    Your point about immigrants not having the same resources to heal from traumatic experiences is very important and especially true for immigrant farm workers in Half Moon Bay, my hometown. Half Moon Bay farm workers are paid well below minimum wage, live on the property they work on, and aren't even given enough time off to go to the doctor. Most of them do not have cars and the bus system in our rural city is atrocious. It is a situation comparable to indentured servitude. The incident that caused this shooting was a supervisor demanding the suspect, who lived off $9 an hour in one of the most expensive areas in the state, pay $100 for a minor workplace accident. This type of financial abuse may be fairly common given what we know about the industry. People are housed in crowded shipping containers and barns and charities have had to rise to the occasion to bus medical services to them. HR services and community transparency are non-existent. The silver lining in this horrible loss of life is that authorities are finally looking into the working conditions at these farms. I hope sometime soon there will be a way for Half Moon Bay residents to report other criminal businesses we know of without getting possibly undocumented employees deported.

    7:20 David, you're wrong about the news intentionally being there to film the takedown of the suspect. I'm in the Bay Area and was following the news. What happened was there was supposed to be a press conference at the San Mateo County Sherriff's substation in Half Moon Bay to update the situation, so all the news media started gathering there. Nobody, including the police, expected the suspect would show up at the police station to turn himself in. They all thought he was on the run. Luckily, one officer there noticed the vehicle that matched the witness description was parked right outside so they ordered him out and took him into custody. Since the media just coincidentally happened to be nearby, they started filming obviously. The guy was in the car calling his wife and basically saying I love you, good-bye because he knew he was going to prison for life or about to take his own life.

    thanks for this discussion guys. you two are an asset to the asian american community for real. i havent been able to follow these stories closely because ive been busy with work, so thanks for this little summation and your thoughts.
    i am really fearful for the elderly asian/asian american community because there are probably a lot of them that are feeling destitute and left behind (and you make a fantastic point about them not being able to take advantage of the social outreach and support programs because either they dont know they exist or cant do it because of language or culture etc) and also the elderly Asians in general because I'm sure they will face some backlash from racist idiots and attacks on the streets will see a bump up. This is the first generation where a lot the elderly have internet, social media and cell phones so i can only imagine the culture shock they experience and the high possibility becoming further ostracized from society or made to feel like life has passed them by. it really makes me sad to think about it. i think its only going to get worse before it gets better.

    The Half Moon Bay Mushroom farm suspect Chunli Zhao - had worked for the Half Moon Bay farm before the shooting. The Star Dance Studio suspect Tran was a former dance instructor there. The two shootings do not appear to be linked criminally. Sociologically, many older Asian immigrant men find life in American difficult socially and economically (beyond any hate crime and racial discrimination factors) such that a before the Pandemic good number of them do not stay in America. However, pandemic travel restrictions may make returning back to Asia from American more difficult now. These suspects appear to be isolated and I do not see any evidence that there is an NRA or government agency influencing either suspect.

    It is important to continue having these difficult conversations. I am an immigrant, read, speak, and write fluent Chinese (Mandarin and Taiwanese), and grew-up in the 626. What I have seen are some broken promises, isolation, and loneliness for many of older Chinese men. Especially those who have flew here, in search of better opportunities, only to be faced with rejection and isolation not only from the mainstream society due to language barrier, institutional racism, and even rejection within our own community. This is too much to handle for anyone! There need to be awareness and acknowledgement of our struggles as immigrants and find common grounds. When I go shopping at the Asian groceries or some of the herbal shops, I make a point to smile and nod at the elders. It's amazing to see their faces light-up from being acknowledged. They have stories to share with all of us. It is up to ALL of us to listen and take in their lessons! Again, THANK YOU for having this difficult conversation! Let's dim sum with our elders!!!

    I was not expecting the Year of the Rabbit to be the year Asian elders strike back. I know this is a case of workplace violence because they said Zhao was a disgruntled worker, but it does feel like a copycat murder too. Maybe he saw what happened in Monterey Park with a 72-year-old mass shooter, and thought "hey, that's a good idea, I can do that too to solve this problem since I have a gun."

  • @PricefieldPunk
    @PricefieldPunk ปีที่แล้ว +17

    These werent random mass shootings too. In both cases both shooters weren't targeting random people. They were going after people who they deemed had "Wronged" them in some way. Everyone needs to be aware of how you talk or make other people around you feel. I know in Asian culture usually elders will praise someone thats successful and they dont realize if you constantly praising someone it makes people around you feel more inadequate and feel like a failure. Im not saying thats what happened here but its just an example that really hurts someones mental health and you dont even know it.

      No that is way too convoluted a way to live. It's basically just walking on eggshells. I'm not a "everyone is too sensitive now" person I think we should all be respectful of each other, AND know how to handle situations when we feel we have been wronged. Now let's say these men did feel wronged...then they should have communicated with whoever that they had this issue! Human interactions are a 2 way street. Like the guys are saying this is not done in the Asian community and well this is a result...so the question is how do we treat this problem so the answer isn't shoot someone who wronged not let's just always be afraid to like have real human interactions.

    FACT: The Half Moon Bay shooter has a history of violence with a restraining order place upon him for threatening to kill his roommate. So this is a case of another unstable anti-social disordered individual. Just like the mentally disordered road rage attacker who was driving a Tesla. Let's not make it into a "linked to" false labeling. Tesla owners aren't violent because of that case, and this shooter had a streak of aggression and violence. So if he can access a gun, chances are high he will act out his violent tendencies. It's a failure on the government for not having this person flagged on a database to alert gun dealers.

    I said it before and I'll say it again: it's not that surprising that it was an older Asian male. This particular demographic probably has it at the very worst right now in America. Asian males have always been devalued in Western Society and when you throw in no wife, no children, and old age, it pretty much makes them worthless in the eyes of western society. I can't think of a particular demographic more ostracized and excluded in Western society than this. These old asian males obviously did this because they had nothing to lose & wanted others to feel their pain. Not saying that was rightful justification, but more into the psychotic reasoning for why they did what they did.

Rarely though do I hear about how men and women both have equal access to guns but at least 90% of mass shootings are caused by men. I think we need to speak more about healthy masculinity. I really wonder what things would be like if we cultivated a culture and society that provided space and encouraged healthy masculinity. If less people were lonely and had less deterents to getting help.

    You can’t attribute mental health issues as the cause to these mass shootings. I am not trying to dismiss the effects of mental health issues but it’s getting to a point that people who are trying to avoid gun control discourse use this as a scapegoat. The US doesn’t have a monopoly on mental health issues because other developed countries experience mental health issues but don’t result to rampant gun violence. Gun control has to take place because other people who say there is no need either are lying to you or economically benefit from these gun sales like the NRA or gun manufacturers. And whenever legislation that proposes mental health resources appears, those same people who credit mental health as the cause but only to avoid gun control, are the same ones who Vote it down

    • @unknownstrikex
      @unknownstrikex ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The problem is gun control is #1, isn't implemented on a wide enough scale, and #2, targets the wrong areas. The Monterey Park shooter in this case used an illegal weapon, with an illegal magazine, and an illegal homemade suppressor. The sheer amount of weapons in America still allows for these individuals to obtain them even if they are banned. The Buffalo Shooter brought 30 round magazines that are illegal in NY by going across state lines to PA. There are too many guns in general, and too many states without the same gun laws to use as a loophole.
      On the legal side, the Half Moon Bay shooter had restraining orders filed against him and threatened to kill his roommate before. Yet, he was still able to purchase a semi-automatic pistol that was used in the mass shootings. Gun control also needs to address how we can more effectively prevent disturbed people from legally obtaining firearms. In my opinion, the minimum we should be doing is treating guns the same way that we treat cars. If you want to own a gun, you should have to pass a background check, a written test on the laws regarding that firearm, and a shooting test to ensure that you can safely operate it whether it be for self defense, recreational shooting, or for hunting. Signs of violence and disturbed behavior will result in the weapon being confiscated, and those with histories of mental illness + violent outbursts should be barred from purchasing one entirely.

      you can’t? or you won’t?
      stop trying to frame this arguement so you’re right. if you want an honest picture deal with just the facts and leave your feelings out of this analysis.
      i think it’s a deflection to make this about guns when it is a mental health issue. why do people dismiss the drama that’s going on in peoples lives to blame shooters or the laws in place. i get it, the government makes the laws and those in service are expected to be of service. but if you don’t consider this a mental health issue, what do you consider divorces and what happens to most families? you don’t think they have mental health issues?
      seriously, people constantly cherry pick to try to be righteous but your pretenses are all wrong when you preface your analysis by saying ‘you can’t blame mass shootings on mental health’ when you didn’t even consider why these people did what they did and that it’s not normal for a health minded contributing member of society to go and end the lives of people unrelated to them in physical life ending danger.
      people who want to win an arguement and dismiss others because they don’t agree with it are the problem because they practice closed minded living

Anything like bolt action rifles or pump action shotguns, single/double barreled or anything else like that is fine with me.
    Biggest issue we face with gun control is that each state implements their own gun laws, where it should be on the federal level because nobody is stopping someone from legally buying a gun in one state and bringing it into another.

It’s more about societies crumbing about, politicians not being prosecuted for corruption, those who have power/wealth becoming more powerful and implanting major change in a whim, and talks/negotiations/agendas being done behind closed doors. So it’s actually a natural phenomenon. More and people are wondering what the hell is going on. And losing faith in our system.

We all know what happened in Epstein Island and there's a list of people that went to that Island (mostly your super rich and politicians) to have sex with underage kids. Why aren't we talking about that list anymore? I think we live in a system of unjust and these what you called conspiracy theorists are merely trying to expose the truth so maybe the world will get a break from these corruptions.

It seems there is worker abuse and underpayment for the entire time. What do we do with isolated workers with no help or ways to hold employers accountable? Even though it doesn’t excuse these actions. What resources can we provide to these workers ? We all know new immigrants can get stuck in cycles of abuse and poverty,

Some of our leadership is even pretending it was not so. Hell, it was set up by many in our leadership without consequences. I think that is a great point - so many people have no one to connect to and they are alone. Something as simple as a smile and offering a meal could make all the difference. Countries that make it a priority to care about mental illness should be inspiring to other countries. I have strong opinions about gun control - there should be absolutely no reason for a civilian to own an automatic weapon that is only meant to kill large numbers of people - no reason. Or any person really. As for Asians being less involved in mass shootings - I know that some Asian culture has a great deal of pressure involved with work and home life. Perhaps with these recent shootings these elderly men felt helpless, angry, alone and it just became a rage that they couldn't control. So sad for those lost, and hurt. I don't care about the politics - take care of the mentally ill, look at solutions for poverty and care for the elderly, and realize that gun control can make a huge difference in saving lives.

    I’m not saying anything original by pointing out that America is built on the idea of self reliance. We can all wish to live in a safe and civilized society, but when the reality that we’re all faced with says otherwise, we have no choice but to rely on ourselves. The police cannot be everywhere and the minutes it takes for them to arrive is more than enough for an attacker to kill scores of people. A competent shooter can switch magazine in under 3 seconds and continue shooting so restricting magazine capacity isn’t a realistic solution and the US Supreme Court looks to have it struck down anyway.
    We should all understand that being peaceful doesn’t mean being harmless. And being prepared to defend ourselves and our loved ones is a responsibility that we cannot avoid. Wishing to live in peace in a civilized country is something we should all strive for and that includes doing our part to be self reliant. By definition, people with criminal intent will ignore any law that gets in their way. So passing more laws that will be ignored by criminals seems delusional to me. Anyway, we should all go figure out the right path for ourselves on how to be self reliant, because that is the reality in America.

You see everybody what happens ESPECIALLY HERE IN AMERICA, THIS IS THE MOST TRAGIC THING ABOUT THIS COUNTRY, AND THAT IS THE WAY THAT THE LAW KEEP SLOWLY ALLOWING WHAT USED TO BE ILLEGAL TO BECOME LEGAL, AND THAT IS WHY THESE TRAGEDIES CONTINUE TO HAPPEN. THE MORE THAT THE GOVERNMENT ALLOWS EVERYDAY PEOPLE TO HAVE MORE AND MORE CONTROL OVER WHAT THEY BUY AND SELL OR CONSUMED AND SMOKE, THE MORE CHAOS WILL OCCUR.
