As a guitarist, all cymbals seemed somewhat the same to me. It is really interessting to hear some clear examples of where to use which cymbals. Perfect for writing drum parts. If you could do more of these videos with different cymbals, that would be awesome.

Love splashes! I think Stewart Copeland made great use of a splash, but I really started getting into George Kollias. Turns out, he makes a pretty sick use of the cymbal too!
Hey, great video. I was just going to suggest something for your snare mic. Right now the microphone is hanging over the drum head. What this does is it allows the sound from the head to not only hit the front of the capsule, but also the back from the side vents. This means you are picking up and rejecting the same resonating head. You might get a better sound out of that mic if you backed it up so that the vents are not hanging over the snare head. I love this video and agree with all the things you've said. If I might add a 4th way very similarly related to your #3, use it in place of a tom in your fill, much like your #3, but hit it more than once in a row. For example play an alternating stroke 16th note fill, 1-e-+-a on the snare, 2+e on the splash, +-a on tom 1, and on down through 3 and 4. Nice way to tease your drum kit and fake a 6 piece when you have a 5 piece. I'd love to hear Ben Minal's approach to this idea!
In Virtual Drumming I used to play the splashes just following my gut while listening drumless music like in videogames, and YEAH the only tip I knew by common sense was the first tip: Crash in the chorus/Splash in the verses. The other tips are awesome since they bring a lot of possibilities in the table!!!

What are your tips for camera quality/ editing soft wear. I feel like that's one of my weaknesses along with being inconsistent. Appreciate it man! Wishing the best always, cheers

I bought a cheapo 8" sr2 splash and put it inside my hihat. It adds a nice bit of high end and makes the hihat sound a bit fatter with the extra swish and sizzle!

Hey man, to me whenever you are playing to me it sounds like there is no reverb? You just play and it sounds like you are in a super tiny room with a crap load of dampening. Did you do this for simplicity and to show of the splash? I just want to make sure my headphones aren't dying on me or anything! ahaha

I know a drummer who uses it before changing from hi-hats to crash. So For about 2 measures she uses it like hi-hats. Pretty cool little cymbals.

You can ride a splash also.
You hold your drumsticks at like the very end of the stick. Unusual but whatever floats your boat.
Sometimes they slip down but I generally try to hold them higher up than the very end. You must have caught me at a moment of slack technique haha
