  • It was a year-long goal to make a special compilation of footage shot of my newest scratch-built models of Thomas & Friends characters, and here it is! A trainspotter's delight showcasing the narrow gauge locomotives of the Skarloey Railway, "filmed" performing their daily routine of taking passengers on scenic rides and serving local industries.
    All the models are made by hand and are filmed on specially made sets with natural scenic materials and scratch-built structures.
    Showing the very best of the railway, through the good days and the hard times, in different seasons, I hope this inspires all fans of Thomas & Friends to enjoy. Climb on the footplate for a nostalgic trip down the line and into the mountains of the Island of Sodor. All aboard!

    Stephen, it was a pleasure collaborating with you on this wonderful project - I believe this was fully powered from the heart. So much love and dedication went into this video to make it the Thomas that I knew as a young boy. A nostalgic experience dude. Boardwalk fries all around! ✌️

      Ah man! Thank you so much for the awesome collab Isaiah! Great job on the music, it is SO beautiful to listen to. This nostalgic piece was from the heart. As a Thomas fan, I really wanted to create something that reflected my connection to how the show moved me as a child, with the finely crafted models, the beautifully assembled sets, and the atmospheric music. I had a blast working with you bro, and it's been a pleasure working with you on this project I hope all Thomas fans can enjoy. Kudos bro, and I'll pass the vinegar and pepper with those fries! :D

    Stephen, you have been one of my biggest inspirations this year. Your attention to details brings back so much nostalgia while simultaneously taking me into your own world. (This is the best way to create nostalgic pieces!) The way you have created so many tantalizing vignettes in a small space is a nod to your abilities. Loved every second, and Tuggie did a stellar job too! (Duncan's bit especially) Well done!

      Thank so much my friend! That's encouraging to know my work has been an inspiration for you and others in the Thomas & Friends community. It's been a hobby I've enjoyed for the past 10 years, and on the web it's been 4. Incredible!
      I definitely feel I've come a long way in making something this special for Thomas fans and raising my standards in my model-making process, and I love it!

    I adore those added brass numbers on the chimney and bufferbeam! Also, I really am grateful to see Cora modelled!

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks so much! I really like seeing narrow gauge locos on various railroads around the world with details like that, thought it'd make a nice touch! British, African railways for the buffer beam labels, and Java railways for both the number plates and headboards.
      And Cora, she's the first and favorite Railway Series narrow gauge character and van I ever tried, and I'm very happy with how she turned out.

    • @RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS
      @RockyRailroadProductions_B0SS 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sudrian Railway Modeler Ah! I thought the chimney numbers came off the Isle of Man locos!
      Cora looks great, and I think she's a really undervalued character. Actually, I think that applies to most of the coach characters.

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's very true! I've seen those charming locos with those! Cora and the other SR coaches have a lot of untapped potential.

      Sudrian Railway Modeler So do the standard gauge ones too! For instance, the Mk. Is feeling superficial towards the older ex-SR maunsells, while the four-wheelers are mostly seen as novelties.

  • @carlmatthews8338
    @carlmatthews8338 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    I don't know why, but that part at 0:50 just does it for me when you can hear Rusty's exhaust. That little tiny sound makes everything seem so much more realistic. And the following shot with Duncan, my god. I love RWS Duncan especially in terms of his design and I love how instead of angry, he looks like he thinks he's invincible. Anyway, keep up the great work and I'd love to see more of this from you in the future.

    Absolutely fantastic in every sense of the word.

  • @MasterOfTheLemons
    @MasterOfTheLemons 7 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    Absolutely incredible work! As always, the model work is fantastic, but what I haven't seen before, at least in conjunction with your own models, is the eye movements. They are the best and most realistic I have ever seen. That extra layer of shine you put over the animation on the eyes makes it so convincing, as the lighting is the same no matter where they move. That little gleam is what makes it. It really does look like the engines have eye mechanisms. And the narrow gauge engines in the show never moved their eyes while they were in steam, either, so you never risk not meeting the show's level! I also love how you included eyebrow movements, it definitely adds personality, I especially enjoyed seeing it with Duncan! I loved the -slow- steep bends and ravine ahead sign, too, I just love how you combine TVS and RWS elements, taking the best of both worlds. These models, those eye animations, and everything else is just incredible, excellent work!

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thanks so much! I love putting RWS and TV Series content when I can. It makes it special and unique for me, from the scenes to the way the narrow gauge rolling stock looks.
      On the animation, I love giving these faces life using painting and keyframing with Adobe Software. Learned a lot from art college and my art career that I applied to this nostalgia piece, and I'm really happy the way it turned out :D

      MasterOfTheLemons just as a side note; if you had been watching the TCC for the past 5 months, u would have seen his animation skills prior to this.

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is true :D That's given me the opportunity to develop my method of making eye-catching facial animation, and I did a little bit of it here. It's definitely an expressive style all it's own, and for this I wanted it to be a little more subtle or just focus on the eyes, in truely classic TV series style.

    • @MasterOfTheLemons
      @MasterOfTheLemons 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @MasterOfTheLemons
      @MasterOfTheLemons 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have seen a great deal of it, but this is the first place it really caught my eye. I think it's because it's combined with such high quality models here, the combination is just so much better here.

      @SudrianRailwayModeler  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you kindly! So glad that resonated with you and other viewers here :) This certainly was a nostalgic piece for me. I felt this would be a great way to showcase the models I did at the time, and try to make it worth while by creating a visual presentation that told a story, because I believe that was a key factor to sustain interest. I wanted to include elements that Thomas fans love, and that was fun! This is something I'd love to do for my HO/OO scale collection and another for the Mid Sodor engines once they're completed.
      Thanks again for your support! :D

      Thanks so much! Those definitely provide me a good base to start with creating dioramas of scenes unique to the RWS and pulling together elements from both the TVS/RWS. Brilliant stuff, brings back good memories of watching the series when it first aired on PBS, plus the many specials and vhs tapes.
    The models and the practical effects always had a certain charm to me, especially when they'd go to the trouble of showing closeup shots of things like Toby's water tank glass and using real water in it, or a set of lamps and cutouts to make a glowing firebed for a firebox, etc
    This does a grand job of recreating the ambiance of the old show, right down to the animated facial expressions on the engines and the steam effects.
    Thank you for putting in all the time and effort to share this with everyone, my modeller's hat is off to you.

      Ah man thank you! That's exactly what I was going for. Modeling has always been my favorite stage of the process behind making projects like this, and bringing the sets to life with my scratch-built structures and scenics is just the cherry on the cake for me :) I wanted to include elements that Thomas fans love, and that was fun!
      It certainly has as a hobby given me the opportunity to utilize skills I use every day for my career from art college and yet largely being self-taught. This was definitely a nostalgic piece for me, and I'm glad it resonated with you! Thanks for your support. *High-five*

    Wonderful work, sir. I've been following your modelling work for some time on your blog and have been thoroughly impressed. Combining Lego 9v Train parts with paper and scratch-built parts was an inspiration and looks fantastic. To see them in motion now was truly charming. Special thanks to Isaiah too for the wonderful music, an excellent blending of classic themes (played perfectly, I might add, no easy task if much of the Thomas fandom's attempts are any indication) with unique elements all fit together wonderfully, really capturing the charm of the original setting and sounds while still maintaining its own sense of originality. Very fine work, all. I look forward to seeing more, perhaps even Sir Handle, Peter Sam, and of course the holy grail, Duke.

    Your modelling skills are superb and your sets and atmospheric editing really capture the scene. It's like a Neo-Season 5 environment. I think it speaks for all of us that we really appreciated your efforts and patience in creating this. Everything from the liveries to the matching music that Tuggie provides to the general feel.
    Please do continue making these videos. Adventures in large scale modelling really works wonders! You've inspired not only the Thomas community but even those who have moved on to other forms of virtual railwaying. You've really made my day :D

      That really means a lot to me. This nostalgic piece is a response to the way the experience of watching the Thomas & Friends stories impacted me as a child. It inspired me to teach myself model-making as a hobby, which in my education in the arts served as a basis for learning crafting models in animation production. Thomas & Friends will always be remembered for the craftsmanship of their gorgeous models, and the quality of visual storytelling for children of all ages.
      It's a hobby that's taken a lot of practice to produce, but I really enjoy it! I love combining elements from various seasons, like giving the engines and rolling stock elements from the Railway Series like their liveries, the style of how the models looked from Season 5 of the TV show, and the sets I enjoyed seeing in Season 4.
      Thank you so much for your feedback and support! I do have a lot planned to grow the channel in my spare time, and I hope I can sustain this fan channel. It's given me an opportunity to connect and geek out with other Thomas fans around the world, and it's been a joy to share this hobby :D

      That's right! All of the locomotives and rolling stock are made from scratch, and just about everything you see on screen is made by hand. I can appreciate the craft of building model railroads from the grown up when there may be no kits available. After 10 years of perfecting and improving, I love it because it gives me the ability to make these models the way I'd like my toys to be growing up.

    You know, I'm rather curious to see these models next to the LG Scale models of Bachmann Thomas, to see whether they're to scale when next to each other :)

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you! That would be fantastic. I made these models to match the look of standard and narrow gauge trains together, so when I acquire the Bachmann Thomas models, they'll fit in the same scale. I look forward to making scenes at Crovans Gate Depot, the Wharf, and the Transfer Yards. :D

      That'll be an amazing sight to see man!! Hope that the other models (Sir Handel, Peter Sam, and Duke) get finished before you get the other models.
      Btw, are you only doing RWS characters (as in you're not thinking of doing Luke, Victor, etc)?

    • @SudrianRailwayModeler
      @SudrianRailwayModeler  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh of course! I have ideas for Luke, Freddie, and Mille. I like these TV series characters a lot, including Bertram especially.
      I'd like to make them with livery and detail variations I have planned for them, so as soon as the base characters get done and I make some progress on more rolling stock like coaches and vans, I'll be focusing more on giving minor/underrated characters some new life too! RWS & TV series characters :D

      All of these locomotives are remote controlled, using the LEGO Power Functions System for trains. I have a blogpost that showcases how I make a customized chassis for each loco:

    Stephen.....just wow. What can I say? I am absolutely amazed by this. As someone who loves S5 and considers it one of the finest examples of TV/Film, I believe that this brilliantly captures the charm of it and still brings something new to the table without it feeling jarring. Seeing Rusty's black livery in a beautiful S5 style model is so cool to me. I adore how the scenery and sets were done. The amount of weathering and detail is why this looks so great and reminds me so much of S5. The weathering in this is better than everything S6 onwards in my opinion. One of the reasons David Mitton's work was so great was that he managed to make Sodor and even the Tugs universe feel real at times. I don't think I've ever seen a fan video make Sodor look this real. If the show had started looking like this after S5 instead of going in the less realistic direction it did, I'd be a ok with it! This perfectly captures what Thomas is all about to me! Just seeing the visuals of the Skarloey Railway in this and thinking about them, makes me think about what exciting and heart warming stories these characters could have. This deserves to be shown at some sort of Film event or debuted at a Thomas Convention (if it existed, maybe we'll have ThomCon someday, haha). I'll definitely be taking so much inspiration from this for my secret Thomas project I'm working on. The music was amazing too. Anyways, thanks for making such incredible content dude! The Thomas Community just got another video to inspire users in the future, much like Mad Bomber and Thomas Blows His Stack inspired many of us back in the day. Amazing work. :)

    The work you've put into these models, sets, animations ,and filming is beyond incredible. This is higher quality and more lovely to look at than some of the actual TV series shots. Bravo for having such amazing handiwork and having the ability to scratch-build at such an amazing level! You are a true inspiration for us community members.

      Dude that really means a lot to me. Now that I've gotten to know you as a friend, it's wonderful to connect to things we really adore about the Thomas show: the modeling, the scenicing, and the filming along with other elements such as a music. As a nostalgic piece, this was fun to make and I loved making it with Isaiah. Thanks again brothuh ;)
