Peg board as swinging panels is nice. Several can be placed on a wall sort of the way posters are displayed in museum shops. A simple framework can create multiple bypass panels that slide back and forth to expose different tools. Cheap and easy.

I love that another shop organization episode magically pops up just as my new shop has been built.
I have an 8ft x 20ft space at the back of my garage. It's all mine & now that it's real, the subject of organization vs. "work space" is on my mind all the time.
Thank you so much for another episode discussing this subject! It really helps in defining the philosophy of "using my space wisely."
One which I'm sure will evolve over time.
I very much like the idea of maintaining flexibility so as my priorities evolve, so can the space.

My dad gave me a corner of the garage when I was a kid to set up a work shop in and I used peg board. It was nice, it grew with me. I started with your pretty average handy man stuff up there but eventually I got so many wrenches they ended up in a tool box instead of on the board. That gave me room for other stuff up there though like more hammers and clamps. It's good to use when you don't know where you'll end up.

In my apartment workshop I use IKEA's SKÅDIS pegboard clamped to the back of my workbench using connectors IKEA also sells. This saves me from holes in the wall. I 3D print most of the hooks and attachments I use. Sure it's not great for heavy stuff, but it's great to have all my hand tools and some common supplies at easy access. Pegboard is useful beyond storage; I use it to organize hand tools, principally, as it isn’t that strong, at least hardboard versions. Metal pegboard and slot boards add a lot of versatility. Pegboard is also cheap and good for jigs and jig making, router bit holders, adjustable shelf drill templates; it also makes good layout boards and even wire fronts in front of some EMT conduit with wires pulled through the front. Pegboard also makes a rather utilitarian cabinet backer in place of luaun plywood. Find what works for you; I like inexpensive storage and organization solutions as it allows the $ to go to materials, tools, and tooling, all of which makes money for you; organizing just lets you operate more efficiently which translates to less of your time needed to accomplish the task. I’ve been in the trades for decades and have realized my time means more to me than the money so I try to do all I can to work as efficiently as I can to get the most out of the time I put in.

    • @libertarian1637

@@Turk380: I also have it on a few cabinet doors with short hooks for storing thin but oversized items, like zero clearance inserts for my table saw and the table saw blade removal wrenches. I also have exposed joist spaces above the shop and found some great uses for those spaces including some pegboard sections there to hold spring clams as I have a lot and they don’t weigh much; I’m 6’6” so while I don’t have an issue getting anything some people do do that may not be practical for everyone. Some conduit across the joists is sleek a perfect spot for pipe wrenches which as they get larger are a bit too heavy for pegboard.

I have some pegboard in my shop and it’s great for certain items, not so much for others. I used to loath the stuff for the way the hooks always came away from the board whenever you pulled something off of it, until I discovered that there are different types of hangers available to use with it, including little straps that eliminate that problem with the traditional bent metal wire type of hooks.

  • @TOAD7464

Replaced my peg board with plywood, screws and nails hold the tools. Biggest advantage is you can pack more in less space and pegs tend to pop out. Paint marker an outline around the tool so you don't forget what goes there.
Let's push it farther. Thick ply and gate hinges swing open. Common use tools outside, uncommon inside. Don't forget to use the inside of the door also. Reference charts everywhere.
Pro tip: Attaching it to the wall is the LAST step, not the first.

I love using the magnetic tool holders for almost any steel tool that you would normally put on your peg board, just a bar magnet with two screw hole for affixing to wall/cabinet/door/or existing pegboard. I have a big peg board, but for alot of the area, instead of pegs, I just have the magnets, they are cheap and can be easily rearranged. You can really pack the tools tight side by side and top to bottom but still see everything instead of when you put a lot of stuff on a single peg and then it hides things so that they are gone "forever".

  • @GibClark

I always forget about stuff in drawers. But big labels on them definitely helps. If area is damp pegboard tends to fail under the heavier tool loads.

One advantage I see to using pegboard and clear tackle boxes is that they're relatively inexpensive, generalized, near-term solutions that let you evolve your preferred organizational structure. In the long term, once you've found a method that works (and the growth rate of your shop has stabilized somewhat), you can invest in storage that's tailored to specific needs.

  • @Kami8705
    @Kami8705 3 ปีที่แล้ว

I work on many different hobbies and crafts as well. I've never loved pegboard, and have found it works better in some ways to have each hobby or craft in its own box/area depending on the space you have. The basics like screwdrivers and general pliers can be in one common space, but it keeps the rest organized. For instance, I have one bench that is all metal working(angle grinders, punches, larger hammers, welder, etc ) and I'm working on one that is machining. I have other things like all my resin and dyes in a single box and shelf as well. Paint is right above that. Electronics gets another drawer and shelf. They don't even have to be next to each other, but I know those two areas have all my electronics tools. Just my 2 cents

One important thing you'll need is a LABELMAKER!!! And, you should get religously into the habit of labeling ALL of the bins you keep things in, (and number them!) It also helps to keep a catalog of what you keep in each numbered bin, (and, after using things from a certain bin, ALWAYSreturn it to the same container).
I know it sounds a bit OCD. But, it goes a LONG way towards keeping things organized & accessible! The alternative is to try memorizing where you keep everything, (NOT RECOMMENDED!!!) 🤣😆😁

There is always a battle between pegboard and something like french cleats. Pegboard is simple, cheap, easy to change, but the individual tool holders are pretty basic, not very fancy. People that like french cleats always build fancy tool holders for every single little tool, things you can't easily buy for pegboard. I have many of my tools in a small rolling cabinet, basically in drawers. I have some commonly used tools such as pliers, clamps, screwdrivers, hammers on pegboard and this type of tool is easy to store on pegboard. I use the 2 tier method where some tools are on pegboard where I can see them and grab them, other tools are in drawers. The key to using any system is having a place for everything and knowing where that place is. I find that if I have to pull out a drawer and grab an item that is near the front left corner of the drawer, this is about the same as being able to grab it off of a pegboard, or very nearly as good. I don't like shelves for storing tools except for a few tools that I don't use that often such as circular saw, router, and sander.

Peg board has real advantages, but it’s also incredibly frustrating. I have yet to find a way to keep the hooks from coming along with whatever I am removing from it much of the time, and I’ve tried different hooks and the little plastic keepers. On the plus side, it is by far the cheapest solution and is very reconfigurable. There are much better systems, involving rails and backers with slots and their associated hooks, but they are far more expensive.

I find pegboard and its accessories too limiting for my storage needs. If I want to fit a lot into a small space, the metal wire hangers and baskets take up too much of their own space (not to mention they fall off incessantly). I prefer to screw a piece of plywood or OSB to the wall, paint it, and then just screw or nail stuff into it where ever is best. Making specific holders can be simple all the way up to complicated. Or just hang stuff on a nail/screw; done. It'll never fall off and moving stuff around is as trivial as pegboard, just screw it onto the wall somewhere else, and without the restrictions of the wire hangers or the spacing of the holes.

It would also force me to keep my darn tabletops cleaned off so I can swing it open. Bonus.

The bottom line is figure out a way where you know where everything you need is. Don’t ask... invent it.

I agree pegboard is a great idea. However there is so much wrong with average pegboard and hooks. Crap pegboard at big box stores and crappy hooks. Ikea has harder pegboard but sheets are small and honestly the hooks will fall out if you look at them the wrong way. Yes you can buy fasteners for the hooks but why not design them right in the first place? Plus the $$ add up. So are there other pegboard and hook options out there that can be recommended? I have seen metal pegboard but I have no clue about it, etc.
