Wanted to put out this tidbit of information...
I got a PowerCab about 9 years ago. Love it, but outgrew it quickly.
*What I did* is still considered controversial by People who know me in the Hobby!! 😳 I couldn't (still can't) afford a PowerPro System...
So I replaced the PowerCab 1.5A Wall Wart with a 4 AMP 14V Brick Transformer!!

My *4 Amp PowerCab* has been running my 6' x 22' HO Scale Layout SAFELY, since 2013!!
I can't get anyone to see the merit of this.
It was a $26 upgrade, instead of a $300+ upgrade.

Great ideas. Not only a box for mobility, but protecting the hardware from the elements in case of a basement flooding, plumbing leak, or any other surprise
I am in the planning process of building a "portable" DCC programmer with a SPROG-Pi. That way all I need to bring is a keyboard, mouse, and monitor. Once I get it working, I'm going to add a Digitraxx PR4 to interface into anyone's Loconet. There will be a wireless router in the system to be able to run Wi-Throttle and it remote into the Raspberry PI. The possibilities are endless. I have to say I really like "The Box"!

I'm setting up non sound 6 output decoders for number boards and headlamps. I only have about 40 engines to program now, yay!

I got kinda hooked on my old 40K hobby. The videos posted by many wargamers give some good tips that are applicable to Model Railroading. (and I have a soft spot for 40K Knights/Titans!)
I just built myself a Throttle box similar to this and learned a few good tips I may include in a future iteration. A few pieces are still temporarily mocked up, but I"ll have to upload a video when it's done. The big difference between Murf's and mine is that mine is 100% self-contained; all my connectors are cut into the box so I can close the box and run the railroad. I also included a Raspberry Pi running JMRI with an LED screen in the lid and a wireless keyboard so there's no need for an external laptop. My system is extremely compact at less than half the size, but I use Kato Unitrack to create the programming track so the locomotive doesn't dictate the box size.

great tips John, this video will help me alot since i use NCE and thinking of using JMRI programmer
I have a similar box, I set mine up so it can be on the workbench or power the layout since I did not want to purchase a seperate Pro CAB or another Power Cab for the layout. I also included a CP6 to protect against shorts and plan on installing wall warts for 12v and 5v ports. It is also a good idea to have the USB Interface external as the LEDs need to be seen for trouble shooting of the JMRI connection.

Thanks Murf, not quite sure what liquid you're using in your track side water tower video, but I use Merlot in mine! I do find it works quite well as I try to figure out this whole DCC thingy.I did find your video quite informing, thank you for that. We've made all sorts of reds over the years. My favorite was a 2015 Merlot! (some of my friends call it "murflot")

@@tsgmultimedia First of all I really do enjoy your videos. They are great. But as for decoder pro, I have tried it in the past. I find it confusing to get to work on my computer, never can get it to work, and very frustrating. So I gave up on it and will manually program all my locomotives, because I can do that faster than I can get JMRI to work on my laptop anyway. Although I will say after I recently fried my Zephyr with a short after 15 or so years, I had a new one on order which was delayed. I ended up canceling that and going with an NCE Power Cab, and part of making that choice was your recent video on the Power Cab, which was very informative and helpful, so thanks, keep up the good work and keep the videos coming!
I really like your power cab programming box . If you have problems with your plugin coming loose you can try a tamper proof plugin it is a pain to plug in but it does hold a lot better. 😊 nice informative video.

@@murfmurf313 You might also look at childproofing products; if it can keep a toddler from removing the wart, that's more than good enough to use inside the box. Many just require removal of the plate screw and reinserting it over the proofer.
If you find a USB to Serial adapter and you cannot find a driver for your operating system, open up the adapter and look at the main chip. There should be a serial/identification number on it. Google that number and your operating system name (example: 04403023 Windows 10)... and find a driver that way. You might get a message saying that 'this is not an official driver' but it will most likely work. I've had to do this for about 30 such devices when we went to Windows 7 at work a few years ago and the company that made our adaptors no longer existed.
How do you wire up 2 tracks with one remote? Is there a way or a video of how to do that?
If only you could connect this to hornby's hm7000 decoders direct via bluetooth.

Thanks, Murf for this helpful video. I just installed JMRI ver. 4.26 on my computer and am using it with my NCE Power Cab. But I have a couple of question about what I saw in the video and are hoping you can give me some guidance. You said to look at the preferences and verify the connection. My connection page shows everything is set the same as you show in the video. But you also said to look at the default page. Your page has all the NCE's checked my page only has the "Command Station" checked. All the others "Throttles, Power Control, Service Programmer, Ops Mode Programmer and Consists" are not checked. Should they be? Also I noticed that on your main registry page you have the same situation that I am having. On the top middle of the page the power button is yellow and says "Unknown" next to it. My registry page is the same. Do you know why that button is like that? It should be either green for power on of red for power off. I hope you can shed some light on these questions.

Your best bet always is to go to your favorite internet search engine and type in the specifics of your equipment. Odds are, the answer will be right at the top of the results.
Very new to the hobby. Building a 4x8 layout. I have been to the NCE's web-sight. I am wondering if I should get a power cab or power pro. If you have covered this already, would you point me to that show. Thank you.
When my layout started to grow a lot there weren't a lot of options. The club I belong to (Silicon Valley Lines) uses a Power-Pro system so I went with that, along with 3 boosters. Now that NCE has the Smart Booster it opens up a different option when you start with a power cab. I'd go that way. If you need more power (running a bunch of lashups all sound) then you could grow to using a Smart Booster - ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/200913385-SB5-Smartbooster-for-Powercab - so you have options now that I didn't have with a Power Cab system.
I wish HO scale operating systems were as easy to use as MTH DCS in O Scale.
Hi John, nice video. I noticed in the power pro section of the video that Murf's track plan had 3 passing loops, how are they controlled with JMRI? I have a fiddle yard / storage yard area with 10 passing loops on my double track layout. So prior to using JMRI, I gave the pairs of turnout motors for each specific loop (entry and exit) the same DCC address so that both motors would operate together as a pair. I have just added JMRI Panel Pro, and can only switch the loops by clicking on one of the pairs of turnouts on my track plan. Is there a an alternative method without having to give separate address's to the pair of turnouts ? Hmm not sure if a passing loop (UK term) has the same meaning in North America?
HI Eve I'm not sure. I'll ask Murf to take a look at this question when I have a moment. I can tell you that Murf's layout from that video does not exist any more. He's building a completely different layout in that space, and it's really good!
I heard back from Murf. This is what he said,
"I had a total of 5 staging tracks on the upper level. I used JMRI Routes to setup paths through each track. The turnouts had individual addresses and then they were added into a route with the direction (normal or reverse) that they needed to be in for that route.
So fill in the turnout table - giving each turnout motor its own address
then make routes in the route table.
WiThrottle has the capability of toggling the turnouts or the routes"
@@tsgmultimedia Thanks John, I did expect that each turnout would have to have it's own address. In my instance giving separate addresses would interferes with my DCC Concepts Alpha Central Panel, where specific pairsof buttons control 2 turnouts each. The only way to get round that would be to add an extra panel to accommodate separate addresses. Not sure that I want to do that just for my fiddle yard, as I don't always use my laptop to control the layout. Thanks for asking though, and keep up with the great videos.
That was great! I have a NCE system and bought some pieces that I don't know how to add in its a 3 amp booster but it is a DB3 or dumb booster any idea how to connect it?
Your best bet is to check for info at NCE's website.
So I am about to set this up. I see you are using a flat cable from the Power Cab panel to the USB interface. The instructions say I can use the coiled cable that came with the power cab. Is that true or do I need to get another flat 6-pin cable?
The coiled cable that comes with the power cab is for when you use the "hammerhead" as just a throttle on another system. To use the Power Cab you need to use a flat cable. I bought a crimper and a roll of 6 conductor cable (6P6C) because it's also what you use to attach cab bus plugins for a layout. ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203841409-NCE-Cab-Bus-Cable-Parts-list has the parts list. There is a note on the NCE site that the power cab 6 wire cable should only be bought from them. (ncedcc.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/203868379-Powercab-flat-cable-length-) I made my own before reading that, so I must be grandfathered in ;) I made a short one for the box and it works!
