@@TheNotaRubicon A very long time ago Midland actually did sell FRS radios with channels that did not align with other radios. You would have to go back to a radio 30 years old or older to find one. Now that the FCC has specified frequencies for each channel you should not have that issue now when using modern type accepted radios. Somebody seems to have held a grudge for a very long time. I'm impressed.
For anyone who is curious about the power output, according to the RF test report on the FCC website, this radio (at least the one tested when getting FCC approval) has 1.5 watts of effective radiated power at high power output. I attempted to post a link to the FCC database, but TH-cam appears to not like that. To find it yourself, search the FCC OET database for a grantee code of MMA and a product code of XT511A.
You Sir are Pure Gold!!!! I just dug this out of my radio cabinet to charge the batteries and figured I would look it up just for fun and found your review. You are fantastic!! I laughed so hard coffee came out my nose!!! Thanks Brother!! Oh I think I purchased this for 39.99 8 years ago????
Great review! Describes the radio exactly. I bought one in 2020. Found out that the external mic will also work on my Uniden handheld HH50 CB radios. Sound is clean and the clock is big enough for me to use at the bedside. I've had the unit freeze up on me a few times; the fix has been to pull the battery pack and let it sit for a bit. Once I put it back together it starts working again. I removed the little antenna from the radio and attached an SO239 coax connector on the back - so I can use it with the GMRS antenna on my car. After installing a standardized antenna connector I was able to measure power - about 3.5 watts on high. Handy package for the campsite when paired with a bunch of handheld GMRS or FRS radios. Thanks for sharing!
These radios are awesome and midland has great customer support. I had a few batteries die on me and the hand held clip break and they sent me a replacement one for free. That is great customer support.

OK: so I watched your video and read all of the comments as of the time of this writing. There are two types of wind-up emergency radios: 1) The type where you cannot listen to the radio while you are cranking and hence worthless as a emergency crank radio; and 2) Those that you can listen (and perhaps transmit) while you are cranking, because after all in an emergency who has time to crank first -- that defeats the whole purpose! I purchased the Radioddity AM/FM/NOAA hand crank radio because you can crank and listen at the same time! But of course that one is not GMRS transmit compatible. Oh great Xenu: please let it crank and receive (and maybe transmit) at the same time!!!
I purchased 5 of them last year, these things are awesome had to wait 9 months before they arrived but well worth the wait. These things are perfect I have one in my travel trailer and a bunch of handheld radios. They also work great if you own acreage 10+ acres or whatever to work around the property and work awesome.
I have 2 of them. one older has different charger but can swap them . they work pretty good. you can run them on 2 AA LFP 3.2V battery's and 2 dummy cells. have to take them out to charge. and with 12V cord you can connect solar panel used for car charging and will charge that radio real nice. we just clipped to tent and for 2 week trip never lost power and we ran weather and AM/FM radio as well. 😀 one of many Midland radios we have. well 2
Midland should have included the repeater function, but I assume that Midland would have to raise the price and redesign the dynamo charging system, hold a charge for 12 hours of on and off use when standard batteries or other power source is unavailable. Happy Holidays Mr. Randy! I do need add my may sound weird or somewhat stupid, but I did not say that radio was is useless. That radio has one feature that the majority GMRS or HAM doesn't. The ability to monitor both AM as well as FM broadcast band. Most Todays radios will only monitor FM Broadcast Band
I wanted one of those before I got the midland 15watt micromobile radio. tbh i think the micromobile is a better choice for base station with a portable jackery or large emergency battery pack. and around here in rural kentucky, CB still is king when SHTF.
You should do that phone number thingy. I definitely wouldn't write "for a good time, call Randy at ..." in various rest stop men's rooms. You should also do a whole video for April Fools day where where you just sit there doing nothing for 10 minutes then finish with "affiliate link below"
I think I might buy one just to have in my arsenal. I always figured with the surge in people getting into GMRS that Midland would up date that radio . Maybe not make it repeater capable but at least make so you could up grade the antenna at least. They sell enough of them as is I guess they don’t care about upgrading.
I've got the older version of this that has 3 cheap LED's as opposed to the one brighter LED that they seem to have now... Otherwise it seems exactly the same... I like that the screen is big enough to make it useful even as just a clock. It makes for a perfect little work bench clock/FM radio while working. Meaning that it gets enough use outside of emergencies that I don't have to worry about pulling it out of years of storage only to find the battery dead. I've always been a fan of "emergency" equipment that's useful outside of emergencies so you don't end up pulling out dead/spoiled stuff during an actual emergency.

Seriously Midland, would it have killed you to have gone with 2.0, 3.0, or more Ah of battery capacity?🙄 2) Why not allow the charger to act as an AC or DC adaptor so it can be left on 24/7 and run as a base station for short distance operations like a small farm or perhaps a neighborhood watch? 3) no repeater capability...
Had been looking for Emergency Radio picked up quick .... however then saw Northridge 4x4 and Walmart had a lot cheaper showing in stock. Hopefully my purchase supports Randy though.
