Librarian the type to go to sleep in a nightcap and nightgown. Snore like “*honk*, shoooo *honk*, shoooo” until being awoken by a noise. Then going to investigate with a little candle holder.
And then completely miss the scary thing happening in front of him because he's too busy pondering what makes it scary lmao
This is adorable, lol. I can see this happening.
and then he finds out that said noise came from an eldritch being in his home

I can't see anyone mentioning it, the statue at 11:50 is a Shrine of Arkay from The Elder Scrolls, Arkay is the god of life and death
ohhh that's why I recognized it!
32:55 Darwin absolutely shocked by how quick on the draw you were, and how close you were to a direct hit

Not personally a fan of things being crunched down to fit super specific 'aesthetics'... I really do think people should just make things they want and explore weird ideas without feeling they have to fit within a category- and also without people thinking they need to create a category to explain it.
Right? Why do we need a subcategory(Weirdcore) of a subcategory(Dreamcore) of a subcategory(Liminality) to define what an artwork is? Surrealism is an abstract enough artform for every aesthetic born from it to fit into perfectly without being called Weirdcore or Dreamcore, two aesthetics which I personally don't see much of a difference between. I guess it helps to separate each aesthetic into easily defined search terms but once again, even as someone who thoroughly enjoys both of these aesthetics, I'm really struggling to see a difference between Weirdcore and Dreamcore.
It's just like what happened with the Backrooms that kicked off the whole Liminal trend. It started out as this unnerving thought experiment and evolved into a convoluted mess of different entities and levels who's entire purpose was to kill you. For me at least, the appeal of the backrooms was never how scary or threatening it was but instead the cross between tranquility and pure existential dread you get from peaking behind the curtain of our reality and discovering yourself lost in an endless maze of familiarity. Kaine Pixels is the only person who's been able to make the concept of entities interesting to me since he makes them seem less overtly hostile and more confused, scared, and even sad especially in his series "The Oldest View".
I agree with the idea that people shouldn't create something to conform to some genre. However, I do believe that the creation of these genres and subgenres is helpful to the community.
As an example, I like metal. But not all metal. I enjoy power, neoclassical, instrumental, progressive, and melodic metal. I do not like thrash, heavy, black, or rap metal.
I choose metal because it has a large gap in the differences between its subgenres. Without someone creating and labeling these subgenres, I wouldn't have known that the songs in these are actually fun for me to listen to, I would have just continued tolerating metal because I thought it was just "metal".
Aesthetic genres are a bit different, though, and I will admit that this is comparing apples to oranges. I just believe that the creation and labeling of these is important for people who do enjoy one but a slight change to it may throw them off.
Just my two cents!
I do like putting "-core" at the end of any random word and act like its an aesthetic

One thing I’ve noticed is that weirdcore and dreamcore often get confused with each other, as they don’t have a solidified meaning yet. The way I see it is
Dreamcore: internet age Alice in wonderland
Weirdcore: a fever dream in photo editing software
Dreamcore and Weirdcore are like the Ying and Yang of liminal dreamscapes.
45:20 That is the most suspenseful flashlight raise ever.
45:19 I expected Librarian to go into the attic, turn on his flashlight, and see some person standing in the dark like the other ones on the lower floors. But the realization of looking at the silhouette in the dark and slowly but surely realizing that it looks nothing like the silhouettes of the other people in the house, only for Librarian to shine the light on it and have my suspicions proven right that it was definitely NOT a normal person, was amazing.
and the abrupt transition right after like nothing happened
Oh boy, feels like it's been a while since you last played a gmod map
agreed
tbh i love librarian's vr gmod maps
The picture at 17:53 was the album art for Slayer's album "Repentless", which was their final studio album after the lead guitarist passed
It was hard for me to watch the rest of the video because I was so excited about the slayer jumpscare
Damn...Rest in peace. That's sad:(
32:44 the instant reflex you had to shoot Darwin in the face was really funny XD
great video as always!

You actually used it as a dollhouse, surrounded it with toys to set a scene stuffed it full of dolls That's what we all need a little more play time.

Those “pink leaf trees” are called Cherry blossom trees
The final sequence of fortification gives some kind of soothing relief of rescue, like hell yeah now this place has been taken care of
Billboards/sprites that turn to face you has been a visceral fear of mine since childhood. I'm not certain why... other people generally don't seem to share my feelings.
Either way, I could never explore this map. 😨 F*** that.
I can confide in that feeling actually, you might be able to compare it to the eyes of a painting following you effect. One of my fears growing up was like, inanimate objects having an agenda? I don't know how to describe it exactly, but the thought of something that shouldn't be capable of feeling or being angry having it out for you and wanting to attack you is just so weird and unreal that it creeped me out so much. I think that fear of billboard sprites turning towards you kind of encompasses that, like they're looking specifically at YOU, can feel really unsettling when it's noticeable and the context is right.
Imagine waking up in these places. Everything seemed fine. Your day ended, you’re very tired and so you head right to sleep on your couch or bed (your choice) and without knowing how you end up in this unknown location. You don’t remember anything that happened before hand either. So to you, you kind of just appeared here
34:26 Dancingbrarian enters the chat
You always know it's going to be a good friday night when Mr. Librarian is playing Gmod again. I'm already anticipating some juicy jump-scares)
P.S. The anticipation was justified in just the first three minutes_)
An interesting idea you brought in this videos is doing a "revamp" of a gmod map after exploring it, as shown up in the doll house map.
You could do something similar (spawning npcs, putting objects, etc) in other liminal maps as well to see how the ambient changes with presence of "people".
Repentless' album cover being a jumpscare, was one of the funniest things I've seen on a GMOD map.
Duuuude- Weirdcore maps! I missed these! there's such a creepy and unsettling aspect that is designed on dreams and nightmares that I love!
Edit: On the subject of why Weirdcore is known for being so negative is because the aesthetic itself is often used as a way for people to vent their traumas. Religious symbolism, loneliness and the concept of childhood nostalgia are very common staples and often represent the person's own struggles. BUT its also just people having fun with the concept of a creepy dream- but the fundamentals of it were to help with coping!
love the build at the end, you gotta do a little something like that at the end of every map. really highlights the control you have over the environment.
43:37 the idea of somebody looking at a small gmod horror map and going “I should turn this into Outer Heaven” is really funny to me I don’t know why
I immediately recognized that "idol" as the shrine of arkay from skyrim
This was probably the most creative exploration ive seen of yours i really enjoyed it that end bit with the monster in the darkness was phenomenal
shrine of arkay reference spotted
I've really started getting hyperfocused on Weirdcore lately, I'm not entirely sure what about it draws me in so much, but it instills a feeling in me that I just can't get enough of. The best way I can describe it is like a scary, messy, fever dream that's blissful on the surface, but just a quick glance to your left or right could break that illusion as quickly as it was fabricated.
Isn't that sun thing surrounded by statutes at 12:17 an arkay shrine from the elder scrolls?
Looks like it yeah
Indeed. indeed it is.
That seems to be the theme of the map, life and death
It’s always fun in Gmod maps to find a dedicated space where you would sleep or post up to keep safe. It makes large scary maps feel so much more cozy and comforting. It was interesting to hear that your spot would be under the stairs.
Thanks for exploring some weirdcore maps, it’s one of my favorite aesthetics!!
Entrancingly atmospheric video as always, Librarian. Talking about Cement Mixer Simulator 2003, I really hope the dev completes the game, by which I mean that all the doors have their own respective levels. Compared to Hendecad, cement mixer feels incomplete. I can't put into words how much I love Hendecad, so honestly I'd be so happy if the dev brings cement mixer to its full potential
_NOTHING IS REAL_
_MIND IS SOFTWARE_
I feel like those quotes would fit in maps like these
the day the librarian stops doing gmod vr videos is the day i will lose all my humanity
The Altar used at 12:05 is the shrine of Arkay, the god of the cycle of life in death in the elder scrolls mythos.
Alright, if your map is gonna have a skeleton party room, put a room off to the side with the crystal in it, it is mandatory
I watched this video high. Was the first time I smoked in years and I just could not stop laughing when I first saw the "accurate angels". I swear must I have laughed the entire remainder of the video. It also reinforced me in my decision to not smoke that much again.
4:32 nice its the first time i see text happening in vr, pretty trippy.
Also i love this kinda map, surreal has hell, and i wish i could play them in vr
Edit: the librarian lore gets deeper by the second with the comeback of darwin and the bone brigade
Love those roleplay bits
I love how your first instinct when something scares you is to pull out a glock
Open video, immediately got hit by nostalgia. The ambient sounds in the beginning are literally the North Point Mall ambient from GTA: Vice City. And GTA: Vice City was the first 3D game I've ever played.
Exactly this. It does make the whole thing feel weirdly more comfy
Librarian: shoots Darwin in the face without a moments hesitation
Librarian: Sorry, force of habit 😅
Those first three seconds hearing the mall muzak from GTA Vice City hit me so hard with nostalgia.
The mojo dojo casa house was such a treat at the end of the video I love your commentary :)
It's always nice to watch a new GMod video on a friday night. I still have to wait until my pizza gets delivered so I can properly watch this.1
I hope everyone has a great watch and enjoy the weekend.
45:23 as soon as I saw that "thing" my heart skipped a beat
36:28
Which thing?
pansexual toy chica for the win
Your voice is so chill, youre like an explorer documenting these games and maps you play. But almost like youre familiar with the strange realities and entities, calm but wary. I love it.
Librarian, I'd love it if you checked out more VR Chat maps. Those are super cool!
Thank you for this. It was a nice refreshing palate cleanser after that last… thing…
Dollhouse, while being geometrically limited, was a nice example of what can be done to customize such maps.
2:45 Bro's reaction to getting jumpscared by a biblically accurate angel was "ooOOAASSISSsss"
The unusual artifact between the four statues is a shrine of Arkay, one of the nine divines in the elder scrolls universe.
Core is the part of something that is central to its existence or character, I think its kindve like the new version of when there was a bunch of "Punk" aesthetics based off musical and literature genres
Weirdcore is older than dreamcore but they've kindve osmosified into one aesthetics based on nostalgia, dreams, liminal spaces, and comfortable feelings
Bro that little snippet in the attic at the end actually got me XD
A good video to watch while sleep deprived, alone at home as it rains, with a headache coming on
I would like that a fair bit! Taking the creepy, and turning it into comfy.
Finally, another Gmod video… yes!!
That last map had a really disturbing, dark feel to it!
you forgot to mention the creepiest part of those dead trees by the pool, the fact that there were no leaves on the ground. that implies that either the trees died before it was abandoned and they just cleaned up the leaves, or more terrifyingly that it's not abandoned at all. the easter egg kinda ruins that but until you broke that glass I was very spooked.
Thank you, i love the cryptic vibe of this gmod.
a quick side note, the slight jumpscare on the first map when you pick up the cup at 17:51 is actually the album cover of "Repentless" by the famous thrash metal band Slayer.
The second I saw Garrys Mod AND Weirdcore in the thumbnail, I was excited!
Also that music in the opening- I heard it in the album “Palm Mall” by Corp. Great album btw
And as cool as the weirdcore map looked in vr, it may have been better played flat screen so you could read the on screen text.
17:54 oh my gosh that’s Slayers last album “Repentless”, that’s so epic.
0:00 hell yes, Vice Point Mall music!
At 40:47 you were talking about the dark being disturbingly realistic, and nearly as soon as you finished saying that my screen went black for an ad break. I'll tell you what though, it felt like it was a part of the map for a second. Staring into a pitch black child's play room with only the light from another room casting into it, to everything going dark sure made my heart jump!
EDIT: Librar, I'd love to see what you can turn some of the spooky gmod maps into! Fortifying the dollhouse was an unexpected but very welcome twist
Such a magical voice
It is a bad trip...
It is a fever dream...
It is your brain shutting down slowly as your body temperature hits 38.9°c...
The construct of dreams falling apart to that smell you could never place and a tune you remember endlessly playing on repeat without any way to mute it.
A feeling of heat in your head, and your head falling back, a panic trying to hang onto all ephemeral senses.
It is Weirdcore.
I like how he just contained that whole house.
I think we can all agree that this genre has attracted the peak of Autismcore
12:00 That's a shrine of Arkay
In institutions for senile people etc, dark floor surface sections can actually prevent them going a wall , they precept the dark floor as a pit ,a want go over it .
that bio illumines sense mushroom room i could live in for the rest of eternity lol
Librarian takijg a hororr map and making it something googy and funny is my favorite thing

i love these gmod vr videos
Yesss was hoping for another one!!
I love weirdcore. Such a delightful aesthetic.
Truly a strange environment you're browsing in there. It makes me wonder who creates all these Map layouts. Where they got all there Graphic design Ideas from. Great Visual Presentation and Commentary. Keep Surfing.
The dancing skeletons makes the "hey boy hej girl" video by chemical brothers come into mind....
the end is never the end and its a dream
There are maps like this in Roblox called "Explore Dreamcore/Weirdcore", " Pepper's Playhouse/Weirdcore", "Critterspace", " Clinic of dreams".
29:05 that’s how I feel after building Warhammer models with no ventilation in the room
sire i beg of thee, bless us with a mere crumb of signalis gameplay sire
I like how he causally pulls out a gun after that angel thing appeared out of thin air
You have the perfect voice for audio books
A new Librarian video to enjoy and relax to! Thank you :)
Immediately recognized the vice city mall music!
I love these types of Gmod videos!
Okay, i have zero context for the boney brigade but god that was fun ^~^
Why does his "hello everyone" sound like Stampy?
The Large rotating thing with eyes above the oil pump Jack on the first map is what is known as a ‘throne’. Thrones or throne are another type of biblical Angel. It is said that four of them carry around the throne the God sits on.
La la la la so much more room to see all of things again and again I die again to all to see what we can find you
Hell yeah the weirdcore suggestion
VR acid-trip-esque and/or liminal space maps sound like they would be really dang fun. Like a lucid dream while still awake, even including the fun godlike powers that can come with lucid dreams, if you use cheats!
2:42 you couldn’t have more perfect ironic timing if you tried
12:26 Librarian straight up shoots the Shrine of Arkay.
That's pretty much a flex right there.
The funny thing is that Weirdcore map, the first one, has screen text that pops up within each room/part of the map. So best done in desktop mode because of which.
