I think my favorite is Steph from a standpoint of just loving Stephanie Brown and wishing there was more for her as Batgirl. Honestly I love Barbara Gordon, but I like that the Bat-Family sort of levels-up (Nightwing, Red Hood, Red Robin all grew from starting out as Robin and Oracle was like Barbara leveling up as a super-genius team leader) and Barbara going backwards into an old identity seems like a step back; where as for Stephanie her days as Batgirl were a definite upgrade from being constantly shoved out the Bat-Family.

Stephanie Brown is my favourite Batgirl. Her entire run was not just fun, but also watching a rebirth of a character. Knowing her history in the comics, seeing her donning one of the main mantles in the Bat-family, integrating with the other members, and having allies or support outside of her usual circle is refreshing to read. Especially with her entire history being pulled and pushed around (unintentionally, or even the sexist and out of character writing in the older comics) by some of the characters or used as plot device (looking at you War Games and that one particular Red Robin run). The run was like a redemption arc to a character like Steph, who had been through so much, yet had gained too little. And her growth to the brash, vengeful yet well meaning Spoiler who became a vigilante to stop her father by any means, who’s hero career wasn’t truly altruistic at the beginning. Who is now the optimist and hopeful Batgirl, had everything she had ever want and worked for going in her life, who wants to save and protect Gotham. Regardless the things she been through, the relationships she had lost, rekindled, and made, and situations she was unable to control. Rather than being angry and bitter, had only made her more empathetic. Turned her cynical to an idealistic, and becoming more kinder and hopeful in spite all of it. And for me, that was one of the greatest revival of a character, and going through their deserve development and writing after everything. I’m glad to know that she was once a prominent Batgirl with her own series.
Cassandra, my favorite Batgirl. I was sad that they always default to Barbara Gordon for New 52 and Arkham games. For New 52, they start the series with all the Robins around, yet only one Batgirl and taking this long to just mention Stephanie Brown.

Have to say Barbra Gordian is probably one of my favorite superheroes. To me she is actually one of the most grounded and most realistic heroes, even more then Batman. It's a real shame that DC doesn't want to incorporate more members of the Bat Family into their new live action movies. I would watch a Batgirl movie over Wonder Woman any day.

+M Rod What? She's not one-dimensional. If you read her 6 year run, the original batgirl comic, her character has a lot of depth. Slowly learning how to have personal relationships, to speak/read, dealing with her guilt of being raised as an assassin, killing people as a child, etc.
M Rod her solo series has 70+ issues with topics deep of her character that shows her as a funny, friendly character( though her inability to talk due to body language was an obstacle). Many seem to hate her because of what Adam B. did to her in the One Year Later event (thus nearly destroying her character for a decade). Ever since the batfamily fandom mis-characterized her as a quiet, mean, badass Mary Sue. She struggles with fitting in with her body reading ability, depression, and insecurities of her place, but still manages to seem as a strong heroine despite her traumatic background.

It should be mentioned that Barbara was retired as Batgirl before her getting shot. DC allowed her to get shot partly because she wasn't active anymore. Her character was rescued by Ostrander and then Dixon to become arguably a better character, Oracle. In the 90s, there where a few flashback issues which further strenghtened her character by showing her to be a bit inexperienced as Batgirl, rhough very driven and smart. The reintroduction of Batgirl through Cassandra in No Mans Land gave the oportunity to hava a very different heroine, that evolved over time and bomded with Barbara. Its a shame they went back to Barbara being Batgirl, because even though she's a great character, it negates a large part of this great evolution. Also, just like with the Robins, instead of evolving from one character to the next, we get all of the characters coexisting under different names, which needlessly crowds the stories and confuses new readers.

I liked how you touch upon Betty Kane. Yes, she was the first to be called Bat-Girl but was forgotten about once Barbara Gordon came into the scene. Although I prefer and love Batgirl aka Babs, I'm glad that Bette was reintroduced as Flamebird. Pretty clever of George Perez to give her THAT name because of her connection to Dick Grayson and the reason why Betty Kane was created in the first place( as a female version of Robin & to dispel those gay rumors between Bruce & Dick in the late 40s & 1950s). I noticed that after Bette/Flamebird's introduction, none of the DC writers never did a story where Babs meets Bette. I always wanted to see a storyline where Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon & Flamebird team up and Bette tells Babs that she too was a Bat-Girl. Now that would've been a great story.

I liked how you touch upon Betty Kane. Yes, she was the first to be called Bat-Girl but was forgotten about once Barbara Gordon came into the scene. Although I prefer and love Batgirl aka Babs, I'm glad that Bette was reintroduced as Flamebird. Pretty clever of George Perez to give her THAT name because of her connection to Dick Grayson and the reason why Betty Kane was created in the first place( as a female version of Robin & to dispel those gay rumors between Bruce & Dick in the late 40s & 1950s). I noticed that after Bette/Flamebird's introduction, none of the DC writers never did a story where Babs meets Bette. I always wanted to see a storyline where Batgirl aka Barbara Gordon & Flamebird team up and Bette tells Babs that she too was a Bat-Girl. Now that would've been a great story.
I miss Cassandra Cain/Wayne. I also miss Oracle.
