Your lessons and concepts are really well-conceived and i'm sure they took you awhile to pen down all the different thought patterns and lesson so i'm grateful that you are sharing all this with us! Another awesome lesson. I was looking up Dana on some videos and I noticed something. I've seen a few 'gospel' style drummers like him, Larnell Lewis, Sput Seawright, and they all seem to have this trend of holding the stick waaaaay near the end, like the pivot point is so far to the back that the butt of the stick is IN their closed hand, and none extends out the back. Pretty far from the balance point for sure, I don't know if they change how much the stick is choked up for different things or whatever, but I found this odd. You ever notice this Nate?
Carter Mahnke hA - great idea for a video. The short answer is this Surface Adaptive technique thing I cover in Faster Hands, where your grip changes depending on the surface, and that at high volume levels and on low-rebound surfaces like a floor tom (let alone going back and forth from a tom to closed hats, let alone interspersing rim shots), a classic fulcrum at the stick's center of gravity is unnecessary and will actually get in the way. The longer answer is "it kinda undermines all that 'right way to hold the stick' crap we learned with the practice pad, doesn't it;)"
