J.M.K.E. - Tere perestroika

- Lyrics in english:
Welcome Perestroika
The sky is clear, the sea is blue.
Now everybody can breathe free air.
The hammer and the sickle are not
hurting anybody anymore.
They are talking about hard work. (not sure)
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
One country is escaping dictatorship.
Welcome Perestroika. Welcome nirvana.
The red flag is not so scary anymore.
A tractor is plowing a field, the land is bearing fruit
"Rahva Hääl" (Estonian newspaper) is not lying anymore.
Its mouth is not smoking with lies. (literally)
Prohibited movies are now showing at the movie theatres.
Prohibited bands are now allowed to perform.
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
It is great to escape dictatorship.
Welcome Perestroika, welcome freedom.
Everybody is singing patriotic songs.
Police (miilits-older days) uniforms are not sickening anymore.
Police force is worth praise.
Police and punk rocker are friendly now,
greeting each other with a handshake.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa
Our country belongs to you and me now.
There is going to be a big anniversary every year.
People are partying: juhhei auu
There is not going to be an empty well in Virumaa.
There is going to be plane landing in front of a mausoleum.
There is no denying: democracy is big.
When adoring democracy, people's mouths remain open.
Welcome Perestroika into my homeland.
I'm welcoming you as long as I can.
Welcome Perestroika, democracy
Welcome Peresroika, give me five.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa.
Welcome Perestroika, taaderiidaraa
Welcome Perestroika, welcome Perestroika.
Welcome Perestroika, give me five.

The best Estonian band and song, this version should be the national anthem
Tony Arcieri lol no they are awesome but an anthem must be solemn.
The band JMKE is an Estonian band. They sing in Estionian. This is taken from a Finnish TV programme Ajankohtainen Kakkonen, which was aired over 20 years ago, that's why it has Finnish subtitles.
This was THE anthem of the resistance & revolution against Soviet Union in the late 1980's... Such a classic song and classic message!
florenna Not that much against the USSR but against dictatorship and for independence. Either that or either you do not know what is perestroika.
So when they sing about the hammer and sickle not striking anyone down any more, it's not particularly against the USSR? Not too many other dictatorships to sing against.
Carles Manrich i Peres How dense must you be to not get that the lyrics are sarcastic?
@@breizhcatalonia1993 of course its anti soviet song
With lyrics like "Police and punk rocker are friendly now, greeting each other with a handshake." I'm pretty sure it's just a sarcasm about dreams of the bright future without USSR
Playing this on the national TV of Finland was quite a radical thing too...
How so? This won a competition on Estonian TV in 1988, before the song was recorded and before this video recording.
Gorbachev was the one who put Perestroika in motion, he gave it a green light because he understood that he could not keep to country intact with totalitarianism. It failed either way, thankfully.
Häh?
@@incumbentvinyl9291 Well, in YYA Finland it was a very radical song to play - I mean it was pretty obvious it was not praising but mocking perestroika and glasnost.
@@qwineth It wasn't.
This had already played legally and was on TV in the Estonian SSR within the Soviet Union. This wasn't a secret for the censors. Alternative music, including punk and new wave was was rather commonplace in the late 1980's, even in the USSR.
Nothing radical about it. Even Soviets would never have embarrassed themselves making a scene about this being on TV, when proof was readily available and common knowledge that this was present and shown in the media in the Soviet Union. They would never have embarrassed themselves by even bringing it up. Zero risk and nothing radical concerning this.
@@incumbentvinyl9291 Finland was different - it really was a remarkable occasion
one of the best and most influential punk albums of all time
Simply no, that's a lie.
@@incumbentvinyl9291This song made the USSR collapse. Can't beat that.
@@perkl1234 I enjoyed the sarcasm.
When I first time heard it from radio I thought it is finnish band - probably because of their slang and somewhat different intonation. But then I saw it on tv and discovered it is estonian band. My first thought was - "When they are put to jail?" But nevertheless I was so proud that our guys can manage to make so good and revolutionary music. Strange that after that song, Punk came out very quickly. Few months later there was thousands of Punkers.
ReinOwader but you wanted them to go to jail first time you listened them? :D
No. In the Soviet Union criticism against the government rule was illegal and you could get to jail for it
Thanks a bunch for posting this! It's the best Estonian song ever. Classic stuff. I can't believe it's been 20 years ...
Vittu rispektit viron pojille kun ovat uskaltaneet tehdä tämän biisin!! Hyvä ja asialline biisi!
I saw this live on Finnish tv back then. , must have been 1989. One day, I will sing it in karaoke on Tallink ferry on the national day of Estonia.
Remember that classic! Brings back the fresh and happy spirit of the time in the end of 80's in the USSR. Go Estonians!
CHEERS FROM CHILE!!!! I GROW UP WITH J.M.K.E. !!!!THE SAME HERE DICTATOR SHIT!!!!TEREPERESTROIKAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!BEERS UPPP!!!!
Greetings from Finland!
I read about this band at the Eesti Kunstimuuseum in Tallinn. It took too long to find there music. They are awesome!
Eventho i don't have a clue what they say except of perestrojka, i like this song.
Perkeleen hyvä laulu!
Our history teacher was playing us Soviet pop music while we were doing exercises, our subject being the fall of the Soviet Union. I asked him to put tere perestroika on as well, he was excited and asked "how did you know I was putting that on next?" He's an old punk. A wonderful teacher.
Every time I hear this I immediately get an overwhelming urge to get to the barricades and rebel against the government :D
My limited Finnish isn't helping me much with the subtitles, so thanks for the translation! :)
JMKE is the best!!! To moja ulubiona estońska kapela!!!
During that time no one ever played live on TV. You can see that, when the bass player thinks the song ends a bit earlier but realizes, oh shit, I have to play this part one more time, but meanwhile you can still hear the bassline
Estonian Sovetik Punk rock
Artur Rehi brought me here.
they were one of the(for mostly younger ones) most important part of Singing Revolution....
por este medio konozko esta banda.... ak en este pais de lokos tambien hacemos nuestro ruido y adaptamos el punk a nuestra realidad violenta como ella sola..... pero igual la pasamos muy bien.... from drogota Colombia

Tere Eestimaa Vabaduse! Hee, Jeah..! =D
greetings from brasil
"Everyone's hands are trembling and mood is tense
Perestroikamania has seized the big country
Look and you'll see the system is the same
Perestroika is just another campaign"
- "Lahendus on kaos" bonus track from the same album "Tere perestroika" is from. There's lots of sarcastic remarks towards Perestroika in the album, so I guess this song is no different.
Külmale maale is one of the best punk albums of all time, btw
Jeaahh.. Virumaa vabaduse head..! Gee, hea hea hee..!! )=D

@verttu007 JMKE oli kutsuttu Suomalaiseen poliittiseen ajankohtaisohjelmaan soittamaan, mielestäni toisin kun eräs sanoo niin A-studioon.

Fantastic song! good lyrics & fuckin pogo.
i bought one of their LP's in a second hand store in norway recently. it was actually signed by all band members, they were kind of "famous" in Estonia?
klass .ica ;)
most awesome awesomenes
genialne! pomimo, że nie rozumiem tekstu, wpada w ucho ;d greetings from Poland!
still have this song on LP... 2 copies actually... on Eesti POP series(year 88?). but cant remember the volume number atm....
fyi, this song is 100% sarcastic which may not come across so well in translation but if you read other lyrics by Tamme from this era it will be pretty clear. tamme saw perestroika as another superficial politbyro campaign to brush up their image while the system stayed the same and indeed in 1989 soviet soldiers murdered peaceful protesters in tbilisi, georgia with shovels and gas (the song tbilisi tänavad is about this incident) so pessimism about Gorbachev's policies was nothing too uncommon
Well, if that's true then he was totally wrong ;) i.e. "tamme saw perestroika as another superficial politbyro campaign to brush up their image while the system stayed the same" - *nothing* stayed the same after that, the whole system collapsed and Estonia, among others, gained independence...
@TZukiMrAxlson Yes, it was Ajankohtainen Kakkonen. We watched it, I remember clearly.
I think it must be something like 1988 or 1989. Quite something, such a great song and performance!
Who from Arthur rehi?
The best.
@IsaiasWimara
yup, they're in action :D
Greetings from Estonia

Pako Neuvostoliitosta Movie
Zajebisty punk :D
yes they are in action! viva la punk!
Dinosaurock III vuonna 1989 (21.-23.7.1989) teki lähtemättömän vaikutuksen. Villu ja koko tuonaikainen, yllättävän laaja skaala eestiläisestä punkista (mm. Vennaskond) on ollut lähellä sydäntäni tuosta hetkestä. Ma armastan.
hell ya guys this is awesome :P what about sum concert in central europe? :P :D
