Ed McMahon said that anyone who said they knew Johnny is lying.
He was extremely private and shy. But his job was to make people laugh and he did. For 30 years.

I miss women from the '80s and early '90s. They were absolutely fantastic and have no equal today.

In australia we had our own version of johnny Carson named graham kennedy who hosted a talk show called In Melbourne Tonight from 1957 til 1970 then The nationally syndicated Graham kennedy show from 1972 til 1975 after the locally famous "crow call" incident when he quit after the 9 network wanted go from live to time delay pre record to avoid any future controversies.
His replacement was an american called Don Lane who hosted The Don Lane show from 1975 til 1983 due to low ratings, no one replaced him until 1999 when John 'Rove' Mcmanus hosted Rove live until 2009 and the short lived Micallef tonight in the mid 2000s

Also hosted Blankety Blanks or your answer to our 70's era Match Game, for 2 seasons from 1977-1978. And unlike here where it ran past its' best days ending in 1982 after a 9 year run across Network and Syndication, he chose to end it on top before it became a shell of itself. Ballsy move really as popular as it was. But then he always was that type of a guy from what I've heard/seen about him.

Mart Hart definitely knew the real Johnny Carson. She vacationed with Johnny, Johnny's wife Alexis, Johnny's lawyer Henry Bushkin and Henry's girlfriend Joyce DeWitt. The group spent time in the south of France. Mary experienced the darker side of Johnny's personality during the trip. You can read more about it in Henry Bushkin's interesting book "Johnny Carson.

Late night talk shows are completely devoid of Johnny's entertainment. Jay and Dave could also "entertain." Now, there's an untalented, politically boring, or silly vacuum. It's over. So over.....

Johnny’s “dark” side doubtlessly must have been the result of work-related stress.

I loved Johnny but I think still he made a huge mistake by not having Dave Letterman replace him. I think he may have thought that Dave would have been funnier...and he would have been right.

mrGoesto11 sorry, Dave was and is a punk! Tasteless humorless, picked on people for ratings! A washed up washed out loser! Let’s all be honest here, Dave’s boat set sail decades ago! Bon voyage!,,!!

@@buzzbuzz132Picking on people to get ratings? Like the Joaquin Phoenix episode, lol? The only one here without a sense of humor is you. Dave was a much better interviewer than Leno, et al. Dave's show set standards to be copied but never as funny by everyone after him. Leno used the tired man on the street bit asking geography questions to prove that Americans for the most part are stupid. Dave's show lasted twice as long as Leno, & had 3x the awards. Audience was primarily college educated because Dave was at a different level than the others.

It was never Carson's decision as to who the new TS host would be. It was no secret that he always preferred Dave over Jay though.

NOBODY was better at hosting a tv show than Johnny Carson. Unfortunately, he was a miserable, nasty, short tempered, SOB in his private life.
