot . These things are hidden in plain sight.

    • @galesito1733
      @galesito1733 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The whole "AJ's girlfriend is a spy" theory makes no sense. If The Sopranos were in hiding at the time then it would make a little sense but they weren't. When she hears them making dinner plans she's in their house, a hitman could have simply waited outside their house and followed Tony to wherever he was going. The gang war was supposed to have ended so they weren't hiding any more and the location of their house wasn't a secret to anyone so Rhiannon (AJ's girlfriend) wasn't needed to explain how they knew where Tony was going. The hitman wasn't waiting there, he came in after Tony which probably means that he simply followed him.

      The problem with theories like this is that we're all making assumptions. It wouldn't be too hard to just follow Tony to the restaurant. Why would they need a location? They didn't need a spy to find Bobby. And really at the end of the day, what's the difference? If they decided to kill Tony, it's done. They would find a way. If it weren't that night, it would be another night.

    I thought it was great. The Sopranos had a lot of eccentric, very human characters in it, beautifully portrayed. The podcast was very similar. These were from the actual people who were on the show - what more could you ask for?

    I have to say I respectfully disagree, I was hesitant to check it out because of your review but I'm glad I did because I've really been enjoying it. I think there's a pretty good balance between Steve and Michael. Michael is definitely the deeper thinker of the two but I still find things Steve says interesting & funny. I also just really enjoy the camaraderie between them and learning more about what went on behind the scenes. Anyway just my 2 cents, nothing against your opinion, but that's mine 🤷‍♀️

    Exactly! Finally someone says it. I was going to start a podcast to review each "TS." The weakest link was indeed Schirripa, who clearly had never watched the show until the money grab of this podcast was offered to him. I never cared about his time in Las Vegas, I started to not care what kind of food they liked. ( After every cuisine discussion they both said "but it has to be made right." All FOOD has to be made right. ) The interviews seemed to cut off in the middle, the guests were often surprised.
    Chubs had to ask each guest "So did Tony die?" We have been through that over & over. And what was with The Webby? Was that them taking the piss? Was it a joke? It was made by Hollywood to prime us for "TMSOFN" & what a letdown that was.
    I worked as a walk-on extra with Steve on "To Kill the Irishman" here in Detroit. I played a Hells Angel circa '64 ( you can see me in the thumbnail for the fight scene here on YT. ) He was very nice to me, grabbing me by the jacket & pointing a prop saw-off shotgun in my face, which should have brought us into the scene. That was a generous move by a well-known actor to a beginner. So he must ne a nice fella. He just is not the best noodle in the spaghetti & meatballs.
    Michael was SO bored by the end. You could tell he barely wanted to be there. The questions about when the actors started, what school they went to, first project, etc. showed that they did very little preparation. I stopped before the last couple episode, after spending a year with these people. Oh did y'all know Steve is in network TV's "Blue Blood?" He only mentioned it every episode.

    Michael and Dan Grimaldi would've been perfect for the intellectual discussion, being that Dan is a professor. Michael and Jonny V would've been perfect for the laughs. I briefly warmed up to Steve when he lashed out against other celebrities, because its rare you see someone who doesn't care about burning bridges. Then it got repetitive and he just got mean spirited, mocking Michael's Buddhist faith and getting more loud and obnoxious. I used to like to watch the podcast with family, then it got awkward with Steve dragging out the produce on the BlueChew ads and making other annoying sexual innuendo. And it also got old with Steve's constant self deprecating humor about being fat. I can't really remember anything that Steve offered of value.

    I'm still going to go back and listen to the David chase episode again. . I probably listened to about a good 10-20episodes and I see where you come from and I could tell the co hosts would get a little annoyed with each other at times.
    I think imperioli and Drea de Matteo (Adriana) would of had better chemistry. I personally would of done like a multi host panel with rotating guests and hosts. I would of liked to have seen David chase, Lorraine bracco and Edie Falco on more as roatatiing co hosts. I think that would of made a a huge impact on tone and pace.

      Lorraine Bracco was drunk.
      Replacing Schirripa with Drea de Mateo would have been incredible, she has her own Sopranos podcast so this could have been a thing, plus she and Imperioli had great chemistry on screen. Schirripa and Imperioli didn't so it was a stupid idea to pair the two together. Plus Schirripa is clinically stupid.

Worst criticism from is they always seemed so unprepared. It was as if they didn’t think about what they were going to say or discuss during the podcast which is why some are so long. A huge disappointment indeed.

    Sometimes I feel like show podcasts just feel like actors who had little involvement in the writing and directing of the show they were in just feels like they were trying to profit off of work that wasn’t even theirs (like any Office podcast). But, with shows like the IASIP podcast, the crew-members who host the podcast seem totally justified in making it, since they were actually the creators and writers of the show. This show feels pretty justified, since Michael Imperioli was a big writer and creative influence on The Sopranos, as well as being an actor on it.

    I really enjoyed the entire series. I agree with some of your points about sound and quality of broadcast. I loved their relationship and felt that as actors they did well to eventually become decent hosts. Remember when they started this we were in the midst of a global pandemic and I think they did a good job. So what if they were out to make a buck or two, they’re more than entitled and after all it was free. I’ll really miss the podcast and even as a huge Sopranos fan the bits I’ll miss most are the two of them just shooting the sh!t as pals.

    You are bang on. Shrippa is an annoying buffoon, although he does have his good points like you said. Imperioli is good, but he always wants to bring up something to do with stage acting, or musical theatre. It really does reek of a sense of superiority. And yes, at the end of the day, most of the actors dont even know, and plain dont care as much about the show as we do.

    Steven S seems to be the biggest “wanna be gangster” around. Even in some of the Blue Bloods episodes where he’s at now, he makes references to himself looking and acting like a gangster.
    Looks to me like the only thing he’s held up is the all - you - can - eat line at the Golden Corral buffet.
