John Landis on CHATO'S LAND

  • Michael Winner's cynical, violent Vietnam-era western pits stoic lone Apache Charles Bronson against a colorful posse of rapists and murderers led by Jack Palance and a really good cast. "The scream of his victims is the only sound he makes!" was the ad line. TFH Guru John Landis was actually there on the set to provide belated reportage.

What with Landis having worked on Chato's Land, you'd think he'd at least get the basic plot right.
Chato's Land was anything but a "by the numbers" western. It had an incredible cast and a complex plot. The "bad guys", i.e. the posse, were not entirely bad. And Charles Bronson's Chato wasn't entirely good. This is a very underrated western.

You took the words out of my mouth. Did he even mention that it was a posse after Bronson? This film has great insight in to the suede-moralistic stance that the white men took back in the west. Calling Indian's savages and yet acting worse. I think it's a great film and John Landis can only recall what Winner was eating. Jesus.

This movie Chato's Land is one of a number of very underrated westerns ... there are several from all eras, such as Valdes is coming / Open Range / The outlaw Josey Whales / Seraphim Falls / Bone Tomahawk ... ... even the "modern" western The three burials of Melquiades Estrada - which is a western in all but name.

Add 'The Beguiled', from an era that had the courage to be brooding, character-driven and uncompromising.

It IS a great movie, Landis is full of crap. He doesn't even synopsis it right; the rape of his wife doesn't generate the plot, it is the bigotry of the Sheriff right at the start that sets into motion a posse, and the theme is the workings of a posse and the tragedy it generates. It's not 'by the numbers' at all, it has a rare menace to it and strong characterization within the scope that permits, and full of a sense of location so much you can feel and taste the arid desert and share the characters' relentless impending doom. A great study in the escalation of a situation.

It's very clear that when he calls this movie bad he does so with great affection for it. I think what he means is that bottom line, Chato's Land is another of Michael Winner's very weird and very violent revenge movies, that is very enjoyable but is not necessarily a good movie when compared to higher caliber westerns. I can't say this for sure, it's just a thought. In my opinion, it is a good movie, but I can see what he's getting at.

Well, Landis does talk a lot of rubbish (and his movies on the whole aren't that great or original either - and most definitely not worth dying for. Yes, I too find it appalling that Landis got off so lightly, and the late great Vic Morrow lost his life in such a tragic way, during a very unsafe shot for a lame movie - even a great movie wouldn't have been worth risking an actor's and two children's lives).
His summary of the film gives a completely wrong impression as Chato isn't after them after they've raped and killed his wife, but they are after him after he shot the sheriff (who was about to shoot him) and when they find his wife some of them rape her (while others just look away, and one of them even is against it) but Chato manages to rescue her and his young son (but another young Indian man who lived with them was murdered by the posse). And Charles Bronson has a few lines of dialogue (though admittedly not very much, but who was he supposed to talk to, the rubber cactus'?). And though the movie may be a by the numbers Western on one level, there is definitely more to it, especially if you analyse it in the context of the Vietnam war.

The truth is Winner wasn't interested in film making, he was interested in making money. His early British film 'West 11' was made with a modicum of care & 'Hannibal Brooks' is an enjoyable romp but his American output is characterised by a total disregard for camera set up & editing, the abysmal 'Scream For Help' being the nadir. I watched 'Death Wish 2' again recently, god knows why, like its predecessor it is as dull as ditchwater.
