What’s interesting is that this “Hunter” that Samual gave the colt to could be Sam or Dean, traveling back in time to kill a Phoenix. Even though John said Samual built the gun for the hunter, Samual Colt is regarded as a legendary figure at this point, and with hardly any recorded documents of him except his journal that was found way later in the series, most knowledge of him came from oral passing down through time. This means that John’s exposition in this scene could be a misinterpretation, an error born from being retold too many time by others to the point the narrative morphed into something else. I really love how the Phoenix episode showed how it really played out, and how the colt ended up disappearing.
This makes no sense though, considering Samuel Colt *himself* was the hunter he made the gun for.. it’s pretty obvious that Colt had been using the gun to hunt things long before Sam came to visit him and the gun had already been built.. it’s not like Sam went to him with an idea for the gun and he built it- it already had existed and been used way before Sam even shows up in Colt’s time

Ergo, it falls in lie with the legend being what it is, because nothing was confirm until they read the journal and time traveled back to witness and cause the event themselves. And yea, although none of this is cannon until the showrunners put it in and make it up as they go, they did do a good job at making it seem authentic.
IMO what makes the Colt stick out compared to most other Anti Monster weapons in this show is the fact that it was created purely by a Human, I mean just think about it a regular Human created a weapon capable of killing anything in existence except for FIVE beings…

I don't think it makes sense for it to be converted to shoot cartridges, when the gun was brand new. Maybe if later on it had been adapted to shoot special cartridges, it would've made sense. Personally, I don't mind. I think it's better that it shoots cartridges and that it's not a cap and ball revolver, but it still doesn't make sense.
That would’ve actually been a nice weakness of The Colt, reload time, if you manage to (somehow) miss all your shots you better find a safe place to reload cause it’s gonna take a bit.

As for why it kills, the entire frame was made from Macedonian Silver in the convergence of 5 different leylines in the light of hallies comet. The rounds were originally cast iron with a liquid mercury core. In short, the gun was so holy and steeped in magical energies that only 5 things were safe from it.

That's actually true just because loading a Paterson is tedious + getting the caps,power & ball rounds isn't quite as easy as picking up some .45 colt, only collector's or true purists actually fire a colt Paterson with cap & ball most people that want to shoot them regularly just buy a reproduction built for cartridges, however some originals have been converted even though it probably hurts the value. This show when the cheaper route an used a reproduction colt Paterson built for cartridges when it was made.) I think in the show and the time period they say it was built by Samuel Colt it would have been built for cartridges due the old west time place it makes filming easier rather than dean having to pause for 10 minutes to load the colt haha.
@@notme4526 Almost nobody fires Patersons. They're too rare and too expensive. And as far as the Paterson is concerned I have seen no conversions done to make them fire cartridges. The Paterson fired a fairly weak round for its time. The metulurgy of the day just wasn't up to snuff. That's why the next generation of Colt Revolver was so much bigger. The Walker, and then its brother the Dragoon. They're honking bricks, so they can handle a hotter load.... Some of those saw conversions to cartridges, but i've never seen a Paterson converted. They just didn't make enough of them. The gun in Supernatural likely doesn't even have actual firing function.

You mean Sam. Samuel Colt gave the gun to Sam, not Dean. I agree though, it's very possible Sam is the one who the legend is talking about.
