I just finished this book and I'm in awe. I annotated it to filth, I don't think I could narrow down top quotes. The footnotes were so impactful and loved the extra layer that they're "only" a footnote in someone else's story.

I just finished this masterpiece of a book and I absolutely love your breakdown of it. Put everything beautifully into words.
Chain Gang All Stars is unlike anything Ive ever read before and it feels like a truly important and unique book.

I know this is an old video, but I just finished reading Chain-Gang All Stars, and I think I’ll be in a book hangover for awhile-I wish I had someone IRL to discuss it with, so next best thing is coming here. I like how you likened the footnotes to headstones. Such a powerful, moving, thought-provoking book. I’ll definitely be seeking out his other works.

It's gonna be a while before I get to borrow a copy from the library, so in the meantime I'm gonna check out Friday Black. :)

I needed to catch my mental breath after this reading. I loved it and in the same breath felt guilty for the indulgence. I found the footnotes to be a wonderful inclusion like sobering doses of reality like air in the midst of surrendering to the deep dark of the story. Un-put-down-able
    ❤❤❤

I watch every single video you make because i love supporting my friend. But naturally, not all the books sound appealing to my particular tastes.
THIS sounds like it was made for me, however. Practically salivating to read it now!

Read this book not too long ago and though I'm happy you had a good time I personally find the frequent comparisons to "The Handmaid's Tale" greatly exaggerated. I found that this book's pacing was off with the intermitting perspective chapters and that it was overfilled with a cast of characters plagued with poor or uninteresting characterization. I think a lot of threads kind of went nowhere and the ending was deeply unsatisfying in every sense. I did however really enjoy the conversations that were had, even though I think they could've been more deeply explored, and the absolute best part of this book to me were the footnotes.
I say all this to ultimately ask you if you still think Friday Black is worth the read for someone like me who had these issues with CGAS?

@@WillowTalksBooks Thanks a lot! I’ll give it a go then I think, really enjoy your takes and I hadn’t seen that you had done a review on this one until now. I’ve felt like everyone seemed to enjoy it apart from me but Good to know I might have better luck with his other work.

Thank you for the fantastic review. I loved Friday Black, but the last story 'Through the Flash' was too much for me. Although it was brilliant, the idea fascinating, I just couldn't handle the detail of the torture description. Would you mind telling me if you consider the torture description in this novel the same level or is it more like the other short stories in Friday Black?

Not really sure. Everyone’s tolerance level is different. I wasn’t bothered by anything in this book but you might be 🤷🏻‍♀️

The movie Running Man did this idea in the 80s. Definitely not a new idea.
