A few things - I’m like 95% sure the first Worlds video will be up next Sunday, but I don’t want to say that definitively until it’s completely finished and uploaded. But stay tuned! I went through the captions and made sure they were accurate to what we were saying, so that is available if you wanted to turn them on. And we switched puzzles between the flipping race and then the real race, because Alejandro knew his older copy was missing a piece. The new one was completely fine out of the box. I'm not sure if that was confusing or not.
Take your time!! We know it's a lot of footage for you to edit. As a viewer who has need captions, I appreciate you taking the time to work on the captions!
The elevator music you found to play while you were catching up is next-level creativity. People notice things like that but they don't know how much work is sometimes necessary to find just the right melody.
Oh Karen, thank you for letting us be a guest at your puzzle meet-up. Not only such a wonderful portrait of him, along with this preview at the end it is just wonderful story telling and without a doubt the perfect kick-off to the greatest series of world's recap yet! Just getting so hyped!
I’m definitely a pile maker when I puzzle, especially when I have puzzles that have more distinct sections. I’ll literally sort them into their piles, then do a bunch of mini puzzles until they’re all connected. Might not always be the fastest but makes it so much more satisfying for me in the moment
What a great guy! There is one thing I noticed, especially in the time lapse, was that Alejandro is able to organize his workflow in a way that he is most of the time working in a very small area with only very short necessary movements of his hands. In this way he has less "airtime" while moving than you, Karen, in this direkt comparison and thinking about the number of movements I think that brings him also some seconds advantage. I am looking forward to the videos of the championship, have a great time!
With the flipping, Karen starts at the far side, leaning over the pile further, and works down. That means you don’t know how much room you will need to finish, and might overestimate and then spend more time reaching. Alejandro starts near himself and moves away, so when he’s done with pieces he has used the minimum amount of table space and won’t be as tired bending/reaching over. And won’t have to readjust flipped pieces if he guessed wrong about the space required.
My favorite part of watching puzzling (and puzzling) is the methodology and technique of each individual - such a fascinating study of how people process...❤
Aside from not tapping/pressing, Alejandro has some other efficient techniques: Flipping: He brings clumps closer, flipping from furthest in that clump first. He stacks multiple edge pieces in his right hand, before transferring them to the edge pile near himself, (to the right). If you stack in your left, perhaps make your edge pile near you to the left. Flip multiple pieces when possible. Puzzling: His pile is in a smaller area. He gathers multiple pieces in each hand when gathering a section. He utilizes his left hand as much as possible, in both gathering and placing. Even the last pieces, he will have a piece in each hand. He is not ambidextrous, he has just practiced with alternate hands. Both: His hands are only flat to spread, and otherwise always curved ready to pinch the next piece. He didn't stop to push his hair back, (or drop pieces lol). Minimise repeated movements, get your left hand placing, tie your hair back, and beat him 🧩
This was an amazing video! You and Alejandro are very talented speed puzzlers that’s for sure! I thoroughly enjoyed the music track and sound you played during the puzzling… The high energy while you were competing and then the more elevator music/hold music when you were a bit behind Alejandro. It’s a subtle thing but definitely added to the entertainment!❤
I found it fascinating watching the different placement techniques. As Karen mentions, Alejandro puts the pieces in and moves on to the next - and he’s using both hands. Karen puts a piece in its place and then each time presses it again and moves on to the next piece. I also really liked Alejandro’s puzzles. The striped chevron design looked like it would be a very satisfying puzzle to do. Both designs are really interesting. Thanks so much for sharing your visit with Alejandro. 🙂
What a great video. Also great build up to your worlds video. Still don’t know the results so your coverage will be like watching it live, super excited.
I just found one of your collab puzzles at a thrift store and I was so excited. I haven’t been able to afford one yet so I’m excited to finally get the chance.
Very well done! It was really fun to see how different you puzzles are. I think you were stressed that he was so fast. Fun interview and interesting. Unbelievable that he hasn't been competing for so many years and is so good.
Impressed by Karen identifying the random missing piece from the Group E Paris puzzle lol I watched a bunch of the competition live this year and was genuinely on the edge of my seat for a lot of it😆can't wait to see even more coverage of it
What a great video! Delightful all the way through! And BTW, if he saves a millisecond with his gentle push on every piece, that's only half a second on a 500-piece puzzle. Not worth worrying about it!
This was a lot of fun to watch! If you don't mind, one thing that I've noticed while watching you compete in these competitions is that you start out very quickly, going neck and neck with all the fastest puzzlers out there. As you get about halfway through, though, your competition seems to catch up and then (a few) pass you by. It might be interesting if you reviewed some of your past videos where you're filming your entire puzzle and calculate your pieces-per-minute (PPM) for the 1st 100 pieces, the 2nd 100 pieces, etc. Then, you could compare your totals with those of other speed puzzlers using these same measurements to see where the very fastest are moving ahead. (This may be WAY too nerdy, though. If so, I apologize!)
Yes, that's what I mean about losing steam partway through, especially after I finish easy sections and move on to the harder sections. It's definitely something I could look into more in the future.
Loved this with both you and Alejandro. I enjoyed watching both of you puzzle at world's. I was part of the Australia team (the slow one loll) but had a blast competing and volunteering at world's I love Alejandro's puzzle it's such a lovely one to do
I love the way you go about puzzling as it has helped me in the past with my own puzzling journey. It's amazing what our strengths are when doing something like this. Watching Alejandro puzzle will never cease to amaze me and he had some great tips!
I think I could have highlighted it more in the video, but I also think part of the key to speed puzzling is doing puzzles all the time, not for speed but just for fun, which he said is most of the puzzling he does. It helps you build that muscle memory, so then in a competition, you’re doing the same thing, except faster.
@KarenPuzzles That's great advice. I will soon participate in a local speed puzzling competition. I am in no means a speed puzzler however! 😅 But I'll just go for the experience. Love your videos by the way!
He's so nice! We deserve more interviews with puzzlers! 😂 Can wait for worlds video 👀 I tried to avoid spoilers (but wasn't successful 😂). The moment at the end, you got wrong puzzle??? Can't wait to found out what happened!!
I find it funny that I do puzzles for the complete opposite reason as you guys.. I like taking lots of time doing a puzzle because it's way more satisfying for me to do it that way lol. But, holy crap Alejandro is so fast!!!

I feel like I need to be practicing based off him! I’ve been so focused on learning your techniques just to get better at speed puzzling but wow. It would be awesome to see how much faster you go when you utilize some of his techniques
Hi Karen, I don’t comment often but I have an important question. Background, I am a 15 year old puzzler working on my second giant puzzle. It is my second section of an 18,000 piece, and I have been keeping track of time. A few days ago, me and my dad got into an argument that resulted in him completely knocking it off the table. I was able to save a few connected sections, but I am wondering do I continue keeping track of time? Or should I just fix what I had knocked over, then track time again? Edit- It was about 60% done and now it is at maybe 30% done
First, just regarding the puzzle. I would keep tracking and make a note on your time card when the incident happened, and then another note when you get to about the same point again. Then you’ll have all the data, and you can estimate your time for if that hadn’t occurred. I don't think I can use both hands for putting pieces in, can't split my attention well enough, it would make it even slower I think. For flipping and grabbing pieces, sure I can do that.
Why do you only sort the edges when flipping? I only do 1000 piece puzzles and always sort the sections straight away. I can't do speed puzzling because of an energy limiting illness, so I can't test how fast I would be. But is it because 500 piece puzzling are easier to oversee?
I've found that trying to sort more than one thing significantly slows down my flip time. It's easier to sort the edges (or just one section) and then go back to all of the flipped pieces to pull everything else. But, some people like Kristin do a very detailed sort upfront, so different people have different strategies.
@KarenPuzzles oh interesting! It does take a bit more brain power to remember all the different things I'm trying to sort at once. So I could see why that would have a negative impact on speed. Thanks, I'll look into Kristin's strategies a bit more :)
Alejandro’s English is very good. Unless Things have changed, it’s not a regular part of school curricula there. And anyway, it’s not just scholastic level. I wonder how he learned.
I mentioned that in the pinned comment. We switched puzzles between contests since he knew his older copy was missing a piece and about where in the puzzle it was.

Karen starts faster, but her methods are slower as she goes. Alejandro sets up more slowly, but his methods move faster.

I don't think I can use both hands for putting pieces in, can't split my attention well enough, it would make it even slower I think. For flipping and grabbing pieces, sure I can do that.
