We'll never know, unfortunately. However, I hope people take lessons "for life" from this with more situational awareness.. In the woods.. In the streets... You don't have to sacrifice enjoying where you are at to simply pay attention like you are (should be) looking in your mirrors driving pretty much anywhere.. Man I'm not all that much into true crime but your voice is purely perfection for recounting these stories. Inflection, description, discernment and tone. Everything fits. The dry humor and hilariously well placed sarcasm just puts the bow on top of a beautifully wrapped package.

His brain injury helped bring out his gentler and trusting side. Its amazing that Margaret took the risk of hiking with him as a perfect stranger, but it's likely his endearing manner that won her over, thankfully she wasn't hurt in the process, but it's so sad he ended up being killed. Monsters take people's lives so senselessly. Margaret going on to love and work in nature as her life's path took me by surprise, i figured she may never wander into the woods again; it's great that in spite of it all she was able to be at one with nature and embrace the joy that comes with it. It's so interesting how life works sometimes, out of tragedy she built a life - she may never have followed this path if not for that first hike.
Margaret is truly an inspiration. When I was in my 20s, I was homeless and addicted to drugs. In my 30s, I volunteer at the food bank and help distribute food to people who need it. Life is really wonderful.

I love Joels "naivety". I used to be like that, and as I grew older was very tempted to grow bitter. In my early forties I realized how much I had changed and thought I was going to be a bitter old woman. I decided to see the best in people and love them no matter what. I even termed it "purposeful naivety". God really helped me to do this and at age 60, I still love people. Of course I have been taken advantage of a few times, but that did not deter me. Most people are good at heart.
A fascinating comment. As a younger man, I was once in a bar in Liverpool, England where I got to talking with an old guy for a while. The final thing he said to me before he left was "never give in to the anger" It was a little random and out of the blue but I've never forgotten this and I assure you as time has passed I've come to increasingly understand its meaning and it's served me very well. I hiked a portion of the AT up in the Poconos, the Delaware Water Gap and it was the first time I ever saw a chipmunk, a large (not Florida sized) deer, and a black bear. Oh! And Sunfish! They nibble on your fingers if you dip them in the water! It was seriously one of the most magical experiences of my entire life! When w got to where we set up camp, we had a nap first thing and we woke up to a fairly young black bear sniffing under the vestibule of our tent! Then he sniffed down the length of the tent on my side! We waited unto we could hear him far enough away and got out and watched him walk away. Seriously an amazing time!

That " bad feeling" has never been wrong. I call it getting a bad vibe off someone. The times I didn't listen to it, I was always sorry. I am very thankful to God for the times he got me out of those bad situations. I always urged my children and siblings to pay attention to that.
A similar thing happened in Yorkshire. A man kidnapped a young woman and kept her for ransom. He had done it before and murdered the poor woman. (Later they found out the first woman had seen his face and tried to escape so he murdered the first lady) The second time she spoke to him about her life et cetera and struck up a friendship and he told her that he liked her and that he would let her live. He was caught as he had left his voice at the travel agency from where he'd kidnapped her through. It also happened in the states, a serial killer took a young teenage female to a motel and she said something to him about being his girlfriend and he let her go. I can't remember his name or the others name either.

I've always listened to this voice and it has kept me safe and even if I don't understand why I am getting that feeling, I always listen to it and make my exit as fast as possible.

I have seen too many stories of monsters like this from the US, UK, and Australia, where a man who has repeatedly brutalized women and children gets little to no punishment only to be released and does it again and again and again! But someone(usually a POC) gets caught with a little bit of weed or doesn’t pay their taxes and not just the book is thrown at them, the entire shelf with it!😡 it’s disgusting and maddening beyond words
I've studied the murders on most trails... However, this is the best and most detailed video of it, and many times better than people's writings... Hat's off to you and your channels.. I thru hiked the AT, PCT and many other trails. I am a wilderness EMT, and have worked for the Georgia Appalachian Trail conservancy, in amicalola State Park (where springer mountain is located). I know of, or worked with the people that handles these cases. This is one of, if not the most inaccurate vid on this case I've ever seen. Low gap shelter is no where near springer mountain, the town that they would have been able to hike to is hiawasee ga, not Helen. The map of Rocky knob is the wrong one, there is no Rocky knob shelter in GA. Not then or now. Pretty obvious this guy just regurgitating info from other channels and did no research whatsoever. I suggest when you get back from Mexico, you study trail murders a little bit more brother......

IF you have hiked the AT, and definitely also the PCT, you know crazy people can hit you in most locations, with maybe the exception of the remote / long sections.. My points are simple.. Pay attention.. Be prepared.. Sketchy people on trail, and especially on the streets, stand out if one pays attention.. I guess I need to edit this to say that I was sick on the day I watched this and that all of the unwarranted hate bc of my misinterpretation is really Fucking disgusting. Fix your hearts. The whole time after you mentioned Joel had had a bad head injury as a child I was worried he was going to be the one who harmed Margaret, especially with her lying to her family to convince them to let her go hiking with him... As soon as you said there was someone else they ran into though I knew they would both be the victims but it's so tragic to hear that Joel didn't survive the ordeal. He seemed like a truly beautiful man and I'm glad Margaret not only survived but maintains Joel's legacy in a way by continuing his love of the outdoors he instilled in her. A beautiful and tragic friendship.

It's long been shown that consequence doesn't prevent crime. The death penalty proves that. As does our prison system's reoffense rate. Other nations that concentrate more on treating the person as a way of preventing future crimes have a much better society in regards to both crime and the re-offense rate.

Get your conceal carry if you can. Get a small pistol like a Ruger .380. It fits in one’s pocket. I carry on hikes with my kids. I don’t think it’s cool to carry a pistol, but this is the world we live in.

On the topic of safety on the trail(s)... Day hikers, section hikers, and through hikers all... The most important thing (PERIOD - IMO) is Situational Awareness.. People would be smart to use this in daily life as well, but on the trails, there isn't so much static / noise going on to dull down your senses... If you are new to hiking or just hitting trails in general, go with a friend, or better yet, multiple friends... There actually is safety in numbers.. This is a good example.. Man, woman... Kill the male.. Female is generally more easy to deal with after, especially back then.... Taking on a group of people would take someone who is a trained killer... IF you go it alone ladies, especially in less traveled parts of a trail... Camp off the trail a ways, with nobody watching were you went... Always carry a sat tracker with "SOS" of any variety, EPIRB included = no monthly.... And, I suggest you carry some sort of a weapon for any issue you might have... I'm not telling anyone to break laws or trail rules (there are no rules when you are out in the wilderness alone)... I'm 6'1 215' walking around off trail... I used to be a trained "fighter" in boxing and later what is now considered "MMA".. I seriously can read situations, but I have no shame in saying I "carry" what I feel I might need to "carry" with me... Nobody sees anything, unless I am in Alaska, Montana, etc... Then it may be across my chest in plain sight... Up there, my caution moves more from coward men like this guy, who stand out like a thumb on (AT, PCT - VERY RARE, but they end up there sometimes) to brown bear and moose considerations... Hunting or just trekking deep into alaska.. You will know exactly that I am carrying.... Pretty much anyone you come across off the beaten path, or in cities, out to eat on Friday or Saturday nights will wonder if you don't have a bulge on your ankle or hip, at the very least... I have met some shady people on trails... They generally stand out... Just like this guy did to them.. Or, HIM... "Man" (sorry if I offend anyone) is by far the most dangerous predator walking this planet... That is definitely not to say they are greatly outnumbered by good people, especially on the trail... The AT just has so many opportunities for nogoodniks to access it with ease.. The CDT is absolutely the safest, but you won't see all that many people hiking it... Outside of a firearm or bear bells (don't scare bears or humans 99% of the time), a legit can of bear spray on your pack, on any trail, works exceptionally well for both curious / obnoxious black bears (some brown), and especially humans.. IF you have a problem with a "2 legger" who is getting aggressive.. Right in the eyes and move out fast... It stings bears noses and eyes pretty well, unless they are defending cubs or a cache.... I've heard and seen it being used (video) on humans... Unlike pissed off bears protecting their cubs, human don't handle it well at all... IF too big for comfortable carry, I can't say enough good about FoxLabs 5.3 or FL 1.4 (newer)... My wife carries 1.4 when jogging.. I carry it all the time at work or on the go... /"dear diary"... ;)

Joel had a bad feeling about that monster from the beginning. My heart goes out to his family. Margaret talking about her life, future plans & keeping her cool helped save her life - & I believe she had a guardian Angel watching over her, also.🙏

That " bad feeling" has never been wrong. I call it getting a bad vibe off someone. The times I didn't listen to it, I was always sorry. I am very thankful to God for the times he got me out of those bad situations. I always urged my children and siblings to pay attention to that.
A similar thing happened in Yorkshire. A man kidnapped a young woman and kept her for ransom. He had done it before and murdered the poor woman. (Later they found out the first woman had seen his face and tried to escape so he murdered the first lady) The second time she spoke to him about her life et cetera and struck up a friendship and he told her that he liked her and that he would let her live. He was caught as he had left his voice at the travel agency from where he'd kidnapped her through.
It also happened in the states, a serial killer took a young teenage female to a motel and she said something to him about being his girlfriend and he let her go. I can't remember his name or the others name either.

I've always listened to this voice and it has kept me safe and even if I don't understand why I am getting that feeling, I always listen to it and make my exit as fast as possible.

I have seen too many stories of monsters like this from the US, UK, and Australia, where a man who has repeatedly brutalized women and children gets little to no punishment only to be released and does it again and again and again! But someone(usually a POC) gets caught with a little bit of weed or doesn’t pay their taxes and not just the book is thrown at them, the entire shelf with it!😡 it’s disgusting and maddening beyond words

I've studied the murders on most trails... However, this is the best and most detailed video of it, and many times better than people's writings... Hat's off to you and your channels.. I'll be picking up some swag once I get to an address I can received it... I'm in Mexico right now and they just are not real good about getting you packages pretty much anywhere here unless you spend a fortune getting it almost couriered to you... I thru hiked the AT, PCT and many other trails. I am a wilderness EMT, and have worked for the Georgia Appalachian Trail conservancy, in amicalola State Park (where springer mountain is located). I know of, or worked with the people that handles these cases. This is one of, if not the most inaccurate vid on this case I've ever seen. Low gap shelter is no where near springer mountain, the town that they would have been able to hike to is hiawasee ga, not Helen. The map of Rocky knob is the wrong one, there is no Rocky knob shelter in GA. Not then or now. Pretty obvious this guy just regurgitating info from other channels and did no research whatsoever.
I suggest when you get back from Mexico, you study trail murders a little bit more brother......

IF you have hiked the AT, and definitely also the PCT, you know crazy people can hit you in most locations, with maybe the exception of the remote / long sections.. My points are simple.. Pay attention.. Be prepared.. Sketchy people on trail, and especially on the streets, stand out if one pays attention.. The whole time after you mentioned Joel had had a bad head injury as a child I was worried he was going to be the one who harmed Margaret, especially with her lying to her family to convince them to let her go hiking with him...
As soon as you said there was someone else they ran into though I knew they would both be the victims but it's so tragic to hear that Joel didn't survive the ordeal. He seemed like a truly beautiful man and I'm glad Margaret not only survived but maintains Joel's legacy in a way by continuing his love of the outdoors he instilled in her. A beautiful and tragic friendship.

I’m also stumped by people evading police, causing a car chase, but still turning their blinker on to signal a turn🤭🤭and people who take other’s lives, but want the death penalty taken off the table💙
It's long been shown that consequence doesn't prevent crime. The death penalty proves that. As does our prison system's reoffense rate.
Other nations that concentrate more on treating the person as a way of preventing future crimes have a much better society in regards to both crime and the re-offense rate.

The first time catching a bus home from Texas was funny enough but when you said he started the AT and it happened again, I almost choked laughing. 🤣
I feel so bad for Joel. Having the brain injury but still trying to live his dream. Then to killed only for some gear. I’m thankful Margret was able to go on and have a full , successful life. Hard to believe Ralph was given another chance.

Get your conceal carry if you can. Get a small pistol like a Ruger .380. It fits in one’s pocket. I carry on hikes with my kids. I don’t think it’s cool to carry a pistol, but this is the world we live in.

On the topic of safety on the trail(s)... Day hikers, section hikers, and through hikers all... The most important thing (PERIOD - IMO) is Situational Awareness.. People would be smart to use this in daily life as well, but on the trails, there isn't so much static / noise going on to dull down your senses... If you are new to hiking or just hitting trails in general, go with a friend, or better yet, multiple friends... There actually is safety in numbers.. This is a good example.. Man, woman... Kill the male.. Female is generally more easy to deal with after, especially back then.... Taking on a group of people would take someone who is a trained killer... IF you go it alone ladies, especially in less traveled parts of a trail... Camp off the trail a ways, with nobody watching were you went... Always carry a sat tracker with "SOS" of any variety, EPIRB included = no monthly.... And, I suggest you carry some sort of a weapon for any issue you might have... I'm not telling anyone to break laws or trail rules (there are no rules when you are out in the wilderness alone)... I'm 6'1 215' walking around off trail... I used to be a trained "fighter" in boxing and later what is now considered "MMA".. I seriously can read situations, but I have no shame in saying I "carry" what I feel I might need to "carry" with me... Nobody sees anything, unless I am in Alaska, Montana, etc... Then it may be across my chest in plain sight... Up there, my caution moves more from coward men like this guy, who stand out like a thumb on (AT, PCT - VERY RARE, but they end up there sometimes) to brown bear and moose considerations... Hunting or just trekking deep into alaska.. You will know exactly that I am carrying.... Pretty much anyone you come across off the beaten path, or in cities, out to eat on Friday or Saturday nights will wonder if you don't have a bulge on your ankle or hip, at the very least... I have met some shady people on trails... They generally stand out... Just like this guy did to them.. Or, HIM... "Man" (sorry if I offend anyone) is by far the most dangerous predator walking this planet... That is definitely not to say they are greatly outnumbered by good people, especially on the trail... The AT just has so many opportunities for nogoodniks to access it with ease.. The CDT is absolutely the safest, but you won't see all that many people hiking it... Outside of a firearm or bear bells (don't scare bears or humans 99% of the time), a legit can of bear spray on your pack, on any trail, works exceptionally well for both curious / obnoxious black bears (some brown), and especially humans.. IF you have a problem with a "2 legger" who is getting aggressive.. Right in the eyes and move out fast... It stings bears noses and eyes pretty well, unless they are defending cubs or a cache.... I've heard and seen it being used (video) on humans... Unlike pissed off bears protecting their cubs, human don't handle it well at all... IF too big for comfortable carry, I can't say enough good about FoxLabs 5.3 or FL 1.4 (newer)... My wife carries 1.4 when jogging.. I carry it all the time at work or on the go... /"dear diary"... ;)
