    19:51 I 100% believe he hadn’t heard Rick Astley before, because of the reasons below, but they are very similar.
    That similar sound is because Robo’s theme uses the 4 chord loop progression the Japanese call “royal road”, which more accurately translates as “the easy way”. It’s an EXTREMELY popular progression for Japanese pop music, especially in anime opening and closing themes.
    NGGYU by Astley uses *basically* the same progression, it just changes a bass note under one of the chords (sort of; fellow music theory nerds could disagree). That said, the melody of Robo’s theme also has some close similarities to the opening keyboard part in NGGYU.
    They may also be in the same key or close to it, which really helps the ear hear the similarity in the progression, but I can’t check to confirm rn.
    Anyway, my bigger point here is that this all means it’s super easy to make an arrangement of certain popular anime themes, and then rickroll right in the middle and it sound like it’s supposed to be that way. 😂😂😂😂

    This Spekkio fight changes as you level up your characters. I don't remember the thresholds, but each checkpoint jumps his difficulty. There's even one where you level up very little, and you fight a small frog!

    Fun fact regarding robo's theme sounding a lot like being rick rolled, the songs are actually using different chord progressions, robo's theme uses the IV-V-iii-vi progression (an EXTREMELY popular progression in japan), and Never Gonna Give You Up changed the first chord from IV to ii7.
    For the less musically inclined, yet interested:
    This means instead of using a happy version of the 4th chord to start things off, Rick Astley used the 2nd chord with a 7th note added to make it sound sad. This is still similar because the change is only one note off of the first progression used in robo's theme.
    These are two similar sounding progressions but what REALLY does it for people is the placement of the chords in both songs follows nearly the exact same rhythm over the most comparable sections. So even though you have two songs using different chords, the rhythm is enough for our brains to overwrite this and other small differences and hear them as the same, while other songs using the same progressions sound more distinct.

    For gameplay logics, it's really cool that they have a story element of why only three party members can be there during battle
    For the characters tho, that's horrifying, to think that you're just stuck there...waiting for your friends to hopefully, maybe pick you at some point...

    Spekkio can be fought repeatedly, and his power increases as the party's increases. Each "version" of Spekkio gives different rewards (though I believe only once per version), usually including one or more stat-boosting Tabs, so he's great for powering up your team. He is, of course, a very tough fight (as Dan demonstrated), no matter what version you face.

  • @timothymclean
    @timothymclean ปีที่แล้ว +14

    1:40: This kind of thing is _well_ above Robo's pay grade. Assuming this is supposed to happen when you activate emergency power.
    4:45: It's obviously a side effect of the real-time, turn-based, and positioning elements of this battle system crashing together into a mangled hulk, but it also contributes a lot to the cartoony (affectionate) tone of most battles.
    9:30: DS translation note: The DS version says "Four or more beings _from different times,"_ which makes it feel a little less arbitrary. It's still arbitrary, to be clear, especially since there's not much diegetic reason for only one group to go out at a time. (If they need another Gate Key...well, they have the Key's inventor right here, and they're about one quest from getting her back to her lab.) But it's ultimately just a handwave to justify a party size of three, so whatever I guess.
    12:40: So...Lucca throwing fire, Marle glowing and healing people, and Crono making gusts of wind with his sword _aren't_ magic?
    21:05: The DS translation calls them the Mystics "Fiends," which makes more sense as a thing for the kingdom of Guardia to call them, but a bit less sense as a thing for the Mystics to call themselves.
    0:50: Pay attention to the text box on the bottom. The Plasma Gun is the first of the nowhere near enough equipment that gives more than an increasing bonus to attack/defense. The Plasma Gun's special bonus is particularly relevant in this time period...
    1:55: It's primitive by today's standards, but it's still impressive how the Chrono Trigger team found every way to stage a cinematic cutscene using the limited capabilities of their engine and hardware.
    3:33: And sometimes it's goofy. But it's mostly impressive.
    6:50: If robot repair is anything like brain surgery, talking is probably a good idea. Lets you know if you fried his positronic brain or whatever.
    7:10: DS Translation note: "What do you want to do?" is almost identical to "What are you going to do?", from a semantic perspective, but one works a bit better for this kind of scene. Word choice is important!
    9:40: How does "recently" work in a place and time where anyone is dumped when things go haywire?
    12:10: Fun fact: If you show up to the End of Time without leveling Crono past level 9, you get another form that's almost impossible to see under normal conditions. The drops for each Spekkio form are awarded separately, so if you speedrun it here (or just knock Crono unconscious for most group battles), you can get one more magic capsule than otherwise.
    13:20: This is the most early-Dragon-Ball moment in the entire game. It's so dumb. I love it.
    19:40: Yeah, it's not a Kenji Yamamoto situation. (This is another Dragon Ball thing.)
    24:20: Translation note: The other translation is something like "You think I'm gonna charge the going rate for a human?" Which makes it a bit clearer that the shopkeeper is charging you extra because you're a human (and/or because you just attacked him and his employer).

      @@thaddeusgenhelm8979 The best excuse for Aura I could consider is that it's her Aura, from her being a tomboy fighter type, but that makes less sense when considering she is the only one that has it, it only manifests as healing, it isn't related to her element so it shouldn't be innate by the rules defined in this episode, and and fighting auras typically aren't seen as something that you can just cast out willy nilly to heal others.
      The only other excuses I could give is it being either some kind of blood trait that we have no other evidence for, or it's a residual power granted to her by her pendant that clearly has some kind of power in it if it can mess with space and time -and other things.-

    2 Things you don`t think about when you`re a little baby playing video games on a CRT while sitting cross-legged on the floor:
    MAYBE SPOILERS FOR THE SECOND ONE
    Is Robo sentient? He decided he wants to join Chrono after being told the party will try to "save the world". Why would a machine forgo self preservation for such a subjective goal?
    "All lost travelers in time wind up here!"
    First of all, that's a lie. Blue-haired character doesn't end up here.
    Secondly, WHO THE HELL ELSE IS TRAVELING THROUGH TIME?!?!?!?!?!

    • @thaddeusgenhelm8979
      @thaddeusgenhelm8979 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Based on his behavioral patterns, Robo is definitely sentient. Especially given things that happen laaaater.
      To be honest, I'd really assume that, to a young kid playing a videogame, the reason you don't think about whether or not Robo is sentient is because it's *obvious* to you that the robot that joins your party is a sentient one, even if consider that non-sentient ones exist. It's just how stories and media tend to go, and there's no reason for you to second guess that yet =P

    A tip for new players: Sell your old gear! With the exception of a few late-game items that have unique properties, there isn't any reason to hang on to weaker weapons and armor. Sell it all. Do that and there shouldn't be any need to ever grind for money. (But if you do need to grind for money, the best way can be found in the distant past.)
    That being said, I do actually hang onto one weak helmet and suit of armor to facilitate swapping good gear onto active party members. You can't just take things off of characters without swapping something else in, so having an extra helm and suit of armor lets you move your good stuff to the characters you're currently using.

    • @GuruMeditationError
      @GuruMeditationError ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The method of grinding for money (spoilers):
      In the distant past there is a hunting range where you can fight weak monsters for petals, fangs, feathers, and horns. These can be traded for some quite good gear at the Ioka Village. Stock up on trading items, trade for equipment, sell the equipment. Rinse and repeat.

    @Nickle_King ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Spoilers for those who haven't played the game.
    On the note of the Chrono lore, and if there should have been sequels, the fact that there is a time gate going all the way back to before Lavos came to the planet is really interesting to me. All the other time gates are moments that have relevance to Schala, but that one gate is just before Lavos arrived. No personal relevance to Schala. Sure, you could say it was Schala and she made that gate to show where Lavos came from, but that's weak and incomplete because of all the other gates. Because something interesting is that gate is the most important one because that gate leads to the gate to Schala.
    The reason I bring this up is because there is SOMETHING there. Some story to tell. But, instead, we got a non-sequel in Chrono Cross. So, yes. They should have made a sequel. And, heck. Even now, they should remake the original to tell the same story, but with updated, fun mechanics and see where it can go. It would still be great.
    buuut, then again this is current day SquareEnix, so the game would be turned into an overblown, point blank fireworks display in a dark room so probably better they don't touch it.

      First off, I don't think that's true. The effects of the Gate Key are pretty vague, but Lucca makes it sound like there are potential consequences to using Gates without stabilizing them, and there's no indication that the pillar-gates are more stable. And considering that this game asks me to accept that anatomically modern humans lived 65 million years ago, that lasers are functionally equivalent to dark magic, and that a continents-spanning kingdom is composed of three villages and some woods, the Gate Key thing seems pretty trivial.
      But it doesn't explain why they can't do the corn/chicken/fox shuffle with their one Gate Key. Or, for that matter, why Lucca can't make a second one. (Though trying to coordinate their two teams when they're in different times would be a rather extreme logistical challenge...)
