Thank you so much for watching!
It's a beautiful morning on Samal Island. Our few days here so far are going great.
Many of you may be wondering why we chose to live here.
It has beautiful nature, lots of fruit, and no typhoon season, unlike some parts of the Philippines. We have also heard that many Russians live here. Maybe we would meet someone and feel more at ease.
Like the other small islands in the Philippines, tricycles are the main mode of transportation here. They are found everywhere. But most often near the market or town squares. I’ve never seen tricycles like this in my province. Most of them are painted in bright yellow. The color is different in each district. Tricycles from Samal Island, are forbidden to go on the main land.
There are also motorcycles, or habal-habal. They can be rented along with a driver for the day.
We decided to walk along the aisles of the local market.
The market has a meat department that sells pork, beef, and chicken. But still the main product here is seafood. Eyes are diverted by the different kinds of tropical fish, squid, shrimp and shells.
Bisaya, (or Cebuano) is spoken in the central Philippines on the Visayan islands of Cebu, Bohol, Siquihor, Negros, and in the south in most of the island of Mindanao.
Today most Filipinos know Tagalog. Filipino or standardized variety of Tagalog is the national language of the Philippines and is taught in schools. Therefore, I speak to the locals in Tagalog or English.
Rice in the Philippines is the mainstay of the table, so there are many different varieties.
Husband noticed a store that sells eggs. He was amazed! Eggs here are laid without a refrigerator.
He told maybe these chicks are from the egg store, too, since it's so hot outside.
It's interesting to watch the Filipinos at work and their business.
These men repair motorcycles on the side of the street and look so happy.
We were lucky enough to see Filipinos making spring roll wrappers. They are used to make the turon and lumpia shanghai that I've talked about in previous videos.
But what we saw next is even more interesting! The Filipinos roast a big whole pig.
This amazing dish is called lechon, and the master who makes it is a lechoner.
Lechon is one of the most popular dishes in the Philippines.
Shortly after we moved into this apartment, we got some uninvited guests-a horde of brazen tropical ants. We bought an insect repellent in crayon form and Boria started drawing borders and mazes in their path.
We woke up to this cute little bird pecking at our window. She was probably eating yesterday's ants. We opened the window and the bird greeted us with a good morning with its beautiful melody.
Amazing! This wild bird always sings the same nine-note melody, which it sings in the same order and rhythm. What music school did she go to?
Husband and I decided to go to the beach to buy fish. But the fishermen didn't go out to sea last night.
One man saw me collecting small shells and brought in a huge Koch sea shell.
His name is Osman. He is a local fisherman.
    Most kochs are edible.
Osman also gave us a shell of another large clam.
We are very happy to have such wonderful gifts and that we are making friends.
After breakfast we climbed into Kuya Ben's car. He offered to drive with him to their farm.
The road isn't smooth and we bounce around on the bumps. But the views on the sides are spectacular. So many plants and different tropical trees.
After about half an hour we got to the farm.
It's quiet and peaceful here. It was our family's dream to live in a place like this. Surrounded by greenery.
Kuya Ben's caretaker climbed a palm tree for coconuts. He makes it look so easy.
Kuya Ben picked some casava. Here the tubers are often used to make various desserts. Not many people know that the tops of the cassava are also edible. The best way to cook it is with coconut milk.
He also showed us around his mango farm. At this time of year, these mango varieties have no fruit yet.
Mango is the third most important fruit crop in the Philippines, after banana and pineapple. Mango is the national Philippine fruit. Filipinos love to eat it fresh, add it to ice cream, pastries, and other delicacies.
Three varieties of mango are well known in the Philippines: Carabao, Pico, and Indian Mango. But only Carabao is grown for export.
We ended this beautiful day with pancit, which I made. There is a belief that if you eat pancit, life will be longer. This is very good for us, it means we can spend more time together in this beautiful country.
    In the next episode:

We hope you will buy a piece of land and Boris can build a house for your family. I feel sad how bad the Cossack village elders treated Boris that he left his own country to move to a completely foreign country leaving behind his beloved Ataman Hut that he worked very hard to preserve. A new chapter in your life surrounded by friendly Filipino people!

At last! 🙌 Here it is! 🥰💖 I've waited for this everyday. What a wonderful day to start in a farm. I told you that Samalians are nice, hospitable and friendly people. Your Neighbors are so nice to give a you huge sea shell for decoration and had driven you along to harvest from his vast farm. A ride from the back of the vehicle and a drink from a fresh coconut shell is a good adventure.🌴 Glad that Mama Kat had come with you. 🌺 You can drive ants with a sprayer that can either spurt or push-and-pull. Then you fill it with a Baygon water-based insecticide. That's available in a pouch worth 100+ pesos in small stores or groceries. That ant would not stay long if you will spray so often. You spray when you're out so as not to inhale the vapor. Anyway, it is harmless coz it's water-based, but we must set prevention somehow. Bijon is a delightful snack that can easily fill-in your belly with satisfaction. 👌💓🌺

Such a fun video that I had to watch it twice before I comment! ☺️ I love the tricycles they have there. Like you, I have never seen that style before with the seating on the back. About the market, I am so envious of the variety of seafood. Here even in San Diego, the selection is very small and mostly frozen. 90% of the time we are just having salmon which gets boring after awhile. I miss seeing those vibrant fish eyes which reflects their freshness! Until now, I am amazed how the meats are displayed in open air and exposed to the heat without spoiling in Filipino markets!
As a kid, I also loved collecting shells at the beach. So nice of the fisherman to gift those beautiful conch and giant clam shells. You can hear the surprise and gratitude in Boris's voice. 🥰 What a treat to be given a tour at that farm also. You and Boris are like 2 little kids giggling riding in the back of that truck. So funny how Boris asked if there were snakes before he goes on the tour. 😂 I've also never seen a cassava plant before. It seems like a lot of work to harvest the tubers. Aaaah, such a treat to eat fruits freshly picked from the plants. You prepare such delicious food Darlene! 😋 I'm smiling just from the presentation of all the colors of the food. You are all looking great from all the healthy and nutritious fresh food! Till next vlog again! Thank you! ❤

Miss the simple life of province. I remember growing up going to the farm during summer time with all cousins and aunts and uncles for a few days. I am a city girl but I remember calmness and fresh air at the farm.

Hello! Island Life (Boris, Katya and Darlene).. how are you doing. Your Vlog is very interesting and informative. I like how it is narrated. Beautiful and very inviting to watch. Darlene, your husband Boris and your mother in law Katya are very humble. They are very nice people. As they say, if a son loves his mother so much, you can expect he will love his wife too very much. Darlene, you are very lucky to have them. Darlene, I can see in you, you easily get disappointed when things didn’t go right. Please be patient and just have strong Faith that everything goes well and smoothly. This is just a sisterly advice. Don’t take it wrong…. I can see, you are smart, with good ideas and well narrated all your videos. Please continue blogging. People or your fans are waiting for more episode… I am a silent viewer from New York. I’m originally from Dagupan City, Pangasinan. I know Sual which is neighboring Labrador, Alaminos. I lived in the US for more than 5 decade but still know how to speak Pangasinan. I’m proud, you are Pangasinense. God Bless you all. Wishing you all the best and lots of love and luck around you. Hugs and kisses to the 3 of you. Im happy to see Boris and Katya happy living in the Philippines. They adapt our culture so fast. Enjoy the beautiful nature around you. God is good all the time 🙏🙏❤

Davao in my native country is a very progressive city. It is one of the most progressive cities in my native country, I stand corrected.
Well done, you are living the good life that most of dream about.🎉🎉🎉🎉Enjoy to the fullest ❤❤❤
