Something went wrong with the lighting on the camera or something, I guess. Looks weird and compressed. Maybe cause I recorded at 1080/60, not sure.
I know y'all Buck-Tick fans like this one, but how about you new listeners? Dig this one? Old school cool!

Thank you for the reaction!! B-T are god status in Japan and not enough Westerners have discovered them yet!!
Sakurai-san (vocalist) is a poet and the main lyricist. He writes some very deep, introspective lyrics-amazing to delve into! He’s definitely a major influence of both Kyo (Dir en Grey) and Tatsurou (MUCC). 😎

I think he said in an interview once that this song had something to do with the death of his mother (others do too, Long Distance Call is completely about that, Sakura, etc.), but I'm not sure if the entire song is just about that or if there's more to it. But, I'd assume that at least "before I got to say goodbye" kind of thing - maybe she died in the night before he could get there? I don't know. But I know he mentioned this song in reference to losing her.

In my opinion, BUCK-TICK guitarist Hisashi Imai plays the guitar as a synthesizer.
He makes heavy use of guitars with built-in synthesizer pickups, sustain machines, theremin, and other circuits to produce sounds that aren't like guitars.
Many of his successive guitars have unique shapes as well as special functions.
There was also a time to make a new guitar every time the album was released.
This is because the sounds and visuals that follow the album concept are different for each album.
It's very interesting to me that his musical roots are PUNK ROCK.

    • @JabbyMayoCD
      @JabbyMayoCD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I’m always interested in seeing how people utilize the guitar differently. I remember Dragonforce blowing my mind by using the whammy bar to make video game sounds with their guitar.

Yes, it's s a reference to Icarus with fame as a sun. He wasn't able to say goodbye to his mom as he was on tour when she was in the hospital.

Wow, Thank you sooo much! I was a bit out of it this morning so I only see this now 😅
This song means the world to me. It's one of my favourite songs ever and I think you captured a lot of the reasons why I like it so much. The instrumentation is simply fenomenal. If you play the track without the vocals there is only a minimum of melody and the bell sound becomes like a theme that reminds me of the bells in a music hall or theatre (or church/school) before the concert/play/service/class starts. It's like a warning bell to leave your private self behind and slip into a role. The lyrics seem very streight forward and honest. I think Atsushi is singing from his perspective as a (by then already very famous) singer. As a small actor you might be able to leave your characters on stage but if everyone sees YOU as the character you portray the lines start to blurr until you're not entirely sure who you are any longer (and no-one is themselves when they enter a stage. Believe me, a stage does strange things to people. Some become more bold and are able to show a side of themselves that is usually hidden, but that doesn't mean that they actually ARE that person in normal life. Most people create characters that resemble them but are more 'public friendly'. Every person who works in front of an audience or camera does that.)
But like Marie T I would also extend this to pretty much every working men and women's lifes. Isn't it weird how many people define themselves over their profession? If I asked my Dad who he was he would answer with "A mechanic" but in front of his colleques/at work he acts like a totally different person (I know, I worked with him for a while between school and university). So who is he (who am I, who are we) really?
I interpret the "being burned by the sun" part similar to you. But it can happen to everyone who strives for "more". The moment you get what you want you notice that it can very easily burn you. The presumably good and the bad never come seperately when it comes to fame or power.
As a teenager I listened to this song without knowing the lyrics (just liking the music and melody), as a student I knew about the lyrics but couldn't yet relate to them, after a major burn-out and noticing that I spend 5 years of my life loosing myself to a job in which I could do no good and essentially made a carrier out of the misery of others, I hear this song quite differently. Now it's a reminder not to make the same mistakes again. It's impossible not to play a part in this world, but if that's what we have to do we should at least make sure that we like the part (the person) we play.

    • @JabbyMayoCD
      @JabbyMayoCD  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I 100% agree with what you said about everyone becoming someone else once they step on stage. My job requires me to basically put on a performance all the time, and work-me is very different from the real me. I think that’s part of the reason I wanted to start doing TH-cam, I’m able to channel some of that into these videos, but at the same time still keep it more along the lines of the “real me”
And I definitely understand the burn out. I’ve recently left my job that I’ve had for the past 7 years due to being burnt out. I’m still doing basically the same thing at the new job, but everything else being different makes the entire experience feel fresh.

HAHA! Funny thing: It was actually Atsushi, (buck-tick's Vocalist,) who Inspired Kyo to pursue Music in the first place!!! Story goes that s high school buddy of his left a picture of the Charismatic BT vocalist on his desk. Kyo Looked at that photo and thought, "Damn, I want to be that guy!" So therefore: If it weren't for BUCK-TICK/Sakurai Atsushi, Both Kyo and quite possibly Dir en Grey would've Ceased to exist as a household name in the J-metal community! (^ w ^)v

Frst things first: thank you so much for all these BT reactions :) sad that I hadn't seen them until today but honestly I have always enjoyed BT alone more than together as it impacts me profoundly. And super appreciative of your lyrics analysis - it pains me how a lot of people with no Japanese knowledge will react to what is obviously a very theatrical piece and not bother to try to get it at all. So very appreciative!!
In my opinion your analysis may be spot-on on one hand - they did some other songs referring to Icaros so pretty sure that may have been a deliberate association. On a personal level I could share a story. The vocalist/lyricist, Atsushi Sakurai didn't intend to be a professional musician though the others did (maybe? not sure about Hide but at least the other 3) just have fun. Their connections, weird musicianship (for the time/place) and clothing made them blow up and so began Buck-Tick Phenomenon with 87 major debut. On that year Atsushi's dad passed away - he was a struggling alcoholist ; band members were involved in Basic Rockstar Scandals like drugs (big thing over in Japan .. ) driving accidents, messy relations and all that according to rumours and of course media loved it. Atsushi got into alcohol contrary to his wishes he hated what it did to his dad but kept going since they were famous ; by 91 (this release's year) B-T Phenomenon was going strong meanwhile his mom was fighting cancer - she passed on that year and he has a song "Long Distance Call" that tells the story of his last call to her and it really sounds like he barely had the time and energy to devote any attention then. This release has a lot of themes relating to the sun (it's called "mad sun" after all) and a lot of people still consider it one of their strongests but I can't help but think of the suffering he must've felt - questions in the lyrics about getting out of it alive or not probably refer to his mom and also to his soul - will I have a place to return to when all of this madness is over? So yes in my humble opinion the Sun may have been the one that burned Icaros or it may be Japan (specifically the media and the grandmas' opinions and all) itself. In the end he kept doing this thing brilliantly for 35 years and helped so many until finally passing away on the stage - thankful for everything and hope his brilliance is acknowledged. Thanks a lot for your reactions seriously :)

I've never seen this performance before, more familiar with a later version (Mona Lisa Overdrive) where he ends the song with a spine-chilling shriek, but the extra key change and longer outro from this version was fantastic!
One interpretation on the lyrics that I have is about the stress of going out (to perform or not) and staying up all night until the sun rises and you feel like death because of the intensity of the night.
My personal favourite BT song (a hard question haha, there's so many)! Dress was definitely the first song I heard from them (OP to Trinity Blood anime) and got me looking into the band back in 2009. One that has been finding its way onto my playlists most recently (apart from Kemonotachi no Yoru which I recommended previously) is 'MISS TAKE 〜僕はミス・テイク〜'. That one's definitely been a constant fave since it came out in 2012 :D

Oh, and what is not usual at BT - it's not only Sakurai who sings there. There are songs with double vocals and they are contrastingly unusual. And this, too, for some reason, is always overlooked from the recommendations. And it always seemed to me that such things should, on the contrary, be shown first. Here are some of the things to watch:
2016 - Future Song (Tour Atom Miraiha No.9)
2000 - Cyborg Dolly: Soramimi: PHANTOM (ONE LIFE, ONE DEATH CUT UP) or (DIQ 2019)
1998 - MY FUCKIN 'VALENTINE (Sweet Strange Live Film) or (Tour Atom Miraiha No.9, 2016)
2003 - BUSTER (Mona Lisa OVERDRIVE -XANADU-) or (FISH TANKers Only 2018).
2013 - SANE -typeⅡ- (FISH TANKers Only) or (RAZZLE DAZZLE 2010) or (FISH TANKers Only 2017)
2020 - Villain (ABRACADABRA LIVE ON THE NET)
    2003 - RHAPSODY (DIQ)
2003 - Mona Lisa (Mona Lisa OVERDRIVE -XANADU-)
2019 - Aikawarazu no 'Are' no Katamari ga Nosabaru Hedo no Soko no Fukidamari (Locus Solus, 2019.05.26) (or MV 1995)

      @УльянаОсадчая-д8щ 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@JabbyMayoCD nope(its not what i mean), the difficulty is that not all of the concerts parts loaded to TH-cam. I would have downloaded it myself, but I'm not sure what is there with copyright (I don't use a TH-cam as the maker|dowloader of a video, usually I just watch it. I didn't comment on anything earlier) and of course, according to the correct (legal), all these videos are really elite and not free pleasure, huh.
about what it all - for one song, different live concerts of different years are very DIFFERENT (moaaar repeats XD), and even the lives of one year of neighboring concerts can be very different. And some of them can cause shock (stylistic? I don't know what to call it huh) at the first viewing (2017-18 was like the apogee of shock-staff even for old fans, although there is nothing particularly vulgar or meaty, like Dir, of course but a lot of stylistic trolling from Sakurai xD it was the anniversary year, they always have a lot of fun on the anniversary) I'm not an oldfag fan and came from Bowie, it's hard to shock me like that, it's more funny for me backward (but I also caught some of my shock and screams).
Of course, if these parts are not on the TH-cam - there are many other songs and even the simplest live BT and in poor quality - it's still cool stuff (you just want to offer the best when you know that it exists). Lives from the Korean Sojo fest have been watching in pixel quality for years (there is no other) - and they are masterpieces.

It is very cool that you are analyzing the music, as well as reading the translation, a very competent approach. I watched many BT concerts without prior knowledge of songs and translations, and of course almost everything is clear without translation due to performances and emotions. but understanding the meaning gives more deception. But in general, there is nothing strange that the translation is not very clear, there and many Japanese build many theories around their texts. Abstract texts are the coolest.
2014 is the apogee of abstraction in the work of BT (Dadaism and Surrealism from the artistic directions of the 20th century), and it would be cool to see reactions to newer and already completely experimental songs. For example Mudai. Or DADA Disco. 2016-2017. Boy septem peccata mortalia is really fun and shock stuff (Why all reaction on BT in the net is only slow and sad songs? They have many of dance, funny and close to porno-trash ones, if everyone think that its will be scary for men (is it fun only for girls i mean? don't think so) watch this or it's not serious music? if it fun and kind of funservice? (yeah, these funny dudes are like the mother and father of all Japanese fan service in principle. among other achievements, and great sence of humor too) from fun stuff - Elise no tame ni 2012 Yumemiru concert (or Vanilla and Yasou), Gustave from Locus Solus 2019 (1st day) just great and cool smth like Lullaby-III 2013 Fishtanker's only live.
But first in recommendations is Mudai (2014 Arui wa Anarchy) of course. it is a masterpiece of masterpieces ever. (if you need a more shocking and serious live version of this song (not for children, for sure) - see the performance 2016 Atom no Miraiha).

@@Sayu277 oh, I can revisit all 550 shades of mudai endlessly. in 2019, Sakurai, of course, steeply departed from the original with a softening of all sharp corners, which makes the character of the song seem even younger in age, and the theme is even more creepy. But due to the softness, the first impression of the song will obviously be less impressive.

Atsushi is one fine man, but i am no way watching them solely for that reason. If they didn't give pleasure for my ear and soul too, it would't last long. Buck-Tick create strong atmosphere on stage, one of my personal criteria for liking a band.

It's such a lovely thing we have the opportunity to watch their concerts for free, i think for a 4th time since last year's crap started. This time 13 live shows in a row - each Sunday on their youtube channel.

Could you please react to Kagerou? They're not around anymore (they've disbanded and the singer has passed away) always been one of my favourite bands, and Kyo helped make them who they were. The band has a lot of influence from Dir En Grey's early days, and the singer Daisuke was one of the most charismatic singers in Japanese music history. When the lead singer died, he was working on a solo album but never finished it, lots of other famous artists came together and finished it (including Kyo). Daisuke was very active in the visual kei and jrock scene while he was alive, and he had a lot of influence on other bands, like D'espairsray, which you reacted to earlier. You seem to enjoy the fun songs, so I think you'd really like XII DIZZY (th-cam.com/video/K_llkLxlpFA/w-d-xo.html).

Attention, too many words, sorry for this X"""D
About influence from American\Western rock music (and visual key).
Oddly enough, but there was information that even Japanese groups in the form of a compliment do not perceive BT as a Japanese group (in the sense of perception (for them) that Western music is cooler than Japanese). And this is a strange and self-deprecating compliment, but in fact, with BT, this can be seen in different ways - from the construction of music compositions to the texts (the manner of singing too, but I understand this worse). And I haven't seen any of the new bands yet follow them in terms of music and lyrics. Basically, there are many imitators of style (clothing) or stage techniques (this increasingly often looks very weak and like cloning, not processing into its own). And in this sense BT is not Visual kei, even in the weirdest outfits or in the early years (usually the clothes are very laconic and silhouette is important. Or the contrast of two silhouettes. one dark, another bright, like Jester / Pierrot and Death. direction of the comedy Del Arte). In all this is just a very cool stage costume, invented by their own brains (design / lighting of the stage, too. Not the designers do for them, but sew / construct after discussing ideas), this all relates to the theater and to the conceptual idea.
Visual kei for me against the background of this - childish attempts to do something unusual and pretentious, without a conceptual representation and understanding why. (if the concept is, it is too simple, an example is Malice Mizer. the concept is "we are goths", the music is heavy and organ, and violins (well, are we goths ?? let's do gothic music!) we will dress like goth dolls. and also latex, and black cloaks . Well, we are goths, no?) It always looks like "I'll put on my mother's dress and shoes, and I will make up her lipstick to look cooler. And then mutations on top of mutations - how to beat them? Let's make it even weirder and more bright! And a bow on the side!" (lenses in the eyes, paint in hair, cut 3 dresses into pieces and sew them together, well, now it's quite unusual???). All these tricks can be cool too, if they are correctly presented with an idea. But in Japan it became mainstream direction and gave rise to many identical groups that look like a children's play (music is also repeat on repeat and no idea).
That is, it's all about the visual - but it's a different visual. What later became known as Visual kei is a completely different direction. Maybe someone will show something really cool about this for me later (this often happens), but I have not seen it yet.
And it's very very GREAT that Dir en Grey are gone from this, but they had their own ideas before, this seems to be the point.
And they cannot be called directly followers of BT, there are a bunch of other idols in the first list, Kyo said about Sakurai (I don't remember literally) that he considered the coolest vocalist (not in terms of vocals I think, in the complex, and it is), Die drinks with Imai and they went to a fashion show together (sounds like a joke), Toll carefully scolds Shinya about their drumming stuff (like take this crap off your leg, then there will be a fracture). Just partying moments.
Okay, I'm lying, I just read a little about it. Found an interview now. Toshiya's signature in the bar led to contact with BT, and there were a ton of praises from Die 's childhood (and there was an interview of admiration from Shinya's childhood too), and Yuta often hangs out at Die's house as a result. And Die was drinking somewhere in karaoke at an after-party with Sakurai and Hide. In short, BT, as the main drunks of the Japanese rock scene, is always drinking with someone(that's normal). And there are very few translated interviews (information). So we don't know anything at all =D
There were groups that looked like visual kei - but thoughtfully (Guniv Tools, for example, if the whole direction were like this, I would love it. This is a visually heightened masquerade, but cynical and not childish. But the music is just as crazy and cynical, therefore clothes match it). But they also ended their activities.
I hope this does not sound too general and vicious, this is a topic for a whole scientific study. All of it important to me, because I'm an artist and I pay attention to the cut of clothes or lighting. And how does it all work to serve a song. (Bowie and his work to blame, yes yes)

I think your critique of visual kei is perfectly fine. However, I think it's just something that can be applied to most genres of music. For example, in black metal, corpse paint and satanic lyricism are basically a meme and the genre is pretty much just a parody of itself. That's why I can only really get into black metal that takes more unexpected routes like many of Immortal's songs. There's similar examples in most genres.
Like you said, Dir en grey really went their own way, which is probably why they ended up being my favorite VK band. Especially when they started going into more experimental metal styles.
For the most part, these days I try not focus much on the copycat factor of music genres and just try to enjoy the sound. Sometimes it leans too heavy on formula to the point where I simply can't enjoy it, but I'll still give everything a chance, at least, to reel me in.

@@JabbyMayoCD Well, I'm not against visuals in concerts and in groups, on the contrary. I’m probably against that particular style, which in Japan was separated into this title genre (I don’t know why), but they have a strange titles there. The same BTs appear everywhere on TV and in print interviews as a pop-group, but what kind of pop group they are is ridiculous. But in the end, if we call all visual stuff visual kei, then Ziggy Stardust is visual kei or Lady Gaga (although Gaga is also a follower of Bowie, much like his followers visual-keiers in Japan). And Bowie was inspired to his visuals from Japanese kabuki (this is all wild hilarious cultural exchange) (well, according to legend, from Alice Cooper too, but this is not certain). But maybe that's why it got accustomed best in Japan хД

That's sadly disparaging of vkei. malice mizer might have been that but looking at the vkbands who got big in the early 2000s they have their thing

@@Sayu277 The question is, what exactly do you consider visual kei to be and what kind of bands do you mean. Many of them, I probably don't even know. Maybe there was something more interesting, not like cloned lolitas, carnival and anime characters?
At the same time, in fact, I quite imagine that it is possible to do all this cool and not stereotyped (guniv tools for example again, and Imai Hisashi dolls of course), but so far there have been few examples. Well, the question of popularity, it is ... not an indicator of quality, for sure. Show me, please.

And in terms of the following reactions - I beg you, anything, just not Dress XD Dress is just a beautiful lyrical old song (which girls love very much and there is a particularly beautiful Sakurai in the MV, and this is something like a pop-hit for a soft start of viewing BT videos (plus the opening for the anime), but that's all), even BT themselves rarely perform it at concerts (and most often they do not perform the songs that they like less) and greatest one is on the DIQ 2019 (even despite the terribly dull sound throughout the concert and its recording). They have tons of other new songs! And there are already many reactions on TH-cam to this song. And for experimental serious things like Mudai and Boy septem - none. Be the first! XDDD
(yeah, I'm a girl too, but people should have brains and a sense of style / concept, and not just squeals about DRESS from the 90s)

Haha, well Dress is probably going to be the next one I do as a few people have requested it, but don't worry, I'll be checking out their other work as well!

@@JabbyMayoCD I knew you would say that!!! and then I regretted that I wrote about it XDDDDD (and this is also popular crap, yes, but maybe it's good - more people will come running here. Really, everyone is going crazy, they made a pop hit for centuries (it's a kinda genius too). By the way, Trinity Blood anime, I generally consider it a weak uninteresting garbage, but many fans came to the fandom from this opening (there is not even an opening, but a cut from the anime). But BT generally has few anime openings. Nishikawa has a lot of them, not BT huh. But it's like a separate genre of music. ( although a ton of mangaka's kind of like their fans and are drawing Sakurai all over the places. I already stopped considering the character similarities to him as a coincidence, seriously. Dark Butler or Lelouch for example. I read a lot of manga with Sakurai as the protagonist, before I even knew that such dude exist in real life (holy shit). this is already a cult type of character in their mind).
You can take MV and some live then, 2000 OLOD (one life one death cut up concert) is truly angst stuff ahah. Older is more simply romantic, but more voice power.
