He was in cover bands when he was young. He moved to LA/Hollywood to try and get into the music business. On a chance encounter with someone in the movie business he was sent to auditions and got his first parts that way. He wasn't looking for an acting job in the beginning the story goes. He's plenty good at guitar and sings fine as far as I'm concerned. Rock On Johnny.
Not surprising Nicholas suggested this as with his looks he was prime film star material. He has always played though and people don't get that, just not as a career. His homes are full of guitars and music. His real love music
Saw him many times in Florida when he was with The Kids.....phenomenal!!...then he moved to California and the rest is history....great talent....and to play with Jeff Beck....heaven....andtheir cover of Isolation is spiritual....just brilliant.
Lily K Very, very True...:-) Being a musician in the seventies was very dangerous, acting was safer so Johnny only delayed playing for a while. Now , not only is he a Great Actor, you get to see and listen to his musical talent...:-)

His first acting spot was in 'A Nightmare On Elm Street', where he was swallowed up in his bed during his nightmare with Freddy Krueger. Later, Amber Heard tried to likewise swallow him up in court. She got spit out when Johnny produced tapes of her admitting to her guilt. I'm glad that she did! 😁
Certainly. I think he’s a terrific blues vocalist. But whenever Jeff is going at it, well Jeff is otherworldly. But I certainly respect Johnny. And Jeff hand picks who he’ll play with carefully.
Depp is an incredible creative force! He puts it out on the stage for all to see and it’s so easy for losers to criticize and just be jealous of his art. Keyboard bullies are cowards.

And not just because he's been around a long time,,, it's the body of work he's compiled in that time the different collaborations the different genres the different players. Hearing something new you pretty much know it's JeffBeck but you never know where he was going to pop up or with who.. still keeping it fresh on a regular basis. I'm up here today because I saw Johnny Depp on Instagram.... and he looked pretty good ... with Jeff Beck Singing a John Lennon tune maybe about the virus... isolation studio version 10:30 last night... Pleasantly surprised by Mr Depp Blown Away by Mister Beck ,, more impressed by John Lennon,, different conditions but the same reason.... being out in public at times can be dangerous then exhausting. Time to hit the Fortress of Solitude and wait out the storm... the storms vary but we all get them. John Lennon is not the only graphic example of why you don't build the Fortress of Solitude in Midtown Manhattan,, there you build Trump Towers. but Jeff Beck has one of the sweetest working Fortress of Solitude effectuated in the UK. Shortly after Joe Perry had his serious health scare about a year ago ,, spent some time there. Over the last 18 months Depp first looking like he needed the Solitude and in the last 3 months looks like he got it... and got healthy.. and maybe that happened with Jeff Beck And maybe they pick that song because it was now exponentially relevant both privately and publicly. Depp is always potent out of the gate when it's a quality project... IMHO he pretty much nailed it , frustration anger loneliness and I thought even sounded like John Lennon here and there. And then Jeff Beck fits and rips with perfection 2 guitar solos. so now I'm considering this a gift because it was a perfect time for this perfect song done so well and I'm re-energized , this song will get me through the next four weeks. And then morning came and I should have known not to look any further but I found an upload of the live shows... watched two songs and left the building. Hang in there everyone
@@iggyfritz7150: Yes! What people are REALLY listening to is 'TIME' that these greats have spent with their guitars. The more they practice and play, the better they get. When a young boy or girl just wants to fit in with others, they grab an instrument and bang on it for hours and hours, til they start getting really good. Then they find others who are like minded and talented with their instruments as well and form a band. Eventually they're playing gigs and on their way. Some continue on that path, others get married, some get married and have kids and move onto new careers. Some do both. Some don't realize that if they'd stayed with it, fate could've led them to greatness as well. Too bad for them. 🙁

I like watching Johnny with his friends. He has known many of these musicians he hangs out with for a long time. Manson also is an old friend of his. Music is his first love and that is what he does. He makes films and does enjoy the creative process during but doesn't like watching the film after. He is not into the whole interview red carpet process. He is happiest with his fans who he really does look after. Whether you like his music or not Johnny is a creative artist not a movie star. He is rare in the Hollywood scene. He always has been. When I first came across him he picked odd roles that just attracted him, not for the box office value. He was known in the 90s to be the choosy actor. Many although not box office big hits were critically aclaimed. I think POC was a big change for him and I really don't think when he went into that he thought it would become so big but he thought he could have fun with the role and make it his own. I think he was probably one of the most surprised how big it became. The thing is they are not my favourite films of his, I loved his earier offbeat stuff, however I get the popularity of POC as it appealed to all generations. However first and foremost Johnny is a musician whether you like him or not and I love how his musician friends are with him. They take him into their fold with real affection. Jeff Beck is great and he has encouraged Johnny alot. So have Alice and Joe Perry. It was Alice who first encouraged Johnny to start singing with the Vampires. I am just happy when I see Johnny with his musician friends. It is like he has come home and where he naturally belongs. Yes I would like him to get a meaty film role to suit him so I can watch and he can pay his bills, but it really pleases me to see him enjoying his first love. So instead of pulling him down be happy for him that he is enjoying his real love. If any of you consider yourselves musicians you of all people should understand this.

They had to remind him he sang through out his movie Sweeney Todd. Johnny says "Oh yeah I did, didn't I?" Also Beck wouldn't have had Johnny sing their remake of Lennon's Isolation. Being a Jeff fan since the Yardbird days and having seen him every time he's in the NY area the last 40 years and the New England area in the 70's, I come to believe Jeff is a perfectionist. Having said that I would highly doubt he would have Johnny Depp on stage if A) he is just doing it to get the press and B) he is a below par guitarist. I also had major doubt when I heard about Depp playing with him, but I guess he has passed the J B test. I can't tell how good or bad Depp is from this video, time will tell as they have mentioned they have been laying down tracks for a few years. Remember "God plays the electric guitar, he just uses Jeff Becks hands". There isn't a person on earth that can do what he has done the past 50+ years. He has reached out to every type of music and culture and replicated different voices using the guitar and even done Operas. Truly one of a kind. I suggest watching the Jeff documentary video "Still on the run" and hear what the other great guitar players have to say. "There is Jeff Beck, then all the rest" Joe Perry quote.

Wish I was there. But I agree with you 100%. Even if the vocalist was good (he wasn't, and who is he anyway?), Beck is at his best playing instrumentals. As they say with art, "what does not add, detracts. Here, the vocals detract from hearing Beck.
Jeff is the best, longest in the biz, still being creative with his band. Over the past 20 years he has had quite a few excellent drummers / bass players/keyboard players and singers. Great studio recordings and continuing tours. I wish this damn pandemic never hit because i could be at a Jeff Beck show right now.

I don't get all the hate either. Depp's singing clearly has merit and it was a great performance. Yes, it is live and any musician should know that live performance sound is rarely perfect but that's the beauty of it. It is what it is and you get what you get. Saw Jeff in Tulsa Wednesday, blew my mind when Johnny Depp walked out! Only time in my life I will probably be about thirty feet from a Hollywood A lister! Show was so much better till Depp came out,no need for him being there. At 75 Jeff Beck is still killing it!!!!!!!
Omg i cant believe they did this one. My favorite place to write is SRVs grave in Dallas. I know its Hendrix's but both superstition & of course little wing were covered by SRV. And yes props to S. Wonder on Superstition.
Johnny is a shy man and though he plays guitar very well, even in his first bands when he was 16 and 17 he always hung back. He never expected to be a vocalist & doesn't like being the center of attention. He is learning to come out bigger with the Hollywood Vampires as becomes more comfortable with the thought that, besides just hanging back and playing excellent guitar, he can really sing. He sung the score from Sweeny Todd, which is Not for a non-singer, and he sang and played in Chocolat - but he doesn't watch his movies, and he once said, about himself in movies, if he doesn't see it, it doesn't exist. He keeps his mind in the now and future. But there are few people in the world who play guitar well who can't carry a tune - they might not care for their voice, but they can carry a tune, Johnny can do more than that. It was his life's ambition, all he wanted to do. He's said to always have a guitar when he's shooting a movie for down time. Joe Perry has stated, seriously, that he took lessons from Johnny, what more can you say?

i was in tulsa last night..... really enjoyed jeff beck but after starting 30 minutes late they played for just barely an hour. not what i expected for sure but really glad to have seen beck play. he's a guitar wizard and his sound so beautifully unique

They have been together 2 or 3 years. New album just dropped. This year's tour has been pushed to 2021 due to pandemic 😕. Jeff Beck chose Johnny to remake Lennon's Isolation with him. Again, amazing! I hope you check out Heroes (many youtube videos, alot of them cellphone recordings from concert goers, but I like the official one from the Vampires the best) and Isolation on Johnny's Instagram or Beck's website. Pleasantly surprised by Mr Depp Blown Away by Mister Beck ,, more impressed by John Lennon,, different conditions but the same reason.... being out in public at times can be dangerous then exhausting.

John Lennon is not the only graphic example of why you don't build the Fortress of Solitude in Midtown Manhattan,, there you build Trump Towers. but Jeff Beck has one of the sweetest working Fortress of Solitude effectuated in the UK.
Shortly after Joe Perry had his serious health scare about a year ago ,, spent some time there.
Over the last 18 months Depp first looking like he needed the Solitude and in the last 3 months looks like he got it... and got healthy.. and maybe that happened with Jeff Beck
And maybe they pick that song because it was now exponentially relevant both privately and publicly.
Depp is always potent out of the gate when it's a quality project...
IMHO he pretty much nailed it , frustration anger loneliness and I thought even sounded like John Lennon here and there. And then Jeff Beck fits and rips with perfection 2 guitar solos.
so now I'm considering this a gift because it was a perfect time for this perfect song done so well and I'm re-energized , this song will get me through the next four weeks.
And then morning came and I should have known not to look any further but I found an upload of the live shows... watched two songs and left the building. Hang in there everyone

@@iggyfritz7150: Yes! What people are REALLY listening to is 'TIME' that these greats have spent with their guitars. The more they practice and play, the better they get. When a young boy or girl just wants to fit in with others, they grab an instrument and bang on it for hours and hours, til they start getting really good. Then they find others who are like minded and talented with their instruments as well and form a band. Eventually they're playing gigs and on their way. Some continue on that path, others get married, some get married and have kids and move onto new careers. Some do both. Some don't realize that if they'd stayed with it, fate could've led them to greatness as well. Too bad for them. 🙁

Johnny has a very LARGE family!!!
I like watching Johnny with his friends. He has known many of these musicians he hangs out with for a long time. Manson also is an old friend of his. Music is his first love and that is what he does. He makes films and does enjoy the creative process during but doesn't like watching the film after. He is not into the whole interview red carpet process. He is happiest with his fans who he really does look after. Whether you like his music or not Johnny is a creative artist not a movie star. He is rare in the Hollywood scene. He always has been. When I first came across him he picked odd roles that just attracted him, not for the box office value. He was known in the 90s to be the choosy actor. Many although not box office big hits were critically aclaimed. I think POC was a big change for him and I really don't think when he went into that he thought it would become so big but he thought he could have fun with the role and make it his own. I think he was probably one of the most surprised how big it became. The thing is they are not my favourite films of his, I loved his earier offbeat stuff, however I get the popularity of POC as it appealed to all generations.
However first and foremost Johnny is a musician whether you like him or not and I love how his musician friends are with him. They take him into their fold with real affection. Jeff Beck is great and he has encouraged Johnny alot. So have Alice and Joe Perry. It was Alice who first encouraged Johnny to start singing with the Vampires. I am just happy when I see Johnny with his musician friends. It is like he has come home and where he naturally belongs. Yes I would like him to get a meaty film role to suit him so I can watch and he can pay his bills, but it really pleases me to see him enjoying his first love. So instead of pulling him down be happy for him that he is enjoying his real love. If any of you consider yourselves musicians you of all people should understand this.

If Johnny couldn't sing then Alice and Joe wouldn't have begged him to sing lead on Bowie's Heroes. In an interview they say Johnny says "I can't sing!" They had to remind him he sang through out his movie Sweeney Todd. Johnny says "Oh yeah I did, didn't I?" Also Beck wouldn't have had Johnny sing their remake of Lennon's Isolation. I play these youtube videos over and over! I hope you check them out. Jeff and Johnny said Isolation is their gift to everyone who is enduring this pandemic isolation and we are in these crazy times together. (Johnny's instagram). Being a Jeff fan since the Yardbird days and having seen him every time he's in the NY area the last 40 years and the New England area in the 70's, I come to believe Jeff is a perfectionist. Having said that I would highly doubt he would have Johnny Depp on stage if A) he is just doing it to get the press and B) he is a below par guitarist. I also had major doubt when I heard about Depp playing with him, but I guess he has passed the J B test. I can't tell how good or bad Depp is from this video, time will tell as they have mentioned they have been laying down tracks for a few years. Remember "God plays the electric guitar, he just uses Jeff Becks hands". There isn't a person on earth that can do what he has done the past 50+ years. He has reached out to every type of music and culture and replicated different voices using the guitar and even done Operas. Truly one of a kind. I suggest watching the Jeff documentary video "Still on the run" and hear what the other great guitar players have to say. "There is Jeff Beck, then all the rest" Joe Perry quote.

I was there and it was a great show! Just too short. Jeff, Vinnie, and Rhonda are at a level way above the rest.
Wish I was there. But I agree with you 100%. Even if the vocalist was good (he wasn't, and who is he anyway?), Beck is at his best playing instrumentals. As they say with art, "what does not add, detracts. Here, the vocals detract from hearing Beck.

Jeff is the best, longest in the biz, still being creative with his band. Over the past 20 years he has had quite a few excellent drummers / bass players/keyboard players and singers. Great studio recordings and continuing tours. I wish this damn pandemic never hit because i could be at a Jeff Beck show right now.

I don't get all the hate either. Depp's singing clearly has merit and it was a great performance. Yes, it is live and any musician should know that live performance sound is rarely perfect but that's the beauty of it. It is what it is and you get what you get. The studio version of Isolation is excellent.

Johnny is a shy man and though he plays guitar very well, even in his first bands when he was 16 and 17 he always hung back. He never expected to be a vocalist & doesn't like being the center of attention. He is learning to come out bigger with the Hollywood Vampires as becomes more comfortable with the thought that, besides just hanging back and playing excellent guitar, he can really sing. He sung the score from Sweeny Todd, which is Not for a non-singer, and he sang and played in Chocolat - but he doesn't watch his movies, and he once said, about himself in movies, if he doesn't see it, it doesn't exist. He keeps his mind in the now and future. But there are few people in the world who play guitar well who can't carry a tune - they might not care for their voice, but they can carry a tune, Johnny can do more than that. It was his life's ambition, all he wanted to do. He's said to always have a guitar when he's shooting a movie for down time. Joe Perry has stated, seriously, that he took lessons from Johnny, what more can you say?

They have been together 2 or 3 years. New album just dropped. This year's tour has been pushed to 2021 due to pandemic 😕. Jeff Beck chose Johnny to remake Lennon's Isolation with him. Again, amazing! Johnny was in a couple bands when he was young. Nicholas Cage told him to get into acting. Johnny said it paid the bills and took care of his kiddos but his first love is music. I hope you check out Heroes (many youtube videos, alot of them cellphone recordings from concert goers, but I like the official one from the Vampires the best) and Isolation on Johnny's Instagram or Beck's website. They said it is their gift to everyone enduring the pandemic isolation and while we may be alone we are in this together. (Message on Johnny's instagram I think if you click on the picture where he is sitting in a candle lit cave) I hope you will enjoy them.
