      I had my '98 for 16 years. If it had not been for the rust I'd still have it. Got tired of getting it fixed.

      Hey Davis...its really really late, but the VR6 engine in this review is a 12v, and not a 24v.

      When I was a kid, I wanted a Jetta GLX VR6 so bad! The 2.0L in the GTI was a cruel joke.

    My dad had this one and I took my drivers test in it back in 97. Loved that little car and that VR6 sounded sweet as hell!

    These older VW's are becoming unicorns. I rarely see them on the road anymore and they used to be everywhere.

      There's a million MK4s wherever I look. I daily drive one with 350,000 miles because it works perfectly fine.

    Had an ‘83 1.8 like a go-cart. It was crazy when they stuffed the VR6 in - awesome sound too.

    Hard to believe they offered the 2.slow in a GTI even back then.

    • @chrisdooley6468
      @chrisdooley6468 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Lol ikr. That 2.0 makes less power than the original GTI. That being said the less nose-heavy four cyl had better turn in and less understeer

    • @Mortalomena
      @Mortalomena 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      It was not all about horsepower figures back then. Nowadays it sucks that anything under 300 hp is considered grannymobile even if it handles great.

    • @jdonns2221
      @jdonns2221 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Asiamies I agree with your statement, but I’ve owned a VW with the 2.0. It’s a very reliable engine, but man is it slow. I agree though that you don’t need a million HP. 200-250 is more than adequate for everyday driving even spirited driving.

      good midrange in that motor at least, and a 60 time in 9 seconds is pretty decent, good mpg too

      Joseph Donnelly Isnt it funny, that after almost 20 years of garbage and high hp cars, we finally figured out that what we all wanted, is what auto manufacturers were building in the 90s.

    I own a 1994 GLX VR6 Jetta. IIRC the only MK3, and I believe the last German built (WVW Vin) Jetta imported to the US. Love that VR6, such a great power output for the footprint, when new it would leave much bigger motors (3.1, 3.8L) in the dust, and still gets (to this day) high 20s low 30s MPG. Never owned a GTI but really love the MK3 dual beam headlights more than the US spec MK3 Jetta lights.

    Great video as always Motorweek! Are there any old reviews of the Oldsmobile Firenza? Some relatives of mine had 2 when I was really young, an 1985 woody wagon with a V6 and an 87 coupe with a 4 cylinder and a manual transmission. Haven't seen one in ages and am curious as to what they were like when they were new.

    Pretty sure mk3's only ever had the 12 valve head.
    Had two, a 93' and a 97', both great cars, but slower and less refined than the 04' mk4 V6 4Motion I subsequently had (24v)...
