Prince William and Prince Harry were pictured standing shoulder-to-shoulder before revealing a statue created in Princess Diana's honour by Ian Rank-Broadley and placed in the remodelled Sunken Garden of Kensington Palace, a place of solace and safety for her before she died in 1997.
They put their personal animosity to one side this afternoon at the private ceremony, which started at 2pm, and saw Diana's sons gather along with the princess' siblings The Earl Spencer, The Lady Sarah McCorquodale, and The Lady Jane Fellowes, in addition to the Statue Committee, the sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley, garden designer Pip Morrison and Chair of Historic Royal Palaces, Rupert Gavin. Hundreds of mourners gathered outside from dawn with Diana's fans travelling from all over the UK to west London for the poignant commemorative event today, with Harry arriving at 1.45pm - just 15 minutes before the grand unveiling. The brothers, who have been split by Harry's decision to leave the UK, were seen chatting in the grounds of Kensington Palace moments before the grand unveiling.

Prince William's body language and gestures touched me deeply. The way he he unveiled it and took the moment to reflect, brought me to tears. He couldn't look away for a moment and there he stood, just looking proud at the statue of his mother. You could see it though his body the way he was absorbing, the language in the way he stood. The time he took speaking to the artist, as well as to others- so respectful, sincere. The blood of a King truly runs through him, I am just in awe.
I agree. He was poised the entire time. He's a very classy prince. Harry's bouncing around and fidgeting was made very obvious in comparison. Like, stand still man! Lol

I personally think it too dark and never showed how beautiful Diana really was , I think it would have been a lot better in a lovely marble , but that is only my opinion.

Bronze is chosen for outdoors because of the weathering.

Wow. This statue is such a dreadfully masculine,gloomy,dark,clumsy,unfashionsble,heavy rendering, an un-likeness of the gentle spirit of the beautiful,graceful,lovely,elegant Lady Diana. How sad they couldnt have found a more appropriate sculptor's style to depict the princess's likeness, more true to her spirit we all remember.

It scaries me a little bit because the statue (especially children and gesture of the girl) reminds me of one statue in the USA that I can't evem mention as it's...horrible and true dreadfully DARK. I hope I'm mistaken and it's just a coincidence.

Whats’s missing is her “lightness of being” her beautiful smile and her humor which seemed to be there to assuage the worst of times. She was never dull and this statue seems dull. I think her sons wanted to celebrate her sense of purpose and dedication to those less fortunate, it does that I think, unfortunately at the expense of other qualities which made her a mesmerizing and endearing person.

The statute doesn't look like Diana, with two or three children that are not really necessary to be there. Hopefully, there'll be the second and better statue.

This wasn't a state occasion, it was supposed to be a family affair, but it didn't look all that enjoyable.
I understand from other readings that it was so minimal because harry refused to share his speech ahead of time as he was supposed to!!! So it was decided no speeches at all!! William has to keep stepping back to please harry!! No uniforms at funeral because harry threw a tantrum that he couldnt wear his!! Obviously the statute is a representation of her love for children and it’s a wonderful tribute. I think her dress shows her down to earth relatable nature to people. The color of the statue is throwing everything off.

Something light, bright…a youthful Diana in “motion”!! I expected to see her dancing the ballet or similar. This is not what we expected at all…looks like something Snarkles would have come up with. I am happy to see the 3 children because we’re reminded of the Cambridge kids, George, Charlotte & Louie…w their Granny.

She's too chunky, Diana was more slender than that.
The sculptor's work has predominantly been male portraits and full-body depictions of males -- if you take a look at his website you will see this. He is much less experienced at doing statues of women, which may account for the somewhat masculine look of Diana's statue which many are commenting on.

I give kudos to William for his ability to have what was seemingly the same conversation over and over again with the same level of interest and enthusiasm. For people who say the royals never do anything, I suggest they try to have that kind of conversation that was probably rather boring multiple times and not seeming like you'd rather be anywhere else. That's a talent in patience I could never possess.

I knew they were going to screw it up. How hard was this, really? Either do the bench picture, or one of her alone, lifesize, walking and smiling, with some beauty in it. We have statues of famous people here, that folks can just walk up to like the person is there. Got one of Matt Dillon, one of Johnny Mercer in Savannah, any of those sculpturers would have done better. Ghastly is too kind.

Well, to be fair, there were times she got a bit broader, not the time period she wore that outfit tho. I feel like when ppl die they should get to be "forever young". But the boys obviously wanted a motherly looking, strong looking bigger than life women statue to represent their mom. I wish the Chd had been them is all.

Thank you for saying this . we need to understand that this is who they remember their mother as. The mom who took them to swimming. who took them to roller Coaster rides. who they saw crying and she gave them comfort as well as them comforting her. They don't remember her as this big beautiful popular person. They were little enough that this was her mom. And all you bozo's out there throwing shade at the statue. That moment in time is who they remember her for. Not her diamonds and fancy dress. It did her Justice for these children who remembered their mother as loving and kind. Give it up already. Try seeing it from their perspective. Besides, they are the ones who had the final say in the statue, no one else.

So many of you are missing the point of the way the sculptor portrayed Diana, and the truth of the matter is, Diana was a woman of pure strength and her strength was her love for people. So many are criticizing the way Diana was rendered, but the sculptor was trying to capture the strength within Diana through the chiseled features and the plain outfit he chose her to wear. Diana was above the superficial things of royal life. Sure, she knew how to dress up, and BOY was she beautiful, but even in plain clothes her beauty shown through! This sculpture is about her LOVE for others, especially children. Her concern was for other's to be comfortable. A true mark of a lady, which Diana was. She is the People's Princess and always will be! Someday when it's my time to go, I shall wish for her to be one of those beautiful souls that meets me to bring me into Heaven. I watched her from a little girl of 7 and I shall never forget her.
Try and look at this sculpture again with her strength in love in mind and not the superficial. 💙

Horrible statue. Such a manly, stout rendering of a gorgeous woman. AND why the stern expression? Why not make the children William and Harry? At least the garden is beautiful.

I find this statue very much on point. I don't think Princess Diana would have wanted to be remembered for her beauty but for her heart and work (children, safe in her embrace). This statue directs my thoughts to her personality and work for better world.
She was an is the People's princess. We will never ever forget her. It was touching to not only see her sons there but, her brother and two sisters as well. Diana will forever be in our hearts.
Do they all just pretend to talk or do they actually have things to chitchat about? I notice William talks to one person until Harry’s turn, then he goes on to the next. I can’t imagine having to think of things to say to a dozen different people a dozen different times.

Not a fan of the statue, it has not captured Diana’s beaming smile or beautiful eyes. Not sure about the little one hiding behind her. Why were those awful clothes chosen, a lovely softly falling summer dress would have been better however at the end of the day she is the boy’s Mum & if they are happy with the statue it is all that matters. William looked so well put together & so refined, not sure what Harry was trying to achieve, brown shoes, unbuttoned jacket, unruly hair & beard & that hands on hips defiant stance.

I really don't like the short trousers on the little boy. When I first saw it I wondered why they'd depicted a Victorian child. Those trousers need to be shorter to resemble a modern kid, or be full length trousers. Such a weird length! 🤷

Some of us are royal watchers but I would not consider myself an expert. I know a lot because I’ve studied it but I will always defer to the Brits when it comes to knowledge of the royal Family. I have lots of ancestry in the British Isles so it’s always been of great interest too me. My grandmother was born in Great Yarmouth in1880 and named after Queen Victoria

No one in future will ever know whose kids these are. The whole unnatural composition looks empty and meaningless in a sad grey not suiting to one peace of the Kensington Park. Diana would have deserved a better piece of art.

Ah yes....the plight of people with curly hair is well documented. The mental calculation that goes into finding just the right frizz-ease shampoo. The trials and tribulations of deep conditioning. The skills needed to wield the wide-toothed comb. The time wasted using the diffuser and the ever-real threat of a burn from a slip of the straighteners. I am so glad there is a boy with curly hair there to represent those long-suffering folk.

I think it resembles the Princess and I loved it at first glimpse. In any event, if William and Harry are pleased with it, which they obviously are, that is all that matters.
I don't see the "warmth" in the face of Diana that was always so evident with her. If they used the photograph as the example, where is the smile that was in the picture? It just doesn't capture the essence that was Diana in my eyes. Warmth and love. Missing

The video shows Harry doing a lot of talking and hand gestures , that is probably the most he has spoken since he married that person. How sad that Harry is so beneath William in dignity and honor.
