  • A Hyundai with a broken starter! Happens all the time. A poorly designed starter will do that. I put a new one in.

Nice job, I am going to be 70 this year, retired, still work on stuff, Glad to see I am not the only one to have a shaky hand. The only improvement could have been to put Shannon in the video

Great video. Just what I needed to removal/replace the unit myself. Many thanks!

Thank you for the video it was very helpful! I removed just the battery, air filter hose (not the air filter), and throttle body in order to get the starter in and out. It was very helpful to get underneath the car ( I didn't jack up it) to help hold the starter in position while someone on top put the bolts in. Try to get the torque lbs for the starter and throttle body bolts I just guessed what it was which it felt like 25 ft lb on the starter bolts and 15in lbs on the throttle body, but please research it if you can.

This was an extremely helpful video. It would have taken me forever to figure how to get it out without you. Can’t thank you enough!

Nice job. I just paid Firestone $700 for a new starter on a 2018 sante fe. I' a good mechanic but, $700 well spent! I know when to throw the towel in !

I understand. I really don't like doing plumbing especially under a kitchen sink, laying on my back half in the cabinet.. Nope, happily pay the pro. Thanks for commenting!

Great video! How long did it take you from start to finish? Do you think that the bottom splash pan needs to be removed or can all access be done from the top? Thanks!

It's been a while, but as I recall, it was a a few hours on day one and then a few more on a second day but I didn't know what I was doing plus I was filming. I found that the bottom splash pan had to be removed so I could manipulate the starter from underneath while my wife started the bolts from above. Good luck!

I have the exact same issue, with my 2011 hyundai santa fe. Went to pull a part today, to get one. They didn't have one for my model santa fe. But they said the 2008 to 2013 sonatas, were interchangeable. So I got one off a 2009. Haven't changed them yet, so don't know if this one works. But at least I know how to do it now. I will be taking the manifold off, to make it a little easier. They had a couple videos on youtube, but they really weren't helpful. Thanks for the video.

Glad if I helped. Not surprised if the starters are interchangeable, hope it is. If you have a helper to start the bolts from above, the manifold can stay on. If you are doing it alone, the manifold off will help. Thanks for watching and commenting!

BMW uses those screw rivet things too. Changing the starter out on my Z4 was pretty tight also. It's under the intake at the back of the engine. My hands are way too big also but I got it without removing stuff.

I thought my starter on mine is out but it is making like zero sound other than the click 🤔 battery is fine. Weird. Thanks for this video! My ghost dad won't work on my car 😅

I am confused why did you need to go underneath the vehicle you never explained why you took the skid plate off

When installing the new starter I was manipulating it from underneath while my wife started the bolts from above if I remember correctly.

thank you for this video!! ive been having issues starting my car for about 10 months now. i got the crankshaft sensor replaced about 6-8 months ago then had the starter replaced not long after. then i ended up doing the alternator and the battery. now im just stooped cuz it wont start once again. its completely random when it chooses to start or not. i can leave it sitting for a week and have it start right up but some days i’ll run into a store for all of 5 minutes, and it wont start again. since i fixed the alternator i havent had to jump it to start it but im just not sure what else it could be. any ides?

When the starter begins to fail it is often intermittent. The one I repaired in this video had stranded its owner and was towed home. I tried it, it started normally. Next time it didn't. If you can hear the starter whining away without engaging the flywheel, it's failing. If you can not hear the starter turning at all, it could be lots of different things. Check all connections for proper tightness if you are sure your battery is good. Hope that helps.

@@OGGarrettsGarage thank you, i’ll keep you updated! my battery was good when i checked it a couple days ago. i have almost never been able to hear the flywheel engage when my car doesnt start. i heard it the first time when i replaced my crankshaft but at this point i feel like i’ve tried everything lol. gonna take it to my uncles shop in a few weeks and see if it might be the powertrain control module. thank you so much for your help!

Might be a bad starter relay switch.
