    If you put the carboy cap on the lower carboy you can use a vacuum to start the siphon (suck don't blow).

    I've been a big fan of the fill the tube with sanitizer and dump the first bit into a pot or something. But I like the blow in the top one since it should be pretty easy to extend to a bottling wand solo adventure.

    Another way you can start a plain siphon via suction without using your mouth or a turkey baster is with a 50-60 ml plastic (needleless) syringe. They are also useful for small liquid measurements and transportation.
    Also if you don't want to stir your brew much with the auto syphon (not that it's really that big of a problem) you can put in the outer tube in first without the inner tube. Then when the outer tube fills up drive in the inner tube and in one pump you can start the syphon.

    You can use those caps without a wand by just shoving the hose through it, but getting the hose to go where you want it to go is a bit of an exercise in patience or futility . Technically most of those methods could be done without a wand, with the same frustration requirement.
    On a related note. The most common failure points on an auto-siphon is the rubber gasket on the wand or the cracked outer pipe. In either of those cases, you get a free racking wand from the carcass of the bad auto-siphon :)

    • @DointheMost
      @DointheMost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After like a month of use, my one-gallon sized auto-siphon suddenly cracked right down the side. Like, what? I used to use plastic racking canes wayyyy back in the day, but after replacing my third one I switched to stainless steel. So much nicer! Anna's dad says he may have a stainless steel bottling wand somewhere. I need to get my hands on that.

    I've used the carboy cap before (use it mostly for blow off though) but add a filter onto the tube you blow into to avoid maybe adding "spit" into the brew thereby preventing potential contamination, etc. I found this method looking at some beer brewing videos and written "how-to" guides. I've been tempted to tell you about it but everyone has their preferred method and use that more frequently than any other because that's what one is used to. Enjoyed the video and hadn't heard of the sanitizer in the tube method so learned something new!!

      Just don't run it with any particulate in suspension, just as the instruction book says. Cheers!

    • @ArrowtotheMead
      @ArrowtotheMead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@DointheMost I think that's where the pre-filter helps out! I mean yeah, you're still supposed to run it without particulate regardless, but it's an extra layer of safety if you missed a little baby oak chip or something.
      Either way skipping the pads completely just for easy racking is bloody genius, I might have to try it since my auto siphon just broke haha

    What’s been your preferred method of cleaning the tubing out after? I’ve always struggled with getting it clean, particularly if I’m racking off a primary and there’s a lot of sediment or other particles going through the tube

    • @DointheMost
      @DointheMost  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I rinse immediately. If there’s stubborn stuff I soak in Oxyclean. I also have very long pipe cleaners I can use to scrub them. All that said, I replace my tubing probably 3-4 times a year.

    Tube connection question, to size should you match inner diameter, go for fit, and material?
    (My current setup is auto-syphon and a combination of bamboo and ductape, and looking to upgrade.)

    • @GreenWitch1
      @GreenWitch1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Any syphon hose from a home brew store should fit.

    • @DointheMost
      @DointheMost  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed with Michele! Your local homebrew shop should have the right size. Should be as simple as measuring and matching the OD of your siphon to the ID of your tubing.

    • @johnburke8337
      @johnburke8337 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      In addition to what these guys have said, you'll probably have to run hot water over the tubing before it'll go onto the racking cane easily. It becomes more pliable when warmed up

  • @1014p

    Step one: Dont try to use a well used siphon for some 30 or so brews. Plastic will probably break. Just happened today, but did not put into bottle fortunately.

    Instead of the orange cap, you can use a wet towel and 2 pieces of tubing. The wet towel creates an airtight seal, then you can blow on the other piece of tubing to start the siphon.
