He's also probably still hurting through the prescription pain meds. That kind of injury is one you get from a life threatening accident, he probably saw his life flash before his eyes and can't forget that sensation.
I biked 3km of the 13km to work, turned around, biked home to get the helmet. Don't go biking without your helmet, when all holes in the Swiss cheese slices lines up, you only need to forget your helmet once. You may think it looks dorky, it's a hassle, but there is nothing more sad than someone ending up completely crippled or dead because of just missing that €20 - 30 piece of plastic and Styrofoam.

The man continues to be an icon by standing up and talking about his accident and taking advantage of it to press the importance of safety, despite the pain. I pulled a muscle once that hurt so bad I swore I broke a rib. That was so fucking annoying just to breathe without pain. Yeah I’ve pulled that muscle too, couldn’t even walk to see that level of trauma on a human body and still be able to walk and talk is like seeing a man get up and walk from being stabbed 3 or 4 times.
i would actually cry if gordon died from anything but old age, and i would even be sad if he died of old age. he is such an icon. he is supposedly a really nice man according to people who have met him irl. a lot of the anger is played up for the camera and its clear he wanted chefs to get better on his TV shows.

The funniest part to me is all the arguments about "fixing" drivers etc and "teaching" them while i've been kind of close getting hit by a car/bus like twice in my life but 100s of times by idiot bikers that never once slows down when passing by, even at small forestry paths 😅😅

The gains are so marginal, you might as well suggest people don't ride at all. fr. apparently some helmets also have some sort of thing to reduce impact damage, like a gap between the shell and the bit that tightens around your head to increase impact time to reduce force, and also the shell can slide to stop you from snapping your neck. edit: also is squishy ish to help with reducing force even more. it can reduce whiplash if you fly off and land on head
Gordon in that video was like watching your parents cry for the first time. He feels like an absolute powerhouse of a man, it’s hard to remember he’s a human and mortal and can very easily get hurt.

My uncle, back before helmets were normal to wear, took a bad fall and all my aunts and uncles gathered around to look at his helmet. It was cracked down the middle. My grandpa made sure they knew that without the helmet that would have been his skull cracked open. They were some of the most consistent helmet-wearers from then on.
I work in a Level 1 Trauma Center and I can say with 100% certainty that helmets save lives. I've seen countless bike accidents where a helmet prevented life threatening injury.
yeah helmets save lives, but infrastructure is even more important. the issue with helmets is not that they dont save lifes, but it has been shown, that it makes bicyclers drive a little bit more risky and.. cars keep less saftey distance when coming from behind. cars are byciclers enemy number one
Saw dashcam footage from an area around here of a car driving over a fallen cyclists head once. Tire full over, up and down. Guy stood up right then and there. Imagine the relief of the driver that this is how the day ended instead of what they had to see and live with otherwise.

There is a drastically smaller barrier to wearing a helmet, than convincing a local or federal government to change/restructure sidewalks and roads. Considering that there have been multiple cases where governments ignore streets that are inherently dangerous to pedestrians and bikers due to how they are designed even after fatalities, it's easier and quicker to convince individuals to do the bare minimum in terms of live saving gear. That said, advocating for the general public to wear helmets when biking should be done in tandem with petitioning to change infrastructure.
One of my buddies cashed out on his helmet and it ended up saving his life in a crash. He made sure to have the suit and helmet before buying the bike and it’s the reason he is walking around today.

I used to work for an insurance company and many motorcyclists died because they didn't wear a helmet.The saddest to me was a couple on a motorcycle who died from getting hit by a drunk driver and left behind five kids :(

I have a story like this, in 2021 my grandpa (Now 70) got into a major bike accident and broke most of his bones, only reason he survived was the helmet he was wearing absorbed most of the initial blow allowing him to make it out after months of surgery.
My kid and I used to bike without wearing a helmet. One day, a lady we were passing by said: "You guys should wear a helmet. I had a friend that died because he fell off the bike at high speed and he wasn't wearing a helmet" I thought "Well, maybe one day we'll get some helmets" and a few days after, we got some helmets and we went on with out lives. Boy, was I glad I got these helmets a few day later when, while biking and carrying something in one hand, I took a fall and landed head first in a concrete pole. I saw that concrete pole coming straight for my head as I was flying off my bike. I had to change the handle on my bike but I was glad I had that helmet on!! It immediately reminded me of that lady and her dead friend. Wear a helmet, it might save your life one day!!
damn i would go back and thank her lmao. ive fallen off my bike a few times, once i even had a scab for over a year, no fucking joke. that time i was holding my mcdonalds bag and a mcflurry going down the hill to my house, and i tried to hit the breaks to go into my driveway but only the left brakes worked decently, so i tried to grab the left break with my right hand and it did not go well, but my food and mcflurry survived so that was good. and also i swear to god its like slow motion every time i fall, but i put my hand out to brace for impact, pulled my food into my abdomen, and put my chin against my chest and i rolled onto my back. i remember every detail because it played out slowly enough i could grasp it. idk bro its weird. another time i was going to the store and i hit a bump (kinda like a ramp tbh) on the sidewalk, i tried to hop it but my back tire hit it and bucked me forward and i lost it, i just landed in pushup position with my bike on my back and some scrapes on my knees. but the chances of walking away from a bike crash are much higher than a car crash, so.
Helmet probably also saved my life too, or at least my brain. Was riding daily to the job, a 30 minutes commute. I was getting very used to the commute, and after some good rain, I passed on a section of the bike path which was concrete covered in a thin wet clay coat. Bike flew under me to the side, head hit the concrete hard, side of the helmet completely shattered. Resulted in a minor concussion.
“I don’t care how short the journey is” also applies to seatbelts. I lost someone in 2023 because they didn’t wear a seatbelt for 1/4 of a mile because when there was a collision they flew out of the car. Stay safe.

They think “well sure that happens somewhat often, but I’ve never seen it happen there’s no way it’d happen to me”. Which, for most people, is correct. You're dead. It's a mental defense mechanism wearing the helmet is an act of accepting mortality and people fear death so some would rather deny it could happen to them at all so they don't have to think about the risks but in reality, it only makes you feel safer but in truth it makes you less safe.
The fact that Gordon got out of the hospital and decided to fight through the pain and share a message about the importance of wearing a helmet while cycling is absolutely phenomenal. Seriously more power to that man.
My dad’s helmet saved his life. He had a skiing accident. Broke both eye sockets, his nose, his front teeth, all of his ribs on the left side, AND ruptured his aorta going into his heart. His skull everywhere the helmet was covering was fine. He was air lifted to two separate hospitals, had emergency surgery for an artificial tube to fix his aorta, and was told he had a 5% chance to live. The doctors told him that if he wasn’t wearing that helmet, he would’ve died on the mountain for sure. My dad was an experienced skier. It can happen to anyone. Wear a helmet.
Michael Schumacher had a skiing accident and hit his head. He's alive, but he will never been the same. His family won't reveal any details in public, but that in itself tells the story. If he had properly recovered, we would have seen more of him.

I ate shit mountain biking not too long ago and hit my head twice rolling down the rocks. I had my helmet so it was no big deal. It left 2 giant dents in the helmet though, those would have been on my head lol

Safety should be a priority, not a choice. Helmets might not be 100% foolproof, but they definitely increase your chances of survival in case of an accident.

I once did some deeper research into biking helmets and their effectiveness, as I was writing a fake debate article for school. Helmets DO often save lives and minimize the risk of serious injury, and they should be a law for adults too, in my opinion. Both for your own sake and to not traumatize friends, family and strangers involved in any incident.
@iclynnx the notion that your own life should be, before anything else, conserved for the consideration and livelihood of other people, even if those others are your own family, is not legislatively viable. You can't dictate morality, as everyone's is different. The only reason seatbelts are mandatory is because without one at high speeds you become a projectile, damaged property you didn't intend to destroy; it's not for your personal safety. Should you wear a seat belt? YES. Should you wear a helmet? YES. To mandate some law has no bounds though when you get people like yourself in charge that clearly think everyone else is too stupid to think for themselves

A helmet literally saved my grandfather two days ago. He landed on his hip and ended up in the hospital and thankfully he’s okay, but he’s gonna be in a wheelchair for a while. When he fell he also landed on his head and the helmet completely absorbed the impact. Helmets 100% save lives.
I remember getting into an argument with my parents when I was 14, so I biked to the park to let off some steam and shoot some basketball. My dad swung by in his car, we shot around for a bit, and then he gave me my helmet that I’d left behind. On the ride back, my brakes malfunctioned on a hill. Broke my arm, got some rough scrapes and a lip puncture…and my helmet had a dent the size of a nickel where my forehead would have hit the ground. I don’t know where I’d be today, 22 years later, if my dad hadn’t done that. Happy Father’s Day to my dad and all parents who look out for the safety of their kids. And please…wear a helmet for the sake of protecting your future self.

I lost a friend a few years back. He wasn't wearing a helmet on ride, fell off and hit his head. He was found around 12 hours later by a dog walker and rushed to hospital. Unfortunately he died in hospital. RIP mate.
Yeah I always wear a helmet because when I was a kid, a neighbor intentionally tried to run me over because her kid and I didn’t get along. The road is on a bluff so one side is a literal drop off as steep as a dozen feet. She ran me off the bluff and I fell and snapped my kid helmet. But lived. Since then I always wear one. A simple kids help (which most are just plastic coated styrofoam) saved my life, then I see no reason why someone wouldn’t wear a helmet of any quality period.
Saw a video of a competitive downhill skater who hit the ground at speeds I dare not assume. His helmet shattered and came off his head, but his actual skull never made contact with the pavement. He stood up, smiling ear to ear, and shouted "I LOVE HELMETS!" Wish I could find that video again.
Yeah in a way it's meant to shatter on impact because (if I understand correctly) that means the energy is being transferred across multiple parts, rather than it all concentrating on a single part which remains on your head, this transferring all that energy to your head. For small impacts it's useful for the helmet to remain intact, but for larger ones, it should shatter. Of course beyond a point even a helmet will do nothing, but accidents of those massive impacts are rare unless you're ramming into a wall at a 100 mph or something.
I highly doubt his helmet "shattered." Helmets don't shatter. They crack/break open at the point(s) of impact. Anything that would cause his helmet to shatter would have shattered his skull as well. Certainly glad the guy was okay, though. This guy arguing that helmets don't provide any additional safety benefit, or are somehow an "inconvenience..." That's just plain delusional.

People really do not want to wear them. I know my husband was saved at least from bad injury if not worse by his helmet in a wreck way back in 2013. But there are people like by Uncle that a helmet for sure saved in his teens but he still will not wear a helmet on his motorcycle in states where it's legal to go without. Some people just won't
at least 10m people use the bycicle each day in my country (netherlands) without helmets, we lose 200 a year to accidents of which 25% where with a car crashing into them so it could help for ~150 people per year. (after corona there was a rise of 25% because of electric bikes called fatbikes that can be unlocked by pressing +- on the dashboard to speeds of 45kmh roughly 20mphs) I don't want this helmet BS because mother nature used to root out the ultra weak now we have the bycicle don't fix what isn't broken! My dad is a radiologist and when my sister and i were kids he was so strict with us wearing helmets even with our razor scooters. He told us when we were older about some of the absolutely horrific head injuries he has seen regularly with a note in the file of “not wearing helmet.” Most of those people either died or had a life long traumatic brain injury. Even now that im an adult living on my own if i mention riding my bike he will always remind me to wear a helmet. I love my dad so much.
My brother was in the ICU brain injury section as a kid due to an infection, but the kid in the bed next to him had been hit by his brother with a golf club (in an accident). Just don't take any chances with head injuries, your brain is the one thing that really struggles to recover from damage and has life-long impacts like you said.
Its insane how if the situation were slightly different we would have been reading headlines about how he died. That bruise is horrific, if you can even call it a bruise at that point. He needs to lay down. I'm so glad he's still alive.
I've been out if work because I got in a wreck on my one wheel and broke my collar bone and crushed my thumb and had to get a bone replacement surgery done. I remember looking in the mirror at myself without a short and my entire chest looked like gordans side. I'm still doing physical therapy and have another month at the earliest before I do an evaluation to see if I can be released to get back to work. I didn't have a helmet on and I came literal inches from going head first into the corner of a concrete mailbox and I bearly scrapped my face and took the blow to my collar bone. Since the broken bones. Would of been allot worse but it opened my eyes up quite a bit
Helmets are absolutely useful in cases with motor collisions. A helmet is the difference between laying on the sidewalk in pain and laying on the road with blood spilling out of your skull after being hit by a car. There is almost no reason not to wear a helmet when cycling.
I was hit by a car on my bike when I was 11, I’m in my 20’s now. I was struck so hard my bike tires folded in half like taco shells. I was not wearing a helmet, and my head was the first thing to hit the ground. I was left with a traumatic brain injury. Not only did it leave me with lifelong symptoms like chronic migraines and loss of balance, but it made me more susceptible to future brain injuries, leading to a concussion in 2020. I had a horse riding accident, I was lucky....mild concussion, but I can still SEE the horse's feet so close to my head and face. I was not wearing a helmet that day, but I did every day after. I wish you good head days and things that make the migraines better.
@@MilleyD17 Agreed, after the accident my mom noticed huge bushes blocking pedestrians view of cars and vice versa, she contacted the city and they cut the bushes down and put up a pedestrian sign. Ideally it wouldn’t take what happened to me for the city to do that
When my mother was young she launched her bike down a hill in her old neighborhood and ran headfirst into a telephone pole. The bicycle helmet she was wearing split in 2. That would’ve been her head if she wasn’t wearing a helmet. So, quite literally, if she wasn’t wearing a helmet I wouldn’t exist.
It's the same principle as cars. _Something_ has to take the impact. Modern cars crunch into tissue paper in a crash while some old cars stayed mostly intact even at higher speeds, but if the car doesn't get destroyed, the force goes through your body instead. If you crash head first into a pole and the helmet breaks, that same force would've otherwise gone through you.

I lost my Dad some years back to a bike accident. His helmet gave me a little extra time to be with him, to say our peace to one another. While his injuries were too great, I'm forever grateful he had a helmet on, and for those last few hours.

Yet another reminder of how unfortunately sudden our lives can change, and how important it is we remind our loved ones of how much we care for them and love them. Don't forget: by the very nature of bicycling, almost any accident you could conceivably find yourself in has a risk of you splitting your skull open on the road or sidewalk. Helmets do not prevent accidents. They help you survive them. Yeah true. Earplugs are also very very important. Managing how long you listen to noises and how loud you listen to it. But some people just don't get it. It's no where near comparable to a life and death situation. But I'm doubtful anyone wants tinnitus and early permanent hearing damage in their lives.
I just noticed that my bicycle helmet had a crack, went to buy a new one the next day. An acquaintance didn't wear one and one morning they found him in a ditch. Someone must have crashed into him the evening before and fled the scene. He survived, but he got some serious brain damage. Had to learn to walk again, still can't work. Lost the memory of the last few years. Can't remember getting married or his son's birth. Please wear a helmet.
A family friend of mine died because he wasn’t wearing a helmet out biking. I have one on hand right now, and confidently say two inches of foam and plastic can make a massive difference between life and death.
Just protect your head. Husband fell from a short height in February, less than 2 meters. Had a large part of his skull removed, brain looked like a mushroom coming out of his head, 2 months in medical facilities including intense in patient rehab, just had a 3d printed/molded skull put in (4 months after accident). He is extremely lucky to have fully recovered. Most with TBI’s struggle daily with a variety of issues from tiredness to being completely disabled. We live in the Netherlands, he’s decided he’s going to start wearing a helmet when he starts cycling again, he doesn’t ever want to go through something like this again.
Good job to him for making it through! I've also had a TBI but I didn't get out so lucky - it compounded on everything else and put me in a wheelchair a decade before i was estimated to need one. It also makes typing "proper" like this hell on my head. I hope he does alright in the future & I hope everything is well.

Dude is lucky to be alive. My brother was just in a bike accident a month and a half ago, and hes still not mentally healed. He got a really bad head injury because he wasnt wearing a helmet. Not only that but the truck that hit him fucked his femur up, he has a rod in his leg, he also has a broken shoulder blade, a tibia and fibia break, and had both his lungs collapse.

I got hit by a truck a few years ago when I was biking and I ran a stop sign. My head hit the hood of the truck hard, leaving a dent, and my helmet cracked. The helmet most definitely saved my life that day, and I always wear one.
My uncle a few years ago had a cycling accident similar to yours I don't know if he had a helmet or not but I know that he lost 5% of his brain because of it.
I had a baby brother who passed away a month before his 13th birthday due to a head injury from a bike accident. He was not wearing his helmet like he should have been. He would have survived if he had been wearing it. Please wear your helmet.
People are so dumb on the internet, wearing a helmet is A MUST whether you’re riding a bicycle or a skateboard. I biked 3km of the 13km to work, turned around, biked home to get the helmet. Don't go biking without your helmet, when all holes in the Swiss cheese slices lines up, you only need to forget your helmet once. You may think it looks dorky, it's a hassle, but there is nothing more sad than someone ending up completely crippled or dead because of just missing that €20 - 30 piece of plastic and Styrofoam.

fr. apparently some helmets also have some sort of thing to reduce impact damage, like a gap between the shell and the bit that tightens around your head to increase impact time to reduce force, and also the shell can slide to stop you from snapping your neck.

My uncle, back before helmets were normal to wear, took a bad fall and all my aunts and uncles gathered around to look at his helmet. It was cracked down the middle. My grandpa made sure they knew that without the helmet that would have been his skull cracked open. They were some of the most consistent helmet-wearers from then on.

I work in a Level 1 Trauma Center and I can say with 100% certainty that helmets save lives. I've seen countless bike accidents where a helmet prevented life threatening injury.
yeah helmets save lives, but infrastructure is even more important. the issue with helmets is not that they dont save lifes, but it has been shown, that it makes bicyclers drive a little bit more risky and.. cars keep less saftey distance when coming from behind.

That may be the case, but think about how easy it is to change infrastructure vs wearing a helmet. There is a drastically smaller barrier to wearing a helmet, than convincing a local or federal government to change/restructure sidewalks and roads. Considering that there have been multiple cases where governments ignore streets that are inherently dangerous to pedestrians and bikers due to how they are designed even after fatalities, it's easier and quicker to convince individuals to do the bare minimum in terms of live saving gear. That said, advocating for the general public to wear helmets when biking should be done in tandem with petitioning to change infrastructure.
One of my buddies cashed out on his helmet and it ended up saving his life in a crash. He made sure to have the suit and helmet before buying the bike and it’s the reason he is walking around today.

I have a story like this, in 2021 my grandpa (Now 70) got into a major bike accident and broke most of his bones, only reason he survived was the helmet he was wearing absorbed most of the initial blow allowing him to make it out after months of surgery.
My kid and I used to bike without wearing a helmet.
One day, a lady we were passing by said:
"You guys should wear a helmet. I had a friend that died because he fell off the bike at high speed and he wasn't wearing a helmet"
I thought "Well, maybe one day we'll get some helmets" and a few days after, we got some helmets and we went on with out lives.
Boy, was I glad I got these helmets a few day later when, while biking and carrying something in one hand, I took a fall and landed head first in a concrete pole.
I saw that concrete pole coming straight for my head as I was flying off my bike.
I had to change the handle on my bike but I was glad I had that helmet on!!
It immediately reminded me of that lady and her dead friend.

damn i would go back and thank her lmao. ive fallen off my bike a few times, once i even had a scab for over a year, no fucking joke. that time i was holding my mcdonalds bag and a mcflurry going down the hill to my house, and i tried to hit the breaks to go into my driveway but only the left brakes worked decently, so i tried to grab the left break with my right hand and it did not go well, but my food and mcflurry survived so that was good. and also i swear to god its like slow motion every time i fall, but i put my hand out to brace for impact, pulled my food into my abdomen, and put my chin against my chest and i rolled onto my back. i remember every detail because it played out slowly enough i could grasp it. idk bro its weird.
another time i was going to the store and i hit a bump (kinda like a ramp tbh) on the sidewalk, i tried to hop it but my back tire hit it and bucked me forward and i lost it, i just landed in pushup position with my bike on my back and some scrapes on my knees.
but the chances of walking away from a bike crash are much higher than a car crash, so.
Helmet probably also saved my life too, or at least my brain. Was riding daily to the job, a 30 minutes commute. I was getting very used to the commute, and after some good rain, I passed on a section of the bike path which was concrete covered in a thin wet clay coat. Bike flew under me to the side, head hit the concrete hard, side of the helmet completely shattered. Resulted in a minor concussion.

My dad’s helmet saved his life. He had a skiing accident. Broke both eye sockets, his nose, his front teeth, all of his ribs on the left side, AND ruptured his aorta going into his heart. His skull everywhere the helmet was covering was fine. He was air lifted to two separate hospitals, had emergency surgery for an artificial tube to fix his aorta, and was told he had a 5% chance to live. The doctors told him that if he wasn’t wearing that helmet, he would’ve died on the mountain for sure. My dad was an experienced skier. It can happen to anyone. Wear a helmet.

I once did some deeper research into biking helmets and their effectiveness, as I was writing a fake debate article for school. Helmets DO often save lives and minimize the risk of serious injury, and they should be a law for adults too, in my opinion. Both for your own sake and to not traumatize friends, family and strangers involved in any incident.

A helmet literally saved my grandfather two days ago. He landed on his hip and ended up in the hospital and thankfully he’s okay, but he’s gonna be in a wheelchair for a while. When he fell he also landed on his head and the helmet completely absorbed the impact. Helmets 100% save lives.

I remember getting into an argument with my parents when I was 14, so I biked to the park to let off some steam and shoot some basketball. My dad swung by in his car, we shot around for a bit, and then he gave me my helmet that I’d left behind. On the ride back, my brakes malfunctioned on a hill. Broke my arm, got some rough scrapes and a lip puncture…and my helmet had a dent the size of a nickel where my forehead would have hit the ground.
I don’t know where I’d be today, 22 years later, if my dad hadn’t done that. Happy Father’s Day to my dad and all parents who look out for the safety of their kids. And please…wear a helmet for the sake of protecting your future self.

Yeah I always wear a helmet because when I was a kid, a neighbor intentionally tried to run me over because her kid and I didn’t get along. The road is on a bluff so one side is a literal drop off as steep as a dozen feet. She ran me off the bluff and I fell and snapped my kid helmet. But lived. Since then I always wear one. A simple kids help (which most are just plastic coated styrofoam) saved my life, then I see no reason why someone wouldn’t wear a helmet of any quality period.

Saw a video of a competitive downhill skater who hit the ground at speeds I dare not assume. His helmet shattered and came off his head, but his actual skull never made contact with the pavement.

Yeah in a way it's meant to shatter on impact because (if I understand correctly) that means the energy is being transferred across multiple parts, rather than it all concentrating on a single part which remains on your head, this transferring all that energy to your head.
For small impacts it's useful for the helmet to remain intact, but for larger ones, it should shatter. Of course beyond a point even a helmet will do nothing, but accidents of those massive impacts are rare unless you're ramming into a wall at a 100 mph or something.

My dad is a radiologist and when my sister and i were kids he was so strict with us wearing helmets even with our razor scooters. He told us when we were older about some of the absolutely horrific head injuries he has seen regularly with a note in the file of “not wearing helmet.” Most of those people either died or had a life long traumatic brain injury.
Even now that im an adult living on my own if i mention riding my bike he will always remind me to wear a helmet. I love my dad so much.
That reminds me of seeing somewhere that nurses don't drive with hair clips in.....as they've seen so many embedded in people's skulls 😰
My brother was in the ICU brain injury section as a kid due to an infection, but the kid in the bed next to him had been hit by his brother with a golf club (in an accident). Just don't take any chances with head injuries, your brain is the one thing that really struggles to recover from damage and has life-long impacts like you said.

I've been out if work because I got in a wreck on my one wheel and broke my collar bone and crushed my thumb and had to get a bone replacement surgery done. I remember looking in the mirror at myself without a short and my entire chest looked like gordans side. I'm still doing physical therapy and have another month at the earliest before I do an evaluation to see if I can be released to get back to work. I didn't have a helmet on and I came literal inches from going head first into the corner of a concrete mailbox and I bearly scrapped my face and took the blow to my collar bone. Since the broken bones. Would of been allot worse but it opened my eyes up quite a bit

Helmets are absolutely useful in cases with motor collisions. A helmet is the difference between laying on the sidewalk in pain and laying on the road with blood spilling out of your skull after being hit by a car. There is almost no reason not to wear a helmet when cycling.

I was hit by a car on my bike when I was 11, I’m in my 20’s now. I was struck so hard my bike tires folded in half like taco shells. I was not wearing a helmet, and my head was the first thing to hit the ground. I was left with a traumatic brain injury. Not only did it leave me with lifelong symptoms like chronic migraines and loss of balance, but it made me more susceptible to future brain injuries, leading to a concussion in 2020. With all that being said, I was still extremely lucky. Please wear a helmet.

It's the same principle as cars. _Something_ has to take the impact. Modern cars crunch into tissue paper in a crash while some old cars stayed mostly intact even at higher speeds, but if the car doesn't get destroyed, the force goes through your body instead. If you crash head first into a pole and the helmet breaks, that same force would've otherwise gone through you.

Just protect your head. Husband fell from a short height in February, less than 2 meters. Had a large part of his skull removed, brain looked like a mushroom coming out of his head, 2 months in medical facilities including intense in patient rehab, just had a 3d printed/molded skull put in (4 months after accident). He is extremely lucky to have fully recovered. Most with TBI’s struggle daily with a variety of issues from tiredness to being completely disabled. We live in the Netherlands, he’s decided he’s going to start wearing a helmet when he starts cycling again, he doesn’t ever want to go through something like this again.

Dude is lucky to be alive. My brother was just in a bike accident a month and a half ago, and hes still not mentally healed. He got a really bad head injury because he wasnt wearing a helmet. Not only that but the truck that hit him fucked his femur up, he has a rod in his leg, he also has a broken shoulder blade, a tibia and fibia break, and had both his lungs collapse.

I got hit by a truck a few years ago when I was biking and I ran a stop sign. My head hit the hood of the truck hard, leaving a dent, and my helmet cracked. The helmet most definitely saved my life that day, and I always wear one.

My uncle a few years ago had a cycling accident similar to yours I don't know if he had a helmet or not but I know that he lost 5% of his brain because of it.
Just remember if your helmet breaks, it did its job, and your head hopefully didn’t break.

I had a baby brother who passed away a month before his 13th birthday due to a head injury from a bike accident. He was not wearing his helmet like he should have been. He would have survived if he had been wearing it. Please wear your helmet.

People are so dumb on the internet, wearing a helmet is A MUST whether you’re riding a bicycle or a skateboard. It doesn’t make you cool not wearing them you’re just risking your life and could possibly get a brain damage because you didn’t wear a helmet and not only that NO SHlT you need to follow other rules (ex. staying on your lane) but with all that you should ALSO WEAR HELMETS AND SHOULDER PADS. It’s basic knowledge nobody here is saying it will solve all your problems by just wearing a helmet you just need to be safe and follow the rules.
Link (from Rhett and Link) also was recently in a really bad cycling accident in which he ALSO admitted that his helmet was the only reason he is alive today…

My cousin's son was thrown over the front of his electric bike when it stalled out, landed on his head, which split his helmet in half. He got scraped up pretty badly but his worst injury was a broken elbow. Without the helmet, he wouldn't have survived.
