      @Cailin McKenna is 2000sq inches width and length of the base unbroken and not including tunnels, tubes etc? Did you mean inches because they need at least 6 inches but ideally 10 or more

    I mix clean and cozy and aspen in my detolf and 2 bin cages and all 3 hammies seem to love it! Since the clean and cozy is very warm and the aspen keeps the smell down and helps hold burrows 😁

      exactly the same here, my ham lives in a detolf with aspen, i also a timothy hay

      Same here. I feel like the aspen helps hold his burrows together better than with just the clean & cozy. I just sprinkle in a bit on one side and mix it in then on the other side I just have clean & cozy.

      I've been using paper pellets with baking soda as a base layer too absorb urine and odors in conjunction with kiln dried pine and it's horrible! I 🤔 think I'm allergic too the pine but possibly too the rodents urine or dander in their hair 🤧! All be a using dust 😷 mask and shop vac too vaccum aquarium out and then sterilizing cage inside and out with disinfectant cleaner... I'm going too try Carefresh and or Kaytee bedding and possibly Aspen mixed with it... If nothing improves all be forced too get rid of they as my health is far more important than keeping rodents as pets...

    I use shredded toilet paper. My cage is 500sq bin cage. Roborovski. Huuuge sand bath (reptile sand) and hideout in it. 8 inch wheel. Orchard grass hay. Tons of wooden toys. Millet sprays. Variety seed mix only 1 or 2 pellets. Ik people will say my cage is too small but Im rly trying my best to upgrade it.

  • @SassyShelly

    for the sinking hides issue.. I ordered on Amazon a pack of wooden dowels, I got some that are 3 inches and some that are I think 5 inches high and I use a non-toxic wood glue to glue them to the bottom of all of my multi chamber hides houses all the heavier things that are in my habitat that way they have legs on them so even when the hamster burrows underneath they won't sink.

    I use one layer of Yesterday’s News cat litter for my mice. On top of that I put a bunch of Clean and Cozy. Works wonderful. Also use the cat litter for my rabbit Nancy Rose. When I have hamsters, I use the Clean and cozy.

    UK here, at first I used the confetti carefresh in my detolf but I wanted to change to a more natural color to make spot cleaning easier, so I ended up getting the Carefresh natural bedding and boy that was a big mistake on my part, I had it in the cage for 2 days, the smell was horrendous, and not only had my hamster started to get a sore on his paw but I also had started to itch constantly, the dust was everywhere.
    Thankfully I got it out in time and it's not caused any further issues, a lot of work getting rid of all the dust though. Now I use something called Fitch First bedding that you can get over here, it's soft, white, dust free, zero smell and is so cost effective, it even comes bales, so if any of you are in the UK give them a look, the people in the shop there are so friendly and will let you see what it's like before you buy, or you can buy small amounts online to test.

    To keep my wheels from toppling over or getting stuck in the bedding I placed a 6"x8" ceramic tile on the cage floor, turned over so the wheel sits on the rougher side and this works perfectly.

  • @dubliners0999
    @dubliners0999 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Oh, and with wheels, I always attach the base to the TOP of my cage or screen top of tank. I use zip ties or twisty ties and after tightening them, cut off the little ends. In that way, my gerbils don't chew the foundation and it never falls over.

    I love using a huge variety of different substrates. My main is generally a mix of 1/3 Aspen & 2/3 Natural paper from Small Pet Select, with teabag bedding for nesting materials. Then I have different areas with megazorb, different aspen, hemp, sand, soil. I also like to see what's on sale in my local small pet shop as they occasionally have in carefresh which I also like to mix in ❤️

    I shred paper and tissue for my hamsters. They seem to like it and I haven’t noticed any problems with it so far, but I have only been using it for about a month. Before I was using megasorb, which was good but quite expensive when I have three hamsters who all use big bunches of bedding.
    Also- I used to use wood shavings because I couldn’t find anything else, then my friend recommended megasorb. Megasorb is good if you don’t have a paper shredder/enough paper to shred. I’m pretty sure you can get like 80 litres of bedding for £13. Although on Facebook marketplace, you can get paper shredders for super cheap, and napkins/notebooks can be bought at Poundland for cheap as well.

    I like to use a hemp, kaytee and hay mix as bedding for my mice as it’s safe, absorbent, makes good burrows and hemp is very affordable.
    At the moment though I can’t find hemp bedding anywhere so I’m using kiln dried, dust extracted pine in its place. It’s definitely better for odour control but doesn’t seem good for burrowing and whilst I haven’t seen any negative affects from it on my mice I will switch back to hemp as soon as it becomes available just to be safe.
    Paper bedding alone is unsuitable for mice as it allows ammonia levels to get high too quickly and mice have super delicate respiratory systems.

    My mouse was allergic to paper bedding so I use aspen. I use the brand LivingWorld and get it a bunch cheaper off Amazon. Not dusty and good sized pieces. I periodically add lots of toilet paper shreds around his cage for his to use in his burrows and hides as proper cushiony bedding. He seems really happy with that!

    I like clean and cozy but I use it in the living room and the dust bothered my rabbit who has a dust allergy.. I tried to shake it out through a sieve like I do the carefresh but it wasn't helping enough. We can not use any of the wood shavings as they have all bothered my sons asthma.. So we are kind of stuck with just one type of bedding. Thanks for the great information I had seen the type of bedding you no longer use and was wondering about it.. you have saved me some money and more importantly some possible injuries to my fur babies and I.

    Very informative for hamster owners. I think it would have been even more helpful to mention that when purchasing paper bedding it may be a good idea to freeze it before use to avoid mites or other bugs during processing, shipping, storage, etc. I also wanted to mention that there is another brand of paper bedding I use called Uber.

    I have used the white pet select bedding and never had a problem with a strong chemical smell. 🤔 you may have just got a bad batch. I also buy directly from their website rather than amazon. I haven't had any issues with the bedding themselves but when some shipping issues happened they had great customer service. (Not sponsored by them lol just a user of it)

    • @saxybaby4486
      @saxybaby4486 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually I've had more issues with a strong/off smell with the All Living Things brand bedding. I've noticed too a couple times the bedding was kinda moist. Returned it right away!

      I haven’t used the white, but I have used the brown one from their actual site for a couple of years and I too have never had an issue with their bedding or anything I ever bought from them (also not sponsored). And same with if had any shipping issues they instantly sorted it free of charge.
      Sounds dangerous the one poor Munchie got. Hope that doesn’t happen to anyone else .

Ill be a first time gerbil owner this year.and I have autism so i hope that my autism won’t bother the gerbils.because I make sounds without realizing it I beep a lot without realizing that I’m doing it it’s apart of who I am since I have autism and I’m 27 1/2 I’ll be 28 on March 29th. • @rachelbruzzese7152
      @rachelbruzzese7152 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kyiacassidy thanks but I’m getting gerbils because I don’t want to get guinea pigs again because I felt like I failed the guinea pigs I rehomed because I wasn’t all there and wasn’t myself after I lost my guinea pig named chip and I ended up rehiring my guinea pigs gizmo and snickers because I couldn’t care for them do to my allergies and because I wasn’t myself so I did what I felt was best for them was to rehome them. And the humane society that I had my mom take them to told my mom I was doing a bad job taking care of the guinea pigs.and that really made me go down hill for a long time Untill now So I desided to get gerbils for a change. I also have autism.

    I am also using paper bedding. However, the one I am using does not come from a commercial brand, but rather homemade. I bought a shredder for 30 €, and it allows me to schreed kitchen tissue paper, which has many benefits over commercial bedding. Among other benefits, it is almost dust-free, it is lighter, it is allergy-free, it is also free of chemicals and nasty smells, it is readily available at all time, it needs far less paper used and wasted compared to commercial brands, easy to clean, allows them to "dive" into the paper directly (no need for them to burrow if they don't want to), and most importantly, it only cost around 3€ to fill up a 40 gallon tank (surprisingly cheap, compared to 20€-30€ I spend each time in the past). However, there is one disadvantage shared with commercial paper bedding: the paper lowers as time passes. In addition to paper, I am investigating into schreeded carton to combine both. I will try to get round to finding out how to get schreeded carton ;)

    I have never used any kind of wood shavings for my hamsters. Whatever wood you are talking about, there's somebody who says that wood is dangerous for whatever reason. Fumes, texture, etc. I'm also afraid that they might get a splinter from wood shavings. Someone donated a big bag of pine to me but I won't use it for my hamsters. So I stick to paper and sometimes mix different brands. I will use some of the pine for my guinea pigs but it is mixed with paper. Wood is ultimately cheaper but I'm more concerned with their safety and comfort than my cost.

    I like the natural clean & cozy over the fluffy one because you can easily see the pee and poo on top of the white bedding. It also smells a lot worse than the natural on in my opinion. Kaytee clean & cozy natural is the best bedding I've found.

    To me this is quite a surprise to hear with Small pet select bedding 0.0 never used the bleached white one, so I personally can’t say with that one what’s it’s like... but the brown bedding version I have never had an issue with in the last 2 years using it (but for my rabbits as their litter) I have a very high sensitive respiratory system and even the softest of scents set me off badly. Yet no issues with the brown bedding, it’s almost completely scentless as well as it’s very soft and fluffy compared to other care fresh I use. (I’m from the uk so I wonder if maybe the texture or type is different to the American one?). Sad to hear you’ve had bad experiences with them on multiple occasions, I hope one day that it will improve because that’s not safe if you can smell the bleach on it. But glad you at least have something that works well for you and your hammies and other small pets.
    Love what you do so much ❤️

    I looked into kiln dryer pine litter for my sugar gliders, but I did not get it because really small on the back of the package near the bottom, it said "Warning! May cause cancer!"

    I had to toss 2 large carefresh white bedding. Smelled like chemicals. The odor was so strong and strange. Called chewy up and the refunded me. Ordered the kaytee natural. So much softer and no odor.

    For whatever reason the carefresh bedding always feels strangely 'wet' and soggy to me. It doesn't mask the urine smell as good either, but you're right it definitely is more dense.

    This is a really helpful video! Especially for new owners or owners that did some more research and are now trying to find an alternative to wood shavings.
    I use rather Kaytee and Carefresh.
    The first batch of Kaytee I got was fine but the second I found plastic and what looked like a shredded rubber glove in, so I went to Carefresh for a couple of years. I tried Kaytee again a few months ago and everything has been fine since.
    I noticed the hamsters seem to prefer Kaytee while the gerbils I had preferred Carefresh. While both are dusty like you said, I found Kaytee too dusty for my rats because they're very very sensitive to those kinda of things so I used a mixture of carefresh and soft 100% paper litter for them and they did great on it 🙂

    I recently added reptile snake aspen to my cage ( the other side is a good 8 inches of paper bedding) seems super soft. Hoping that’s okay!

    The Kaytee Natural is great, no dust, the white is super dusty. I've had both. Kaytee likes to ship out their old stock and it drops the powder out of it like old toilet paper does if it sits around for a year. I will never ever buy their white bleach bedding again. The natural is great, not dusty

    i always use kaytee clean and cozy. every bag of carefresh ive bought was extremely dry, and the last bag had an awful smell so i returned it. i wonder if they just have a crappy manufacturer for my area or something.

    Couldn't you combine a paper bedding then hay to get that firmer bedding? Thats what I do.

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hay is an added material, not a suitable bedding type. It'll be mentioned in the next video talking about nesting materials.

    I was hoping at 11:04 you were going to say the wheel issue was that they burrow all the bedding under the wheel to the point it doesn’t spin lol. My hamster keeps doing that and then freaks out that his wheel won’t move 🤪

    • @MunchiesPlace
      @MunchiesPlace  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I should have mentioned this, it was overlooked. But yes if everything sinks, so does that bloody wheel of theirs. Ha ha.

    I hate when people say Munchie doesn't put enough bedding in the hamster's enclosures. They have to be understanding that she runs a rescue with a lot of animals so she has to try and conserve the bedding, as well as some types of bedding just compacts down easily, making it look like less than originally was put. Please be undetsuanding that whatever you do for your hamster may not work for her, and at the end of the day, she still promotes more bedding :) Maybe Im being too defensive but I just want people to understand this before they go and leave mean comments

    Hey Munchie! I was watching one video and then this one started to play - and I'm really glad I ended up just letting it play because I was about to donate a large bag of Small Pet Select bedding from your Amazon wish list. If you aren't going to be using that brand of bedding anymore could you update your wish list??

    It's a shame that small pet select is gone that far down in quality. I used them all the time when I had guinea pigs. I was thinking about getting some for Midnight my hamster but I guess I won't. I wish I could use some aspen with my bedding since she loves tunneling but she's allergic.
