    Novel writing is NOT about perfect writing. Some old man who lived by sea in Cuba said, "A first draft is always sh&t." Writing is about editing. You can't edit something that you haven't written. The best cure for writer's block is a stun gun, used strategically on various gluteal aspects of the aforementioned writer. Some guy, who is The Shining example of a writer, who lives up in Maine said it best: "You have to keep writing every day even if it feels like you are shoveling sh%t uphill with a typewriter." You never finish a novel, you abandon it.

      What I love about writing is that I'm realizing it's just like film. The director shoots a bunch of shots but it's the cinematographer who makes the story work.

      Exactly! The first draft will be a big steaming pile of inadequacy. Get the bloody work to a point that you are happy abandoning it to the world like a child flying from the nest.

      It's like the parables Jesus Christ spoke in. He had to teach them in ways they understood, thought in, knew already. (farming, money, their cultural structure, etc) and tied that into the bigger truth and spiritual things they couldn't see taste or touch.....simply fantastic!

    Best tips
    Establish character, his/her want, and the obstacle.
    Make it dramatic. Exaggerate.
    Drag out conflict, make them crave the resolution.

    Glad I finally found something that I could understand from "storytelling". I have been learning how to "tell a story" with vlogs for weeks now and looked at a lot of "set-up conflict and resolution", which were understandable but hard to apply. @@thefutur I would love some more videos on storytelling. It would be great to have a use case where the content is good, (or complete) but it is laid out in an uninteresting manner and how you would change it or work on the storytelling aspects, to show how your principles applied can make the use case interesting to the viewer.

    story delaying is only effective if the audience is still engaged and interested. If people get too bored and impatient, they'll zone out. Too many bloggers and content writers take too long to get to the point of the post. People want value and entertainment, not babble and procrastination.

    • @thefutur
      @thefutur  6 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      story delaying is effective when their rising action. you are right that people will get bored if you don't present a problem, challenge or outcome they don't care about.

      @yoyoz333 6 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      and it doesn't help that society has become so attention deficit. a couple years ago people were happy to watch a 10 minute video, now you have to caption and describe whats going to happen in a 15 second video for people to watch it. maybe its because so many people are creating similar content, that everyone is more picky about what will be worth their time.

    00:00 📖 Stories hinge on conflict; a character's desire meets obstacles.
    01:40 🌟 Conflict arises when subjective expectations clash with objective reality.
    02:38 🔄 Structure: Normal, Explosion, New Normal; disrupt the normal to create interest.
    03:53 ⏳ Delay story conclusion, pose dramatic questions, heighten conflict.
    04:35 🧠 Stories teach lessons; characters grow through struggles and change.
    05:38 💥 Make stories dramatic by exaggerating emotions and situations.

    I always come back to your content Chris. Really great stuff. My favourite tip was no.5 and how you make it relatable to people doing vlogs. I'm not a vlogger but do photo editing videos and wondered if there's a way to add drama to the videos I'm creating? Initially, my approach has been, "here's how I edit this", or "here's how I edited this" and show the Photoshop layer structure - informative but boring!... I'm thinking a more exciting way to do it would be to (thanks to your storytelling video):
    1: Setting the scene: how the shot was captured and what my expectations are for the edit
    2: Explosion: The edit
    3: New Normal: lessons I learnt in the editing process, what worked, what didn't...
    I have no idea if this format would work or whether storytelling is irrelevant to a photo editing style video. Chris, if you get a chance to reply with any thoughts or ideas on this you'd make my lockdown :) Cheers for the killa content!
