On a wonderful sunny Saturday we went to pay a visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady at Mariastein. It’s located in a lovely small village and the Church is so beautiful and the grotto is most peaceful. The way down to the grotto is full of tiles with thank you to Our Lady for her protection and help for various occasions. I very much recommend a visit to this Sanctuary. It’s a for couples, families, solo as well as for friends. As far as I know it’s not possible to go down to the grotto in a wheelchair.
The main chapel is quite ornate and well preserved. After a longish walk down a long hall and down some stairs you come to a small inspiring chapel dedicated to Mary who saved a boy when he fell off the cliff the chapel is built into. One can feel the reverence and Holiness in this small space and one can see why it has been a popular pilgrimage site. The Kloster is off the beaten path but it is well worth it and the trip there is very scenic.
Mariastein Abbey is a Benedictine monastery in Metzerlen-Mariastein in the Canton of Solothurn, Switzerland. Mariastein, after Einsiedeln, is the second most important place of pilgrimage in Switzerland. Over the Chapel of Grace now stands a late Gothic three-aisled basilica.
