My favorite part of stage makeup is the base. I can cake it on a much as I want and it doesn't matter. I love doing crazy contouring that would look horrible in real life but looks great on stage.
Katie, do you perhaps know how the darker skinned dances adapted the look for their skin tones? Regarding the base, would they use darker powders and creams for the highlight or would they also use white powders?
Great tutorial! Sending this to my niece so she understands the fundamentals and full application for stage. Something that is not taught to students in smaller schools even when they are preforming a lot. Thanks!
Going into opera tech week and this really helped me with looks for the two characters I'm playing (opera scenes and a full opera). Last semester, I could get away with using bold regular makeup for Der Schauspieldirektor, but my characters for the shows this week needed a more neutral look and this was perfect! Thank you!
This literally came at the most perfect time. I am a dancer so performed before. I am in my school musical and our shows are next week. I love getting more ideas on how to get full coverage but not cakey makeup. Love it so much ❤️
Great video. I always love how NYCB dancer make-up looks and have always wanted to make my face look that way onstage too but never knew exactly all the steps . Thank you for making this video!
can you explain the difference between using a rosy/berry shade and a red? I know the more orangey reds work better in blue lighting but I never know what to use when it's brighter.
This was so helpful!! I'm in sleeping beauty with my dance school and I'm the fairy of the golden vine, this is just what I need since it's in 3 weeks!!! Thank you so much!
Thanks for the video. Had to put stage makeup on my daughters for the first time yesterday. Following your video and some others made it really straightforward.
Hahaha you are like "you don't have to be perfect cause we're going to blend it in a minute" with the eyeliner and still manage to do a better job with eyeliner than me. Love you!
Coconut oil works better than anything else. Just make sure to use an oil-free facial cleanser to remove the coconut oil! Don't want to mess up your skin with that extra oil.
Hi Kathryn! I love this video and all your makeup tutorials. I was wondering if maybe you could do a video about what makeup you wear during rehearsals? I have a hard time finding makeup that doesn't feel gross after dancing for a bit. That would be super helpful, thanks!!
I have tech rehearsals in 2 weeks so I'll definitely practice with some of what you did! I have to have my makeup and hair done I think 5 nights with rehearsals and then the show so I'll have to practice doing bolder makeup😅💓
I've just binge watched all your stage and character inspired tutorials. I appreciate that you use both higher end products and some drugstore brands for your tutorials. However, I am wondering if you have favourite stay-put brands for eye makeup specifically. I note that the Urban Decay liners make lots of appearances in your videos but you set them with eyeshadow powder. Do you have brands of primer, shadow, liner etc. that you feel most confident in their durability on stage (sweating under lights?)
Ironically this is moreorless exactly the same as a lot of TH-cam makeup videos - because looking stage madeup is very fashionable. I think it's daft myself, because people could halve it and still look good if heavily painted on the street
Could you do a video on regular, more neutral stage makeup for students? My school wants us to look a little younger, but I have trouble blending and making my eyes look bigger.
Thank you so much for this video! 🤗 How often do you replace your make up, and wash your brushes? I don't wear make up very often, pretty much only for performances and formal events, so I find especially for mascara that it dries out or doesn't apply nicely after a while. I've heard for some products a month or a few months, and I don't want to buy new make up every time I want to wear it, which is a couple times a year.
Usually they'll have expiration dates but I'd recommend looking for travel sizes in the makeup you use because it'll be less makeup so you won't waste much when if it dries up.
This isn't related to the video at all, but I was just wondering if you could answer or it be in a Q and A. Im just beginning pointe, and I got fitted, and my teacher liked the shoes on my feet. However in class the pain almost feels intolerable. I dont know if its just because Im a beginner, or if maybe my shoes are not fitting correctly. Any advice on the difference between normal pointe pain, and incorrectly fitted shoes pain? Thanks
Professional stage makeup is another level ❤❤❤❤ Katie, I always had this doubt...I notice you always apply a light eyeshadow under your eyebrows when you're doing an everyday makeup look, and you say it's to open up your eyes. But I notice you never did it on your stage makeup looks, and this is where we need the most to have those expressive eyes, it is supposed to be more open. Is there a reason for you to choose not to do it in your stage makeup looks?
I know I'm super late but from the audience she probably wouldn't want it to look like her eyebrows are blending with her eyes. Instead she puts highlighter separate her eyes and brows
Hi Kathryn !! Please can you answer a question that i am desperate to get answered. as a professional ballerina are your pointe shoes made of wood ? when i was younger i thought they were made of wood but now i have pointe shoes myself i know theyre not , i keep getting my friends arguing with me that pointe shoes are wood ( even though they dont do bale themselves) . i just saw a hack video and the lady said the shoes are made of wood , but mine arent , please explain!!!
The shank (sole) of the pointe shoe is made of wood. The box and the vamp are made of layers of paper paste and fabric, also glue. The sides of the shoe are just canvas fabric and satin. Also, if you dance ballet you should know its not spelled bale
Pointe shoe World the box is made from layers of fabric, a type of cardboard, and/or paper that is hardened by a paste (glue). The rest of the shoe is made from satin and other fabrics
I have a make up question. my summer intensive is coming up, and we always have a recital at the end showcasing what we learned. They said make up is optional, but not to where any thing to dark, or heavy. but we have a real stage, and stage lights! I don't want my face to be washed out! What should I do? Also I love your dancing! Best wishes, Anna
if lay off on the eyes maybe, use browns and neutrals over blacks and greys and then maybe just use a full coverage foundation and concealer and contour. You'll probably have a dress rehearsal practice in full makeup and get someone to take a photo of you and then change things from there xx
Hey Katie! Quick question I’ve heard conflicting information about foundation shade. Some people say get your exact shade and some say get a shade 1-2 shades darker. What’s your opinion on this? Thanks so much!
Very useful tips, but I recommend removing the foundation out of your lips (cleaning them with make up wipes) before going in with lip liner and lipstick....
Can you please do a video about pointe? Also, I really want to audition for SAB's summer program, but I didn't do pointe for a long time. But I am the best in my class, and I look at TH-cam videos and learn harder moves. Do you think I can audition for SAB's summer program?
I can’t find any stage make up tutorials for black girls. I’m half black so my skin is a little lighter than a black person but it’s darker than a white person. Instead of a white foundation stick should I just use a lighter color?
Use a few shades lighter than your skin tone, if your skin is a rich, or deeper color then I wouldn't recommend white, just because it really wont blend as well. Just saw that your comment was from a year ago lol and im just answering it now...
@@kathryn_morgan oh no! 🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️🤦🏻♀️ But I’ve been so pleased to see life developing for you recently. As someone who’s a bit older, and the mother of daughters, the work you do on body image is so massively important. Thank you for using your platform in this way xx
My eyes are super sensitive, and they get irritated very easily. So I don't wear mascara. But I do wear eyeshadow with no problem. Any other tips to make my eyes pop without mascara? I'm not a dancer; I'm just asking for my everyday makeup look.
I know this probably isn’t your forte but can you do like a grunge punk 80s rock make up look? Because that’s what I need to do for my next show and I’m like so lost.
usually your foundation or base is supposed to be a shade or two darker than your normal skin color so the lights don’t wash you out and make you look too light
"Don't panic, you don't have to do this, this is just, you know, professional"
I died😂😂
omg your eyes are normally stunning enough, but in this makeup? I nearly fell off my chair. You are gorgeous!
This is stage make up . Stage makeup are deffrent from ordinary or daily make up

Oh my goodness! Perfect timing! I have to do my own makeup today for a dress rehersal because my mom won't be here...❤️😱
And I have a Performence tomorrow!!!!!
Sometimes i honestly believe Kathryn is psychic
book_worm_ballerina_ 5678 I know right! I also have a dress rehearsal today and and recital tomorrow!
Same!
Same! But it's pretty easy for me, my mom used to be a makeup artist so she teaches classes at my studio, I learned early tho.
i love it when videos are an exact number!!
Last time I was this early my pointe shoes would last a year
Mark's Voice best joke ever!
Do you buy your own makeup or did NYCB provide you with it?
This literally came at the most perfect time. I am a dancer so performed before. I am in my school musical and our shows are next week. I love getting more ideas on how to get full coverage but not cakey makeup. Love it so much ❤️
Never in a million years will I put this much effort into my makeup, but these videos are just so calming that I watch them anyway.

Isn't it funny how nowadays stage makeup and TH-cam beauty guru "daytime look" makeup is about the same.
Natasha Estrada yeah! contoured cut crease look with red lips, wait, you mean stage makeup right?
Yup just the average going to Starbucks makeup nowadays.
4 years later, this is an understated natural look in comparison to TH-cam regular makeup tutorials.
Hunny this is the third make up tutorial of yours that I've seen today and you amaze me. I love your technique & tips. You do it all beautifully. =)
Kathryn...you need a product line...you are gorgeous! clothes, makeup, supplements everything for ballet!
that was like an ultimate highlighter challenge

Coconut oil is always your friend ;D

micellar water is amazing for removing makeup!!
@@willowillowillowillow6458 I leave it, just pat the extra off, and my skin is super smooth after. But everyone's skin is different!

Thank you! This is a great tutorial for stage makeup!
I love with this look! Your eyes are beautiful btw!!!!! Much love ❤️!!!
hey gorgeous kathryn. this look is super beautiful i loove how soft it turned out eventhough it is a stage makeup

Kathryn Cookson some makeup has expiration dates on it! It'll usually say something like "6mo" which would be six months from when you opened it!
Usually they'll have expiration dates but I'd recommend looking for travel sizes in the makeup you use because it'll be less makeup so you won't waste much when if it dries up.
when you put the white concealer it reminded of Black Swan movie scene when she was doing her makeup

Do men have to wear makeup for ballet stage performances and are they expected to or do they just go on stage as is?
Moondustangel 889 men wear stage makeup yes or their features get washed out
I'm not sure about ballet, but in Theatre men wear makeup - not always though. Foundation and eyeliner usually
will that white sticks work for medium brown to deep skin tone?
Woo i will do this make up on my TH-cam channel
