Loreena McKennitt has a lovely song called "All Soul's Night" that is about bonfires for Samhain and the spiritualism of this time of year. Her adaptation of Yeats's "The Stolen Child" is great, too, particularly the live version.
I really must gen up on Yeats...my teens were dominated by the undertones, thin Lizzy, Flock of Seagulls and Tears for fears and Seamus Heaney's writing..bit biased as a Derry man...
The egg in the water fortune telling was something i saw when i was a kid in mexico. It was done on new years eve to see what the new year might bring.
I'll be leaving a place setting for my elderly cat, who passed away recently. I don't really believe in ghosts or spirits, but if any creature has them it'll be cats!
Well done sir, the Bard of the ages...what a well researched and told tale...all that was missing was a warm fire and a few drams...but no dramas...as a well known Irishman ( Dave Allen) was wont to say...may your God go with you...keep well and safe..E
Good explanation. My favorite so far, of this topic. Clear and meaningful original motives, and clear about how the early practices became precedents or foundations for today's Halloween, which I wondered about. Thank you.
Liath, you think you could do a video on how various European Germano-Norse (and eventually a good chunk of the known world) ended up adopting this Celtic Holiday?
Flipping heck. Is this why I’m going mental. Just your bog standard boring people here. I’m a Gael. Part pict. Can’t tan for the life of me. It’s Samhain here. It’s driving me mental.

now i know the feel of Samhain from the ages. it’s not just a dress-up time. everything means something. the joining of our loves who passed on are really there. lots of candles will have to do for a fire (as i live in New York). but will leave milk by my door. maybe even make a gourd jack o’ lantern. thanks again. :) 🌾🍁🌻🍏🧖🏻♀️🧖🏽🎃
Well, I guess I know what I'm doing Sunday night. A bowl of porridge on my balcony and at my front door, and a dram of Scotch, a dram of Irish, and a bowl of milk for the Daoine and Cat Sith. :-)
I'm Christian but the truth I know about samahin (soween) it was just a way for them to honor their ancestors and loved ones and unfortunately over the centuries became demonized its sad to me it is no different than Dia los Muertos (day of the dead) that mexicans/aztecs celebrate and I also honor all souls day too the Christianized version

Crazy how similar a norther Irish accent and your Scottish accent is. You can really hear the crossover.

Jon Solo did a video covering the background and history of jack-o'-lanterns.

Awesome.
Gonna go find some cow bones to throw in a fire for Samhain.

Great video as always!
I would love to know the outcome of some of the foretold stories!
Like, did the journey actually end sad? Etc.
Some of the videos I have planned for the future will mention or relate to these traditions.
Sounds like you are saying sauron instead of Samhain.
