Omg, I am learning Dutch on Duolingo. I know it isnt the best way to learn, but thank God for Google and TH-cam. They started throwing the verb "to read" or "lezen" at me, and never explained how they were different between the I, You, She/He/It, We, You all, and They. I wanted to cry cause I kept getting it wrong and didn't know why. 😭 It started making me think German was easier for a second.

You might find the verb HAVE of English used in several different context as well dear, Nothing so special about Dutch All languages do that except the ancient ones like Sanskrit Arabic Irish etc They are lot purist and use one verb strictly for one concept and they are right about their conjugations too and trere can be 40 of them Even Spanish has some 20 ways to alter a verb. You are pretty lucky with Dutch here. Even its cousin German gives you rough time with conjugation and they do it strictly too;

Actually, compared to *many* other languages: The rules in Dutch are very clear and not that hard to learn. As I read there are only a few verbs (according to my grammar only 12!) that do not follow the rules in *present tense* - in past tense it's different. Compared to other languages I speak, like Italian and French, where every person got its own conjugation and there are different types of it with hundreds of exceptions, Dutch is super regular once you know the rules with orthography depending on sillables ...
As a Spanish speaker who has studied French, I really agree with this comment. Compared to French, learning this is a breeze - it is so much more predictable, and it actually makes sense!

And one more observation! at 11:20 when you start to pronounce short and long vowels, you pronounce long e as [e:] but long o as o:u (with a subtle "u" added at the end). I hear that Dutch people pronounce ee also as a diphthong, with a subtle "i" at the end [e:i]. Is it dependant on something that you either use long vowel or "dipthongise" it?

@@learndutchwithkim Spanish may be hard coz it has 5 or 6 inflections Arabic has 10 Mandarin does not infliect verbs at all. Korean inflects on for the past and future tense not gender or number like Arabic and some other Middle Eastern languages. Spanish is spoken by more people than even English so give it a shot Kim. I can help you. I am fluent.

In het Tsjechisch ondescheiden ze stemhebbend van stemloos. Deed me debken aan de vervoegingen van de stam: van het infinitief blijven in ik: blijv en dat we dat wijzigen in ik blijf... waarbij de v in een f veranderd. To be honest, in my opinion the vowels spelling would be better explain by using the syllables. There are two types of syllables: open and closed. The open ones end in a vowel and the closed ones end in a consonant. For example Studeren -> stu-de-ren Vinden -> vin-den Mannen -> man-nen The `stu` end `de` syllables are open and the `ren` syllable is closed. In Dutch the distinction between short and long vowels are shown through openness and closeness of a syllable. If a syllable is closed, then the long vowel should be written pak [pak] but paak [pa:k] If a syllable is open, then the vowel is long (Dutch phonological feature): dagen [da:xən] This was made to reduce the amount of letters to write since if every open syllable has a long vowel in it why bothering writing some extra letters? That also explains this phenomenon: maan (enkelvoud) -> manen (meervoud) the word `maan` has the long ā vowel. And there are two of them written because the syllable ends in a consonant. But in the plural there is only one a because it is now the open syllable manen ma-nen And since in Dutch open vowels are long we don't need to write maanen because it's unnecessary. In case of man turning into mannen there is a similar situation. The word man has the short vowel. We see it because it ends in a consonant and there is only one vowel sound. But if we just add the -en ending we will get manen. It turns the word to be read like this ma-nen and as a result making the first syllable open and long. We have to write mannen so that we can keep the syllable closed and it will be read in this way man-nen preserving the original short sound. This may sound too difficult but it would be easier to understand with a lot of practice. This is a better way to look at the spelling because it's general and it applies to every word in Dutch, not only the verbs.

Fantastic video, but I don't understand one thing: why do you pronounce leuk as diphthong? In dictionary of standard Dutch you pronounce it as lök (in German spelling) or [løk] in IPA. Soo is that some variant of Dutch? Do you speak with an accent ?
I don't know why I pronounce it like that, haha. I don't have a specific strong accent (although some here disagree, hahaha) but everyone always has a bit of an accent and apparently this is a characteristic of mine :)
Hi Kim, I stuck on 1 grammar point. studeren (to study) and veranderen (to change) (Present Tense) 1st person singular: studeer, verander But both the verbs came from the same pattern conjugation rule So as per the rule, veranderen should be verandeer but on the internet, it shows verander Why? How do you decide whether to pronounce the final -n in the infinitive form? I have tried to see a pattern (elision before a vowel perhaps, or after a double consonant maybe) but have failed. Maybe there is enough material in this for a whole video as Dutch pronunciation seems generally straightforward except for that final -n!! I find your videos really helpful especially to fill in the gaps that grammar books cannot deal with (like pronunciation!) and to consolidate what I think I already know (but very often don't :)

Well, actually most of us never really pronounce the final N whenever it follows a “swja”, which is most of the time the “e” in front of the N in infinitives or plural nouns. . We kind of swallow them. There are some dialects that they DO however, and they then swallow the sjwa.. but in my videos I speak so clearly, I probably pronounce the N at the end of infinitives and plurals more often then I do when I talk to my friends :)

What about Paard and Schaap. In the plural form they become Paarden and Schapen. How come one loses the two "a" and the other doesn't? I found that weird when studying, but I guess it's an exception

Yes you're right about that it's very easy compared to other languages! I always struggle with Spanish and all their different conjugations!

In het Tsjechisch ondescheiden ze stemhebbend van stemloos. Deed me debken aan de vervoegingen van de stam: van het infinitief blijven in ik: blijv en dat we dat wijzigen in ik blijf... waarbij de v in een f veranderd. Weet je dat ik me verbaas over het feit dat ik die grammaticale regels NOOIT heb geleerd op school? Ik heb als kind Nederlands geleerd vanaf dat ik een baby was. To be honest, in my opinion the vowels spelling would be better explain by using the syllables.
There are two types of syllables: open and closed. The open ones end in a vowel and the closed ones end in a consonant. For example
Studeren -> stu-de-ren
Vinden -> vin-den
Mannen -> man-nen
The `stu` end `de` syllables are open and the `ren` syllable is closed.
In Dutch the distinction between short and long vowels are shown through openness and closeness of a syllable.
If a syllable is closed, then the long vowel should be written
pak [pak] but paak [pa:k]
If a syllable is open, then the vowel is long (Dutch phonological feature):
dagen [da:xən]
This was made to reduce the amount of letters to write since if every open syllable has a long vowel in it why bothering writing some extra letters?
That also explains this phenomenon:
maan (enkelvoud) -> manen (meervoud)
the word `maan` has the long ā vowel. And there are two of them written because the syllable ends in a consonant. But in the plural there is only one a because it is now the open syllable
manen ma-nen
And since in Dutch open vowels are long we don't need to write maanen because it's unnecessary.
In case of man turning into mannen there is a similar situation. The word man has the short vowel. We see it because it ends in a consonant and there is only one vowel sound. But if we just add the -en ending we will get manen. It turns the word to be read like this ma-nen and as a result making the first syllable open and long. We have to write mannen so that we can keep the syllable closed and it will be read in this way man-nen preserving the original short sound.
This may sound too difficult but it would be easier to understand with a lot of practice. This is a better way to look at the spelling because it's general and it applies to every word in Dutch, not only the verbs.

Fantastic video, but I don't understand one thing: why do you pronounce leuk as diphthong? In dictionary of standard Dutch you pronounce it as lök (in German spelling) or [løk] in IPA. Soo is that some variant of Dutch? Do you speak with an accent ?
I don't know why I pronounce it like that, haha. I don't have a specific strong accent (although some here disagree, hahaha) but everyone always has a bit of an accent and apparently this is a characteristic of mine :)
Hi Kim, I stuck on 1 grammar point. studeren (to study) and veranderen (to change)
(Present Tense) 1st person singular: studeer, verander
But both the verbs came from the same pattern conjugation rule
So as per the rule, veranderen should be verandeer
but on the internet, it shows verander
Why? Why it is not conjugated like studeer?
(Few more examples like this: donderen, bedonderen)

How do you decide whether to pronounce the final -n in the infinitive form? I have tried to see a pattern (elision before a vowel perhaps, or after a double consonant maybe) but have failed. Maybe there is enough material in this for a whole video as Dutch pronunciation seems generally straightforward except for that final -n!!
I find your videos really helpful especially to fill in the gaps that grammar books cannot deal with (like pronunciation!) and to consolidate what I think I already know (but very often don't :)

Well, actually most of us never really pronounce the final N whenever it follows a “swja”, which is most of the time the “e” in front of the N in infinitives or plural nouns. . We kind of swallow them. There are some dialects that they DO however, and they then swallow the sjwa.. but in my videos I speak so clearly, I probably pronounce the N at the end of infinitives and plurals more often then I do when I talk to my friends :)

What about Paard and Schaap. In the plural form they become Paarden and Schapen. How come one loses the two "a" and the other doesn't? I found that weird when studying, but I guess it's an exception
With Paard, we have "rd" behind the "aa", so it doesn't change. It only changes when we only have 1 consonant behind the "aa", such as in "schaap" :)

As far as I know the 5 dollars will be billed the first of April.. because I always see at the first of the new month who has been billed and who hasn’t. I am also someone’s patron and I always get billed the first of the month :) if you want to be 100% sure, you can start at the first of April, then you will be billed the next month (1st of May).
