LOOKING FOR POLUNIN BALLET PERFORMANCES? You're invited to visit this page on my channel where I have been working on organizing all the quality recordings of Sergei Polunin's performances I've found on TH-cam. th-cam.com/users/IndiaInkplaylists?view=50&sort=dd&shelf_id=2 Most of these playlists (nearly 30 so far!) compile near-complete or even full performances of ballets including Giselle performances with seven different ballerinas, Swan Lake with three different ballerinas, the Nutcracker, Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Spartacus, Mayerling, LaBayadere, Coppelia, and many more!
Magical - i recently watched the Royal Ballet’s version with Roberto Bolle as well as another Polunin performance with another company - there really isn’t anyone to compare with Polunin - so lyrical, so strong, so in love, so angry - and such a great actor through his dancing - bravo!
I agree - he's fantastic in this role! (Of course, I think he's pretty fantastic in any role, but you summarized very well the qualities he brings to this particular role.) I'm glad you enjoyed the performance.
Yes, Bolle is extremely handsome and a very good dancer, but Polunin has a fine line which give him more grace and bigger, fluid movements. And in this role he has more caractere, you can feel the emotions of Armand.
Ohhh....I am absolutely overwhelmed...Magnificent ! Magical! THANK YOU, India Ink ! Thinking : perhaps we will never again in our lifetime see such extraordinary artists together as Svetlana and Sergei, here with intensely convincing emotional strength. Love it!
It's delightful to be able to share something that can bring so much joy to others. Thank you so much for commenting! Responses like this make posting videos feel like I'm getting to give little present to the world and it makes me very happy and excited when I find new Polunin "treasures" to share that aren't already on TH-cam. I do enjoy Svetlana and Sergei together very much, although I must admit for this particular role I'm partial to his performance with Tamara Rojo. As far as your fears of never seeing such extraordinary artists together again, I wonder if you've seen Sergei Polunin and Alina Cojocaru together? I know everyone enjoys different things about dancers, so you may not consider their partnership a match to his and Zakharova's, but I think the two (Polunin and Cojocaru) are absolutely lovely together and am happy to know they have plans to dance "Romeo and Juliet" together again in 2021. If you haven't seen them together, I have a Romeo and Juliet playlist here on my channel that you could take a peek if you're interested. th-cam.com/play/PLVViYmp7YHMOtAJDvENuNz6gN8e-44rvH.html Thanks again for commenting! Hope you don't mind that you caught me at a particularly verbose moment!
@@IndiaInk Thank you for YOUR reply ( and adding "verbose" to my english - I'm from Sweden - vocabulary; a word I did not know :-) and the news of Romeo & Juliet to come in 2021 ! Yes, I have seen Alina and Sergei together and , of course, I agree with you : they are wonderful as partners, especially in perfomances that "requires" a more youthful, yet passionate approach and expression. -I think Alina has such qualities : grace, heart and some sort of timelessness in her passionate expressions.... ( I still prefer Svetlana from Tamara as "Marguerite"; she embodies , in my view, a mystical concealed passion in all her movements and face, bringing maturety to her role, It simply suits her well.).... I love classical ballet, although I myself are a visual artist and poet, and can easily relate to the esthetics and power of energy-in-motion : music, body movements, colors, settings, dresses.....well, everything about it is food for the soul !
@Blue Serpent I do use some more obscure vocabulary at times. Even for native English speakers. Ha ha. Sorry for the confusion. I think you put it well about Svetlana's more mystical and concealed qualities - which is what I enjoy about her performances in "La Bayadere" and "Giselle". And is probably why I wasn't as drawn to her portrayal as Marguerite. I am apparently looking for a different quality in that role, even though I wasn't aware of it. It definitely has nothing to do with her dancing itself! It's always interesting to me how different people will perceive what a character is/should be like differently. Which, I suppose, is why there are so many different variations! Thanks for the insight. It will help me be able to figure out what it is that appeals to me about different dancers in different roles in the future. I'm very new to watching ballet. When it comes to performance art, I've actually enjoyed acrobatics, ice skating, and gymnastics (both men's and women's) much more. I'm also, like you, not a performer, but I can relate to and resonate with the aesthetics, energy, and emotions of dance and other athletic/performance art. My skill set - however limited it might be- is also more in the visual arts and writing category. Perhaps if I had seen something besides "The Nutcracker" when I was young, I might have become interested in ballet earlier. I'm afraid something about the choreography and pace of that ballet (edit: the version I saw when I was younger) bores me.. and not even Tchaikovsky, Kirkland, and the great Baryshnikov was enough to capture me. (Now, if I'd seen Baryshnikov's "Don Quixote" cups solo, that might have been an entirely different story!) My sister is very into dance (including musicals and tap as well as ballet), and I've had an appreciation for watching a ballet solo or pas de deux here or there, but when she shared a video of Polunin with me, that was the first time I felt about ballet that I HAD to see more. Something about not just his astonishing skill, but his presence and the energy and emotion that pours out of him really resonates with me. And, although I've ventured into checking out other dancers, I can't say ballet itself has won me over if it doesn't feature Polunin. (I have, and have always had, a huge appreciation for the talent and artistry of ballet dancers. It's just the long-form medium itself is lower on my list of what I find enjoyable to watch.) I DO enjoy watching other dancers in the productions he's in. They just wouldn't be enough for me to seek out their own performances... but maybe over time that will change. I just entered the ballet-watching world in May of this year. I'm afraid I've rattled on again! Thanks for watching and commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the performance and I'm happy I was able to share it with you and others.
I enjoyed it sooo much, and i don't understand, why svetlana said, she doesn't like it s much to dance with Polunin. Her favorit dancers were, i think, Bolle and then Rodkin. Very stange, becuase they aren't so dine or expressive than Polunin.
I couldn't avoid laught when I watched the mountain of flowers Sergei got at the end. It was even bigger than Ms. Zakharova's. Thank you for sharing it. It was marvelous. The long ovation they got was very deserved.
You're welcome! And thank you for the kind words. It is wonderful when these performances are captured on film so people can see them for many years to come. I'm very grateful to the person who recorded this, and to the people who recorded all the other videos available of these ballet performances and made them available online. It's a priceless treasure to be able to watch them.
The oxymoron icy hot is apropos here...Sergei's impetuousness, ardor and vulnerability embody a young man's first love evoking a preening bluebird in the first act to Svetlana's sophisticated ennui that later blossoms slowly into mutual passion in the second act. And the black clad spurned lover in the third act is raven like his arms like angry wings..Svetlana's austere beauty always gleams with a hint of tragedy behind her eyes that complements perfectly Sergei's pleading ones. Amazing chemistry and in the last scene his trembling hands and whispered words wrench my heart as does that last kiss. I'm a balletomane for decades there's no one like Sergei anywhere hes a demigod. If you want more of this story find Verdi's opera La Traviata deep emotional impact too. Thank you for this and other videos I'm the lady with the broken leg walking again. Ballet and especially Sergei have inspired me from the wheelchair to two feet. More work but he and these videos are a linchpin in my recovery💞
Great comparisons and observations! (If I recall you appreciate his great “shouldering” too 😉.) I’m glad to be able to share Sergei’s inspirational work with you! Much success on your recovery journey.
I'd only ever seen the excerpts from "I am a Dancer," so I was thrilled to see this come up in my queue. With such exquisite performances, it was easy to look past the deficiencies in the video! Thx so much for posting!
Thanks! Although I can't take credit for any of the video edits this time. I posted it as-is. My work on this one involved finding it in this high resolution, downloading it and working on the description and thumbnail, which takes longer than it probably sounds! I'm glad you enjoyed and I'm happy to be able to introduce you to the beautiful ballet world... and, of course, Polunin. :)
Except for applauding an exceptional solo, they usually save their cheers and applause for the end. (I think this is true of ballet audiences in many countries) I can’t speak for other dancers’ performances, but I know standing ovations and multiple curtain calls are hearty and frequent after ballets that Sergei Polunin performed in. ❤️ There are many of these curtain calls available on TH-cam, including at the end of some of the ballets here on my channel playlists. They love Sergei. (You should see all the flowers he gets!!) And they definitely love their ballet!
@@sabalight2558 I just re-watched the ending to see exactly what you were referring to (should have done that before my previous reply, but I wasn't in a place where I could easily watch the video!) But I don't know why you perceive this audience as cold? There is a rapturous burst of applause at 27:01 and continued applause and shouts of "bravo!" for over a minute and a half (through 28:36) that definitely had continued a lot longer because there is no recording of the part where all the cast came back onstage, and the applause continued after the video cut out. I notice, though, that the sound quality, does cut out around 27:07 (when the person started re-recording the curtain call) and you can only hear half the audio (I think it's an issue with the stereo sound and only one half of the speaker sound is coming out, but I don't know much about audio, so can't explain exactly what's wrong) so the shouts of the crowd are not picked up as well. But if you listen closely you can hear the crowd is still shouting and cheering and clapping. The audio is just amplifying the claps and "foreground" noise making it hard to hear the crowd like you can at 27:01-27:06.
@@IndiaInk Oh yes, you are right ! The first applause were cut very fast and the video continues with the applause of the curtain call. As usual slow applaus, thats why i said, the applaus were little. I didn't pay attention to the cut and the fact that the first applause were probably very long. Now i can hear the peopleshouting by the curtain call. Sorry and thank you !
