Mace Windu Reveals Why The Jedi Aren't so Great... - Star Wars Explained

  • Mace Windu was an interesting Jedi Master...while one of the most powerful next to Master Yoda, his ideologies on the force differed from many. He harnessed the darkside within himself and used it for good, Embracing his dark nature, and channeling it into Vaapad. While Mace was not the best people person, he believed the Jedi weren't really all that great, rather, just pragmatic beings. This gives good insight on his reflections of the Jedi and makes you realize that maybe he wasn't all that high and mighty, maybe he just felt that the Jedi were the best of what is around at the moment to keep the peace...
    That is...until Order 66 with Palpatine and Vader.

      Well its hardly news. The Jedi have never represented the absolute moral good, and have always been more pragmatic or neutral good. They even killed many people, or were prepared to countenance, even partake in, the devastation of planets and cultures.
      That's the problem with the concept of 'the greater good'. It is morally ambiguous and can always be used to justify evil.

      Well, they actually did have attachments. Even the supposed 'model' ones. Windu was attached and totally devoted to the Republic. Yoda was attached to the Jedi Order. Obi Wan was similarly attached to the Order and to the concept of Democracy as be believed to be embodied in the Senate, but of course it had long since stopped serving or representing the interests of the great majority of the people of the galaxy.

    • @arronfrazier7873
      @arronfrazier7873 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Guess what! When the Sith got in power in their small numbers of Sidious and Vader and their Empire, they did more death, destruction and chaos to the galaxy than the Jedi every did in a 1000 years since when Bane created the rule of two. They killed billions and planned on killing more to rule and stay ruling. They destroyed Alderan and would have destroy more planets if the first Death Star wasn't destroyed in Stars a New Hope! We can talk about the flaws of the Jedi but they were basically pawns of the Senate and the Republic. If they stayed out of the politics or followed the will of the force, the people would still suffer but not as much under the Sith and their Empire. The movie the Siege with Annette Benning who was with the CIA and Denzel Washington who was with the FBA had a great scene where terrorist had hijacked bus in New York City. Benning character recognized the scene before from the Middle East. She asked Denzel character did they have the shooters in place. She told them out to take them out. Denzel looked at her kind of stunned. Her reply was you rather lose a little or lose alot. Denzel tried to negotiate with them. Minutes later the bus blew up after a few hostages from the bus were let go. I say all this to say, even with the Jedi being un-perfect, the galaxy slowly over time lost a little. However, with the Sith Empire under Palpatine, the galaxy lost alot in just over 20 year reign in power.

      Anakin wanted to become a Master to save Padme..He wanted access to the knowledge the Order allowed only to the Masters. Palpatine knew this, and he knew the Jedi wouldn't allow Anakin to become a Master. He placed him in the council to accomplish that, nothing else.. Just to grow the spite Anakin feels towards the Jedi Council. This is supported by the new Canon, in the New Vader novels, Vader is refused access to the secret archieve by the Custodian Droid, because Anakin wasn't allowed. He of course smashed the droid apart after that, cuz Vader.

    Comparing it to the mcu, specifically some dialogue said in Captain America: Civil war, Vision tells Tony that ever since he came out as iron man there will always be someone wanting to challenge him and the avengers. I think this applies to Star Wars. As long as there are Jedi, there are going to be force wielders who disagree with their way. Hence the need for a balance in the force. Can’t have good without bad! That’s what life is about

    • @WalkerIGP
      @WalkerIGP 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Quite right! That is why you cannot defeat the Sith without destroying the Jedi. If even one Jedi survives, a dark counterpart will eventually rise to challenge them. Kreia in KOTOR 2 realized this, which is why she tried to destroy the Force itself.

REy sees that its time for something new for Millennia of War, with her yellow lightsaber representing a new, balanced order of peace, something the Jedi once were.

      The problem with that is, there were Sith who were the actual race of the Sith. They were who and what they were because of their lust for more power. The Sith aren’t like the Democrats or Republicans, who just exist to counter act the other. Sith were, and are Sith for very selfish reasons that have nothing to do with the opinions or actions of the Jedi. They always try to squash the Jedi because the Jedi get in their way, but then again, they do that to everyone else who gets in their way too not just Jedi. And even if the Sith ceased to be, the Jedi would still find the need to keep peace between the people of the galaxy, which rules out the necessity of the Sith to exist. Either way there is “the force”, and even if every force user refrained from creating orders and groups, there would still be dark and light users who inevitably adopted Sith or Jedi habits simply due to the nature of the force.

    That is what I liked about the prequels. Jedi were made to be saints before the prequels but in reality they had a few problems. It was a little realistic. While the Jedi were good and honorable, they were rather strict and could be somewhat arrogant. I remember in the expanded universe, they dealt with other force orders and those that believed in the light. They did not force convert but still believed their way was superior and would try to convert others and not really tell the Jedi about the other orders so they could discourage others from leaving the order.

    I think the Jedi and Sith represent two extremes. One centered around the "good of the community" and the other the "good of the self".
    Everything the Jedi are, at least at the time of Episode 1+, is built around the "good of the community" and ironically fear. Wielders of the Dark Side can cause great destruction (Exar Kun, Revan, Revan's apprentice, the guy life drained a planet, the guy that literally couldn't die, etc.). So for the good of the community, and perhaps a little fear of becoming that, they put great restrictions on themselves (taking force user children as infants, not teaching force users past a certain age, banning double bladed lightsabers and hyper aggressive styles, having all teachings be done at a central location, etc.).
    The Sith on the other hand go "screw that" and do everything for the self and only the self. Only pursuing what will put them ahead. So much so that they become metaphysically weaker if they try to do things for others. The ironic thing about them is that, with all their focus of personal desire, they can't actually pursue all potential desires (If a Sith wanted to genuinely love someone, or help a community, they couldn't do it without losing raw power. So they can't pursue all wants, but only specific wants.)

      The entire phrase "Only the Sith deal in absolutes" is ironic, contradictory (depending on who says it) and even a bit paradoxical in and of itself
      "Only" is an absolute word, therefore if the sith indeed deal in absolutes, then no jedi would say "never" or "only" lest they be deemed a sith

    I like your phrasing that the Jedi may have been "too attached to nonattachment." This is a consideration I have pondered much over the last couple of years. They became misguided with their tradition of repressing emotions. Passion is an integral part to sentience. Had they learned to work with passion, to accept it as natural, yet keeping their meditations on the Force as a counterbalance, then young Anakin would not have fallen to the dark side.

    I still absolutely adore the idea that Palpatine's major goal was to prepare the galaxy for a Yuuzhang Vong invasion. I know it's far off from canon now, but the idea that Palpatine was trying to accomplish a good goal in evil ways adds a whole new dimension to his character. Not power for the sake of power, but at the end of the day, to prevent the galaxy from being wiped out.
    Mace's take on the dark side being some form of insanity is really interesting. It's like a psychosis you slip into when you don't discipline your use of the force. I've always felt the Jedi motivations are selfish at their core, because while they act altruistically, the reason they do that is to enhance their connection to the force, which they see as paramount above all other things in their lives. Prioritizing one's own "salvation" isn't necessarily rare in even real-world religions, but the selfishness of prioritizing that is supposed to be acknowledged and balanced with good acts. The Jedi don't acknowledge the selfishness, they just say it's all for the sake of good.

      By that point he already had his first in-person kill, something much more visceral and 'real' than a long-distance kill-shot on a spaceship, when he combusted a mook in front of Kenobi.

    To answer your question. Does less Jedi = less Sith? I don't think so. As Jaden Solo pointed out whether or not you fall to the dark side is between you and the force. That the force has its own plan and it can't be stopped. Also gonna grab one from Chirut Imwe. " I do not fear for all of this is as the force wills it"... So no there wouldn't be less. There would be the exact amount that the force wants there to be.
    Second I'd like to address the question about the Jedi, and their fixed position on attachments. After Revan was captured by Bastilla Shan. Brought back to the Republic and turned back to the light. Revan explains how it was his love for Bastilla that brought him back to the light. That in the same way the Sith used fear, anger, and hatred to intensify their connection to the force the Jedi could use happiness, love, and all the emotions on the positive spectrum to intensify their connection to the force. And that if a Jedi fell to the dark because of the loss of an attachment then it was the fault of the Jedi Order for having inadequately trained the person who falls to deal with the loss of said attachment. Had the Jedi not dismissed the teachings of Revan . I believe Anakin may have never fallen.

    Good coverage on this! I would love for D+ to explore Mace in a dedicated series. They should do this with a lot of the Jedi we're familiar with.

    The gray Jedi like the Imperial Knigjts from the EU would have been great examples of balancing power with responsibility. They did not hesitate to get the job done yet at most times they were careful where to draw the line so that they didn't end up becoming corrupted murderous psychopaths
