  • In this episode, I discuss why I a Leica lover like myself chose to go with a Sony camera for my commercial photography and video production businesses.
    Don't worry Leica faithful, my M10D is still my favorite camera and it's still my go-to camera for personal and editorial work, but I needed something different for my business.
    This is not any sort of technical breakdown comparing cameras, but rather a practical explanation of my thought proces and how and what I look for in a camera system for commercial photography.

    Found this video really informative, it’s always interesting seeing comments on equipment judging a professionals choice for camera because of this or that spec, but what your saying especially in regards to medium format couldn’t be more true. Sony is an exceptional system for hybrid work and in a commercial setting. The ability to have lens work on both stills and cine bodies is amazing. There’s a reason AP, and NYT have been transitioning everyone to that system. Leica, Hasselblad, Phase One even their all great for their own reasons. Just don’t get why everyone gets all up an arms about different cameras. If your using them right a cameras no more than a hammer.

      Thanks Julian, man, I hear you about people and their camera brands, my goodness. My first Leica blog was published in PetaPixel and the comments were so nasty, relax people , it’s a camera :).

    For portrait photos I use a Sony A7iii. For street photography and EDC I use a Fuji X100V or a Ricoh GRiii. For a very versatile travel camera I use a Sony RX10 MK iii which has a 1” sensor and 24-600 equivalent lens.

    Hopefully you have an assistant to wade through all of the menus! Sony does sensors, not UI. Or lenses for that matter. But, all said, love your videos and your energy!

      Thomas, I still totally hate their menus and yes I’m always asking my assistant “how do we ….?” :).

    Interesting. So it sounds like your clients don't need/require medium format's "superior" dynamic range. I have been wondering for awhile whether 50 (larger) megapixels on a larger sensor is superior. Sounds like you and the client don't think so.
    Agree 100% that the Leica SL2-S is a great hybrid solution, especially with the Sigma DGDN lenses. And Leica USA is discounting it to $3895 currently. Quite a bargain for Leica!

    So when are we seeing a video that you are dumping Sony for Canon ? My two cents , do you home work about Sony , there are issues with built quality and service. I am no one to suggest this but the kind of work you do , Canon is miles ahead on so many fronts

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I didn’t actually stop using Leica, just started using Sony for all our commercial work. Sony was way ahead for video technology and they are always going back and forth but for combo video and photography we are happy w Sony overall.

    Curious why you chose the a7riv instead of the A1?

    • @AskMOTT
      @AskMOTT  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question, well the price jump was significant and we need back ups of cameras so it didn’t really make sense for us. I didn’t need the extra features that the A1 provides for my business.

      Agree, Hanoi every time, as Saigon is too commercialised for me. While North Vietnam still retains some authenticity, HCM City has Uncle Sam all over it.
