This is the kind of reporting that should be universal.
Not forgetting all the horror, terror, and genocide is paramount.
The constant refrain from ⚪ people telling us colonized to "be nice" and "be respectful" is infuriating.
If one wants nice and respectful, how about don't do genocide. Maybe try that.

Respecting the Queen for performing that role in a truly incredible way doesn't mean you brush the reality of history under the carpet.

I agree. Her passing does draw attention to the institution of monarchy, to the Commonwealth, to the continuing imbalance of power and wealth between the UK and the former colonies, especially when it comes to natural resources and banking. I was glad to hear the City of London mentioned. All these opaque neocolonial operations need to end.

The system behind her however, which she upheld, is not something I share the same admiration for. The UK is now assuring the world that the British Empire ended long ago but there are still many countries in the Caribbean and South Pacific that are beholden to that nation, and the colonial histories there won't be looked upon favourably in future years.

Many people, especially children were tortured and murdered by the British colonial forces in Malaya, now Malaysia. We are not demanding the British to kneel down on their knees and apologize to us. Our sole aspiration is for our national treasures such as jewels, gold bars, manuscripts and etc to be returned to us. During British colonial days in Malaya, many local chiefs were executed and their family members were left penniless. We want the British to compensate their descendants in monetary form and the British royal family must acknowledge the past murderous executions.

She never apologized for the wealth that made the royal family on the backs of exploiting human beings. She never apologized for maintaining an apartheid mindset by dividing people into classes of nobles and commons. I walked passed the Heals Store on Tottenham Court Road. Its an upmarket design-led home furnishing store in Central London. The windows were part blacked out and a huge digital billboard bore a monochrome image of the late Queen. Sheltering in the colonnade of the huge store, lit by the in memoriam of the Queen were four separate tents that were the only homes of the inhabitants.

What the hell did any of that have to do with them? Whatever did or did not happen under the British Empire and colonialism has little to nothing to do with the British monarch, who didn't have enough power to do anything about Imperial politics and policy even if they'd wanted to. It was politicians, elected officials and military men who are to blame for everything that went on in the British Empire. The monarch was simply the figurehead.

I wish they would have this discussion on any UK news channel, all you see coordinated curated propaganda being pumped out 24/7 with news anchors and commentators tripping over themselves to gush as much praise onto the queen as possible and only air interviews with the public that replicate such gushing praises. The reality of the situation is the colonial imperial Empress that has just died was a glorified puppet of the sate and intrinsically part of the colonial and now predominantly imperial British empire. She never share her private thoughts in interviews and all the public see is a carefully choreographed puppet show, the sycophantic mainstream media then project any qualities and traits on this puppet like she was some saint - she was an Colonial Imperial Empress in all but name and nobody really knows what she actually thought.

Evidently you don't know what Stockholm Syndrome is - the British people loved the Queen and even many who have had one reason or another to dislike King Charles will in time come around to accepting him in that role. The British empire was already on its way to disappearing when Elizabeth acceded the throne. When India achieved its independence in 1947 -- five years before Elizabeth became Queen -- that was really the beginning of the end. For her part, Elizabeth became a champion of the emerging, voluntary commonwealth.
Elizabeth is not responsible for the sins of her forebears. She was not born expecting to become Queen. And she wouldn't have been, but for her uncle's recklessness in abdicating the throne. The role was thrust upon her at the age of 25. It wasn't the life she particularly wanted for herself -- by all accounts, she would have been perfectly comfortable as an English country wife, tending to her dogs and horses. Yet, she accepted her fate without a word of complaint, and did her absolute best to fulfill her role as honorably as anyone possibly could.
Nor was it ever within her power to redress the wrongs of her ancestors, constrained as she was by British law that forbade her from even expressing any opinions about political matters. Even much of "her" wealth was really the property of the Crown, as an institution, and was not hers personally, so she wasn't free to simply sell it off and return the money to former colonies.

The British indirect rule was better than the imperialist rule of China, Spain, Germany, Japan or the Ottoman Empire. The British paved the way of self-governance.
The U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are some great examples of the rule of law set by the British. That is why, one major reason why they are some of the most prosperous and free countries of the world.

I learned recently that Queen Vic told the navy to force slave ships to release their cargo. One ship was forced to unload while passing through the Bahamas. Its load of Yoruba signed a paper swearing allegiance to the Queen as a sign of gratitude.
Then we sailed to Little Farmer's Cay. The descendants of a couple of freed slaves. They were given the island. We also went to Spanish Wells to see how differently they have turned out.

I am fundamentally opposed to having a monarchy but please stop all this saying that we in the UK are taught to worship and respect them - we are not. there are many people in the UK who do feel that way about them but just as many who are completely irreverent. They are the continuous butt of jokes and are criticised constantly about being worthless and expensive and utterly pointless. Not just in private but in the mainstream media. I have met Charles and Camilla many times due to my job and i just call them Charles and Camilla - i do not bow and you do not need to show any deference. I am vaguely interested in her death as a historic moment - just as i am in other world events but life does not stop here and i am not in a period of mourning. I am off to a festival in the park today and a medical appointment and then out for a meal - my Grandchildren are off to a party at a theme park. People are getting married, children are being born and everything is open - the only visible sign i have seen is the flag at the church round the corner is flying at half mast - but they are going ahead with their antique fair today as planned. Yes our mainstream media is giving blanket coverage and that is fine - many people want that just as we get extensive coverage of the Olympic - something else i am not interested in - but all the cable channels and netflix etc are still showing their normal schedule - which is what we watch anyway. Life has not changed and will not change for anyone in the UK - i personally would abolish the monarchy but they are pretty irrelevant to day to day life and so am not bothered enough to spend time thinking about them - not like climate change or the war with Russia - that actually matters! I am not having a party because she has died and i am not cancelling a party because she has died - i am getting on with my life completely unaffected by her death just as everyone else around me in the UK is.

It is my sincere belief that England should be a republic. Why should this parasitic system continue as the English people are forced to accept conditions of austerity? The British monarchy was at the forefront of the older colonialst and present neocolonialist campaigns of aggression against the developing world. Some people say that we republicans (with a lowercase 'r') are being insensitive to Lizzie Saxe-Coburg-Gotha's life, but where is there sensitivity to the millions dead at the hands of the British Empire, whether during the Irish Potato Famine, the wars in the Middle East, various conflicts across the African continent, the Partition of India, the concentration camps of the Boer War, and various other atrocities? This sensitivity is not to be found. Even if her father, George VI, was the last so-called "Emperor of India," all this woman did was manage to re-brand this most horrible institution.

I think it is important to understand it is not the monarchy that has died, but the Queen. Also that this Queen had no influence on the political actions of her government and could not make political statement which means it is her government in name only. Those who speak of the history of the monarchy before her should not speak as if she has lived the same life as Queen as past Queens and Kings who had political influence and are directly responsible for much of the historical atrocities inflicted on other nations. On the contrary, this Queens involvement with the nations past which Queens and Kings and the British government should be criticised for has been a positive one in which work has been done to build a family of peace out of those that were once enemies, and she has succeeded in this despite the continued attempts of the British government to test the patience of these nations and try to find ways to continue the exploitation of these nations. I as a person of African decent am sad at her death and have only positive feelings for her and this feeling is shared by many Africans except maybe those that consider themselves part of a woke culture lead by the West that has nothing to do with African culture and tradition and most Africans want nothing to do with. Unlike Western governments and their attitudes towards Africa, Queen Elizabeth the second has been a positive light and may her soul rest in peace. We will miss her. Peace and love

I would argue that on paper the monarch is merely a figurehead, however the deference shown to them makes me think that behind the scenes they in fact do wield influence. In 1975 the governor general of Australia dismissed an elected government, an unprecedented action. As the Queen's representative, he was meant to consult with the prime minister, however he consulted instead with the Queen and Charles, who apparently ok'd his course of action. The letters exchanged in this period are to this day hidden from the Australian people. The fact that the family were, until relatively recently, exempt from paying taxes etc leads me to think that their influence in protecting the institution ie "The Firm", is very much acted upon by successive British governments.

@@margaretcaine4219 WHAT ABSOLUTE IGNORANCE AND A PACK OF LIES !!! All documents relating to The Dismissal are now in the public domain. Do your research and discover that the Queen rejected the Governor General's assertion that the matter was a constitutional crisis and advised him that the matter was only domestic politics at play. The rest is history as now disclosed documents reveal that the Governor General ignored the Queen's advise and sacked the Whitlam government regardless. So your anger should be directed at only Kerr not the Queen. Having said that, at the snap election called immediately after The Dismissal Whitlam's Labor Party was destroyed and the conservative Liberal Party won by a huge landslide. So democracy won out in the end!

Long live the King! As a citizen of a Commonwealth country observing various forms of Republican and other modes of democratic government and seeing how they are manipulated by partisan groups representing different forms of wealth and power I am grateful to be in a country where the activities of the Head of State (Queen) are defined, restricted and very accountable to the people. Partisan individuals, like for example - Bill Gates , Jeff Bezos, Warren Buffet are not. To define the British Monarchy by its privelege, by wealth alone, is to dismiss the far greater role it performs as a partner in holding the democratic process to account, along with the judiciary and the fourth estate, the media.. The Queen has served and built unity in many respects - unlike many wealthy or political leaders, and to dismiss the monarchy because of inequality when it is political decisions that create that difference is to misunderstand the many steps and stairs that have led the countries of the world to its current state of being. As for comparing the discomfort of poverty and coping in the world today (heating, rent and power) which government leaders and individual companies will be accountable for the excess profiteering while people die of the cold? Should we look to the hard working homeless and ask them how they view the elite in their respective countries? Better the Commonwealth than NATO, I think.
