Harvest of Empire: Juan González on Landmark Book, Immigration & Consequences of U.S. Imperialism

- As the Summit of the Americas wrapped up in Los Angeles with President Biden announcing a plan to address migration in the Western Hemisphere that includes a series of so-called bold actions, we spend the hour with Democracy Now! co-host, professor, longtime journalist and author Juan González, who has just released the newly revised edition of his landmark 2000 book, “Harvest of Empire: A History of Latinos in America.” González’s best-seller has been expanded to include more contemporary Lantix history, such as U.S. immigration policy under Presidents Trump and Biden, the overpolicing of non-U.S. citizens and how it connects to a history of Western colonialism in the region. While European colonization caused Latin America to be “the incubator of the American empire,” the millennial immigration apparatus has become fixated on “kicking out Latin Americans, and no one is doing anything about it,” says González. He also examines the culture and history of Latinos and discusses the history of U.S. involvement and imperialism in countries like the Dominican Republic, where many of the immigrants here in New York City hail from, and the conditions of Guatemala’s Indigenous peoples under the brutal U.S.-backed government that drove many of them to leave their country and head north in search of safety.

Juan, I'm proud of you for giving a resounding voice to the Latino community. Your thorough analysis of historical events sheds abundant light on the conditions affecting the Hispanic community in this country.
With the Homeless Crisis in the United States, why can't we utilize that same 4 Pillar platform to help the Homeless. The Homeless are migrating from state to state. We have enough land to help all, but we cannot pay to own or rent in the United States. The change and composition is becoming bigger and currently it is undercounted to include the Homeless in our Territories especially the young people.

One of few times I have herd someone, analyzing reality of what drives my latin brothers to migrate to the USA. Exploration of those countries resources, with military force, supporting dictators, and over throwing democratic elected presidents.
If the USA DOES NOT change it's foreign policy towards Latin America, we will isolate our self. This countries are fed up of USA exploitation and are starting to turn away from doing business with USA. They are starting to Unify Latin America as one. To be honest as a Mexican American I agree in unifying Latin America and exclude us the USA. We have caused all their distraction and will keep on doing it, as the policy indicates "in the USA interest."
We need to be thought a lesson in order to become a better world, for the future.

As United States continues to have contemporary Latin America, China has started helping Latin America with its infrastructure. For example, the United States controls Mexico's refineries. So Mexico may have a lot of petroleum but it has to use American companies to refine that petroleum. China is going to help Mexico build six refineries so that Mexico can refine its own petroleum. China is offering Mexico a very inexpensive bullet train. So there will be six bullet trains in Mexico. One from Mexico to Guadalajara but several going from Oaxaca and Chiapas which is southernmost Mexico all the way to Mexicali and other Northern cities. There will be another one along the Baja California region. What this means is that somebody from Mexico City can go to Guadalajara in about 2 hours at a cost of about $12. They're helping Mexico create highways and freeways whereas the US refuses to. Ironically, the United States helped Canada build its infrastructure and taught Canadians and the UK and Australia and New Zealand how to build their infrastructure but refused to do so for Mexico. To this date the United States controls the printing of Mexican pesos. How can a country be sovereign when it can't control its own money. So when the US is not in accord with Mexico, all it does is flush the Mexican economy with pesos that the United States has printed and it undermines and obliterates the Mexican economy.
Imagine China becoming allies with Mexico and we happen to start a war over Taiwan or Ukraine whereas Russia and China are Allies and then also allies with Mexico. The US will be so fucked..
The Mexican government owns PMex...don't lie.
@@gingeroveda8352 yes but the United States controls the refining of the petroleum and yes Mexico has a very old refinery, one refinery. And the United States basically charges them to use it.
Where did you get your data ? You are wrong. There is no Chinese investment in infrastructure. It will be a direct violation of TMEC agreement.
1 Olemca Dos Bocas refinery is built on Mexican budget, I mean our taxes
2 Mexico Pemex bought refinery Deer Park in Texas, on our plan to be refining our oil did domestic use
3 Tren Maya, southeast train, is built by the military in most paths. There is no Chinese investment there.
4 Corredor Interoceanico on the Istmus to compete with the Panama Canal is being built with tax money and building the industrial parks around the area.

6:21 Thank you Juan. I’ve been saying this for a while now, the global immigration crisis is a consequence of the long years of Western imperialism that have greatly destabilised The Third World and not leaving it to a) thrive on it’s own terms, i.e. for its peoples and b) not leaving it to find its way into developmental models that cater for its peculiar needs. I’m briefly reminded of the Indonesian Surkano who made efforts to do away with West Parliamentary democracy in Indonesia because he felt it necessitating predatory conduct on citizenry by politicians and wished to formulate a govt model in which civil society was actively involved in decision making up the higher levels of power. Of course, the US orchestrated a coup and did away with him.

No nuestra raza. Porque somos de raza Americana, Europea, Africana y Asiática y una mezcla entre todos esos. Bajo la unidad de una cultura Hispana y una lengua Castellana o Español. Somos Hispanos, Hispanics or Spanish.

It's irresponsible to suggest China is an honest broker in Latin America or elsewhere. China is just as exploitative as the West, and you'd be naive to think otherwise. Just ask Ecuador...some estimates say they are $11 billion in debt to the Chinese. Much of that debt will be paid through oil exports. The Chinese brought their engineers, built a dam near a heavily forested, remote part of Ecuador near an active volcano, and within two years, cracks began forming within the concrete foundation. It was later discovered Ecuadorian officials took kick-backs from Chinese officials. The US has been and still remains imperialistic. But the Chinese are opportunistic.
China wants to monopolize and exploit the lithium deposits in Mexico!

A very interesting and informative talk. Haven’t read in ages but looking forward to reading this book. Thank you!
Great program, it was very interesting; I really enjoyed it. I´m interested in reading the book written by professor Juan González. It reminds me of the famous book called Open Veins of Latin America. I´d like to mention that there is a difference between being called Hispanic or Latino. The former concept is related to Spain (the Hispanic Peninsula) which represents the Spanish empire that conquered current Mexico, Central and most of South America; so Hispanic is like reminding someone "you are the conquered people, the submmitted ones". The latter concept, Latino, comes from Latin, the language spoken by the Romans who conquered large areas of Europe, Asia and North Africa. Latin was the mother tongue of a great empire. Therefore, there is a huge difference when Latin Americans are called Hispanics instead of Latinos. Regards form Mexico.
Interesting. Thanks.
Our history and identity in general is complicated , latino,Hispanic, are simply cultural identifiers , not races , in fact many Latinos are multiracial , there are also white Latinos ,black ones or indigenous even Asian ones. However knowing how ignorant, stupid ,prejudice and racist some Americans are , they view us as simply brown and Mexican.Yes Marco technically any person from latin America or heritage from there ( like myself born to Salvadorian parents) should stay clear of the terms Latin or Hispanic , unless you are literally a person from a Spanish or Portuguese speaking nation of Italian ,Spanish descent.
I'm Mediterranean skinned but I know I have some African or native ancestry, so usually I just tell people I'm salvadorian, since my parents are from El Salvador and I am not entirely euro or indigenous etc so I'm a salvadorian dude.
What a powerful segment. Thank you so much Juan! 🙏🏾 Purchasing your book right now.

We are the first Americanos we should not have to be Xed.

We are not able to care for ourselves! It is only right to pressure the Southern American continent to improve living conditions and support for these displaced families. Questions
Why the people in countries around USA are getting poorer and poorer except Canada (with Anglo-Saxons DNA)?
Why people in countries around China are getting better?
They don't want anyone else to prosper. Give Latinos an even playing field and they will surpass everyone. They are a smart, resilient people. They will be here long after the Anglo Saxons are gone. Mark my words. They are fertile and procreate easily while Anglos are struggling in that area.
More importantly, there must be a reason they're all going to so much trouble to get here. They don't seem so traumatized by what they left. They seem well adjusted, well dressed, in order! There's a deeper reason here and we're missing it. Whatever is really driving all these ppl to flood us now, has to come to light sooner or later. This is so bizarre.
Peoples came over here, I mean to the USA because it's the very foreigner USA political rule towards Latin American , using theirs puppets vassals and sepoys to keep looting and ripping off those countries in favor of the USA corporation , the reason all those countries are living in a extension of the European colonialism under a royalty monarchy like system.
Why those people came over USA well dressed? Well you need to know that Latin America is the European and Canada and USA dumping sites from all those fashion clothing companies and in Latin America countries it's very easy find mountains of used and out of fashioned clothes for free .
USA have installed in Latin America a Plutocracy political system wearing democracy clothes.
Here in the USA we too are living under such a plutocratic anglosajón system but because the angloxajone empire owns the Petro dollar and the internal revenue service and the Petro dollar, all of them in private hands and non the government plus anglosajones running wall Street in New York City, the impact of the social differences are much less than in Latin American.
Haven't the angloxajon ethnic group came to America 300 years behind the Spaniards empire, the Portuguese and the French, probably the whole Americans continent today would have been a copycat from Europe.
Were the British immigrants into north American the ones who destroyed the totally the social harmony from the creation of the so called new world.
@Ma Wi And upon what evidence do you base your conclusion that, "They don't seem so traumatized by what they left"? I assume that your assertion rests upon viewing less than half a minute's worth of video. Terribly slim evidence indeed.
No one has mentioned the fact that the last of the baby boomers will be fully retired in the next 5 years, not to mention the trend of early retirement. It's an employees' market. We need workers. Still, we should work on push factors.
The federal law enforcement apparatus (or police in general) has never really been about public safety and security or fighting crime. If that were the case, every living president along with their golfing buddy and family co-conspirators would be in prison. Thanks for pointing out the data Juan - this is truly fuel for intellectual self defense - at least for one working class Indigenous Chicano. I think I already own like three copies of the book and it looks like I'll own yet another!

Wow, love you. So much love. Congratulations, I'm going to gave to read the book! I love the bit about how ethnicity is a social construct that is fluid and allows each generation to identify itself. latinx for americans that have immegrated it is, rejecting the term is not the hill i'm about to die on hahaha
The 70-yr long waves of immigrants since the 1960s from the ‘greater’ Southern continent - all of South & Central America, Mexico, Cuba & Puerto Rico (relocating citizens) - resemble the waves of ‘less-desirable’ minorities (as seen by the ‘civilized’ N. European WASP majority) from the European “South”1/ during our 80-yr transition from a late-1840s, mainly rural-agrarian economy to our late-1920s middle-class mass consumption economy.2/
The main cultural distinction between the two mass immigration eras lies in how the earlier immigrants, for good or I’ll, were usually identified by their countries of origin, both procedurally & in the popular culture. The positive aspect of this is that the person is afforded dignity in our culture, one that respects the individual.
During the latter immigration era, to the present, immigrants have been lumped into an overly-broad demographic category -originally “Spanish-speaking” or “Hispanic”, then “Latino” then “Latino/Latina”, then briefly, “Latin@“ (like some kind of trademark).3/
While there is, or may be, value in clustering related national origin groups for governmental purposes (depending on the reader’s politics), the pitfalls should not be overlooked. So long as the US pursues global empire (as it has since expanding west in violation of the treaty limiting it to the 13 colonial territories)4/, while it perpetuates the effects of the white supremacy it formed in the colonial era, and that was made an integral part of the new nation’s basic law, no amount of tweaking the nomenclature of racial & origin identities to address discrimination or inequality is likely to succeed.
Systemic discrimination, particularly vs. Blacks, is woven into the fabric of America so thoroughly that we don’t see it - eg, to the point that we were well into the pandemic before our health managers realized how seriously Blacks were being affected by the virus.
Notes
1/ European ‘South’ roughly defined by a line drawn N of Ireland, Spain & Portugal, Florence in Italy, then heading N to the W of Czechia & Poland, into the Baltic Sea, and arcing NE to encompass the Baltic states & Russia.
With some exceptions as to cause, the peoples here were impoverished by the destruction, dislocation & instability caused as old empires in decline & new rising nations continually fought wars & shifted borders.
2/ The former period runs from before our rail expansion (when >3rd of farmland fed horses, other working animals & ~3.5 million chattel slaves) to the US becoming the leading industrial power at the peak of its imperial expansion (completing Manifest Destiny & acquiring Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico & the Philippines).
To add a little perspective, from 1865-1905, rail lines expanded from 30k miles to ~210-240k miles, switched from wood fuel to coal, and so thoroughly connected the nation’s continental economy & its ports that it soon became the leading trading nation.
3/ ‘Latinx’ (‘Lateenkz’) is the latest Anglo effort from academia to merge the genders, but it’s going nowhere: 90% of Latinos hate it. Some suggest ‘Latine’ as the generic for an individual, or talking to or about groups of Latinas y Latinos.
How about America stop destabilizing it's neighboring countries... commit to fair trade and stay out of other countries affairs.
Thank you, sincerely
YES! THE CHICKENS ARE COMING HOME TO ROOST.
I went to a pretty nice public high school in North Carolina a little bit over a decade ago I think. There was a pretty large population of Latino people that went there, and I was always jealous of their diligence and drive. There were a lot of people as well that were that white passing to the point I often didn't know their ethnicity until I learned their name. We even had a black principle! There were plenty of parents that were mildly surprised, which is hilarious and a little telling. The voters were mostly the John McCain kind of conservatives, with a pinch of pretty far right views on some social issues.
Yeah many of us of Spanish European ancestry, but I've met also Italian and even latinos of french or German descent lol .The really brown Latinos or ones you can still are still not entirely white like my family , are actually indigenous. There's a Latin Trap artist that I listen to called Rosalia that has gotten heat recently for winning a Latin music award but because shes from Spain and well is black haired but has a pale white/ olive skin tone , many Latinos don't really want her music recognized because of everything I said.
My grandsons didn't know they are called," others".I call them Human beings
Korean, Latino and Caucasian
Juan Gonzalez should also update his book on Bill DeBlasio "Reclaiming Gotham" things didn't turn out the way Juan had hoped they would.
Thank you, DN!.
5: 13 "the reason there are so many Latinos and people from Latin America coming into the US is that Latin America was the start of the American empire. It was where the first overseas colonies of the United States came into existence. it's where the United States constantly was intervening with its military forces, where most of the major multinational companies began to grow. Companies like the United Fruit Company. Latin America was the incubator of the American empire."
BULL shit
WE DON’T USE THE TERM “LATINX”
Most if not all migrants or intending migrants have one thing in common…..that is to provide for their children. Most of them have multiple children to take care of. This also means that people don’t want to or don’t control birth rate
great interview. sometimes you don't have to go far for a guest star
He lied about the DUI being an aggravated felony
Imagine all the so called Christian American people who when they die are asked by St. Peter,” how did treat little children ?“ and the sins of racism, classism and prejudice come flooding to their memories. Maybe there is no hell but maybe there is. Just imagine.

You don’t make friends by threatening them, but by helping them, seems China is taking the better path in both Africa and South America , poor people don’t care who’s in power as long as their basic needs are met…good book, I agree with the perspectives in this book..
