It is much better to remove the outer shell first while it's fresh and green . Lesser work to be done. You can dry it with its hard shell. No need to brush and wash. It is also messier if you let the green outer shell rot.

Yes i have harvested black walnuts for many years. Easy to cut the green layer off and the pulp inside before it goes all black. Must wear rubber gloves, stains on hands last for weeks. can lay out in sun to dry, i use the oven, onlu way to crack nut is with hammer lol....but well worth the trouble. @@tranthihuong-vx
