      Well... She was wrong in how she used it. Ethnicity is a subset of race. The difference is "Latino" is a MIXTURE of races (and ethnicities). Latino is Spanish (Ethnicity) (White race), Native (Ethnicities) (Mongoloid race), and African (Different ethnicities) (Black Race) typically. There really isnt a Latino ethnity or race because they are una mezcla of both. Someone can be white (race) and their ethnicity is Irish for example (furthermore they could be born in the US and their Nationality be American). Its just confusing.

      Since about 2008, American movies and TV have been more male and white. Especially for leading roles and directors.
      Now you want Hollywood to figure out a combination? Hopefully in your lifetime.
      I've been to parts of this country where people can barely handle black, hispanic, and white. They get all confused with an Asian-American - like how exactly to treat them (like a person). And I'm not even talking about hundreds of miles from a city, with no chain franchises and such.

      Kenyan and Dominican are not races or ethnicities. They are nationalities. Your nationality just says what country you were born in. So you can be black, white, Asian, Indian, etc and still come from either one of those countries. So the question is, what ethnicity or race are your parents? The answer will explain why you are dark skinned.

    • @joshua3259
      @joshua3259 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Carolina Espinoza tranquila, mestiza es una persona que es resultado del mestizaje. Que tiene antepasados indígenas, europeos y/o africanos. Es una mezcla de ellos. La mayoría de personas en mi país por ejemplo, somos mestizos. Y la mayoría de latinos también. Pueden tener la piel más oscura o más clara, pero si tienes parte indígena + africana o europea o los tres eres mestiza. Es muy raro que alguien que su familia entera sea de su país ( en Latinoamérica) no sea mestizo, por la colonización y la mezcla de razas.

    Unfortunately the idea of being black to many Dominicans 🇩🇴 is still a thing if denial and frowned upon. It's crazy because we love who we are and look like but can't admit that is partially thanks to our African roots.
    It's has been engraved in our ancestors that Europeans/white skin is superior...we even call kinky hair pelo malo (bad hair) and more manageable hair such as type A,B and C , pelo bueno (good hair) ... And if you go to most Dominican salons and you have "bad hair"... The only hairstyle they give you is the famous "Dominican Blowout" in order to straighten those kinks...
    I find it incredibly weird that still a great amount of Dominicans will deny their African heritage. I mean look at us, the majority of us look like we carry African blood, whether it's a little or it's a lot, we cannot deny it.

    I used to be one that would say, "I'm not Black, I'm Dominican 🇩🇴" and it took until recently to understand that yes, I can be black, too.
    A lot of it actually came from home. I was the darkest in my home, 2nd darkest in my entire family, and when I was a kid, I went to Catholic school with a bunch of light-skinned Hispanics in Hialeah (ya tu sabes). And they would make fun of me for being Black. And when I would bring this to my mom, who was very light, she would make fun of me by calling me "Rubio". So my defense mechanism was to consider myself Dominican.
    But I've come to realize there's nothing wrong with being Afro-Latino. If anything, I've got the best of both worlds: the heritage and the features.
    So if you're ever feeling conflicted based on the color of your skin, remember that your makeup is always a blessing, never a curse.

    Obviously, this is just my personal feeling, but I don't see the need to add my race(s) in front of Latino just because a bunch of idiots don't know the difference between race and ethnicity. I feel like adding afro/indigenous/white/etc in front of Latino is just another way of putting ourselves in separate categories for the idiots who can't fathom a culture having more than one race. I shouldn't have to explain that both the African and European sides of my family are Latino by putting myself into a sub-category. Like... read a history book or something.

It's beautiful & so are you...no matter how you appear. 💖🙏☝

      Jean Román Morel wow! I’ve never had a struggle so clearly stated before. I also am Dominican and Puerto Rican but look “light skinned” however have kinky hair. It’s always been a struggle because I just considered myself Latina, yet I’ve been told all my life by one side “no you’re black”! Then by family “you’re Latina not black.” When I think about it now, I guess I’m really considered “mixed” but never really knew how to identify!

    • @florhernandez1401
      @florhernandez1401 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a lot of Mestizaje in Mexico as well. My family is from a region with a history of African ancestry. This is very evident in their facial features, hair, skin tone etc. I am aware of all that but don’t consider myself Afro Mexicana. I’m ethnically Mexican, Mexico is mestizo, ethnically and racially diverse. We were colonized like many other Spanish speaking countries and throughout the years have had many different immigrant populations mix with the indigenous and already mixed population. Also, I think many times people use the term “Afro Latino” incorrectly. being Afro Latino is not the same as being half Mexican and half African American/black. To me, an “Afro Latino” is someone who is culturally Latino with African ancestry (African Diaspora). While someone who is 1/2 Mexican and 1/2 AA would be considered biracial (even though Mexican is not a race) or bicultural.

    Thank you for making this cuz my mom is Puerto Rican and my dad is Mexican but everyone always says I’m black cuz of my skin color but I was also born in Puerto Rican so thanks for making this❤️

    I had to do an racism poll my English teacher gave me and I was so confused because the first question was:”What race are you” and Latino was in the options🤦🏽‍♀️Only two people chose black or white....and the ones that I asked (The majority my family) were *black*

      That’s a teacher and he/she is not smart enough to understand that Latino is not a race...no wonder our schools are failing
