Salernitana came within minutes of a momentous win against Juventus last weekend, only to be undone by a stoppage time goal that consigned them to a 1-1 draw. Sitting on just 16 points, they have only two matches remaining to get two points and surpass the lowest points tally in a Serie A campaign set by Chievo (17) in the 2018/19 season. Avoiding that ignominy would at least ease some pain of their relegation to Serie B, although their 19-game winless run (D4, L15) doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.
Playing at Stadio Arechi isn’t likely to improve morale either, as the hosts have won just a solitary point across the last nine home games (D1, L8). Four of those eight defeats have come by a 2-1 scoreline, and while three came despite scoring first, that’s perhaps not a great surprise given Salernitana had the league’s worst defensive record (GA 76) after 36 games this season.
Hellas Verona conceded twice in the last 15 minutes last weekend to lose 2-1 to Torino. The defeat saw them miss a chance to steer clear of danger as they come into this round only two points above the relegation zone, and with a season finale against champions Inter Milan looming large, will be keen to do everything they can to wrap up their safety this round to avoid an anxious final day.
Hitting the road has at least yielded results for Verona lately, as they’ve avoided defeat in four of their last six trips (W1, D3). That should give some confidence that the visitors can avoid a defeat here, as an end to that run would see them lose both H2Hs of a league campaign for the first time since 1997/98, having gone down 1-0 in the reverse fixture.
Players to watch: Chukwubuikem Ikwuemesi could have an early impact for Salernitana, having scored the match opener with each of his three goals this season, all within the first 30 minutes. Verona’s Michael Folorunsho could look to upstage him early on, as his last two league goals have also been match openers and within the first 20 minutes.
Hot stat: Salernitana conceded exactly two goals in nine of their last 11 home games.
