Well darn on you for such tantalizing photography of Ruth blending her tan lines! Santa Barbara is one of So. Cals. Nicest cities and harbors. We just drove through it today after spending a couple of days in Santa Ynez relaxing. Driving along the coast, I am always thinking of you sailors out there enjoying the wind and sea! I sure hope you stop in San Diego for a few days. I would like to meet you!

Love seeing the joy, openness brings us a thriller episode!
No running around that storm! Shallow bays storms dragging water out dumping my brothers crew boat on bottom! They had to walk last distance to dock! Drove to ORLEANS in eye hurricane 😎

Regards from Finland. Been watching the channel since the concrete keel pour way back. We're getting ready for the winter here, where it get's down to -25-30°C and the sea freezes to 1m+ thick. Watching these warmer videos makes the winter months just that little bit bearable. Keep on sailing. -Paul

It's amazing how big the swells are and how the camera doesn't show it ! That's the kind of seas that pull anchors loose

    • @kevnwarriner8819
      @kevnwarriner8819 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

If the boat is anchored in deep water then it's fairly safe, but if the crew makes the mistake of anchoring close in to the shore in shallow water then the boat is likely to drag its anchor, as the footage showed with the Yacht laid over on its side on the beach, Garret and Ruth mentioned that some of the boats had moved out into deeper water and if things got worse Garret said that he would consider moving Rediviva further out into deeper water, which is what you learn from the way a boat moves in shallow water and how much they roll around with the swell, often rising and falling a considerable distance and sometimes hitting the seabed with the Keel and damaging the boat which leads to the crew anchoring further out the next time there's a hint of a swell.

Been watch you guys for about four years now. Never commented til now. So much I could and would like to say but I’ll boil it down. Garrett is so able in so many areas. Genuinely a fine quality man. Ruth, also amazingly talented and one one of the most loving and sweet souls out there. Cuter than cute and her inner quality adds to her beauty. Two solid human beings who compliment each other so incredibly well. The type of people you are makes me cheer for you and wish you the very best. Refreshing to see motivated people who are willing to work long and hard to MAKE their dreams come true. My best to you sincerely and always.

Am so thrilled to see Ruth able to drive a stick shift, very, very cool. It's sadly becoming something of a dying skill. Both my daughters learned to drive manual trannys and they love it. I taught there mom how to in an old 1970 army jeep. All three at the beginning of their learning were convinced it was too difficult and not worth it and to this day all would rather have a manual over an auto any day, especially my daughters.
To anyone that has never driven a stick shift, learn it, it's not difficult and you will love it.

Many YT Sailing Channels are attending the Annapolis Boat Show. The Young Crusiers Association awards were handed out last night. Your channel is deserving of an award. Don't fret, many of the channels I voted for didn't win. IMHO, the judges don't watch very much YT Sailing. Your building/sailing channel is very good. Thanks for bringing your fans along for the adventure. ⛵👍

Congrats to finally making into Southern California, Santa Barbara has gorgeous landscapes along with nice warm waters. Someday I'll be in those waters as well.
I don't blame ya wanting to keep watch, plus it's not easy to sleep during swells. A lot of folks don't realize it but swells can be dangerous at times, especially, when your near rocky coastal waters. Imagine, if someone was in that boat during that swell, they can get hurt so easily.

I was once told by an old sailor that in conditions like the ones you showed in this clip, the anchor chain is no use to you at all if it is in the chain locker. His advice was let it all out. Forget the "ideal scope for the depth" rule of thumb, just let it all out. If nothing else, the weight of the chain will help to damp the motion and reduce the snag on the anchor itself and the resulting near horizontal pull on the anchor on the bottom will help to bed it in and improve its grip.
It looks like several of the boats in the bay that day needed to follow that advice.
Of course, getting all that chain back in again is a pain and you can find that the anchor is well bedded in and difficult to break out, but better that than trying to re-float your beached boat.
It's great to see you out and enjoying the fruits of your labours.

Loved watching this while sitting in SB harbor! When we first came into the anchorage it was low tide, not a huge swell, and still boats on the inside were seeing some pretty critical swell. We rolled our guts out for one night and then moved into the harbor... lol, we’re eating ramen this month as a result. Can’t wait for next week! We stayed in Pelican cove for a night on Santa Cruz Island and it was gorgeous!

Santa Barbara is where I began my life in boats when our babysitter took me for a sail in a Geary 18 - locally known as a Flattie - some 77 years ago. When I was 13 I'd cruise the neighborhood, collecting soda pop bottles to get the 2 cent deposit. Then I'd ride my bike to the harbor, where they rented skiffs for a penny a minute. That harbor is where I learned to sail. So many happy memories sailing in that sunny place.
    Fair winds to you.

After all these years of building, I really wish you this life aboard the boat. And I must honestly admit that I envy you what you have now achieved.
Could I give you an idea for your tiller?
I did have an old wooden boat many years ago, an for the tiller on that boat I did have a small short flat bar sitting along the tiller above the transom.
And under it on the top of the transom there was sitting a longer T-bar bracket looking like a comb.
So I could let the tiller down so the bar on the tiller entered between the tooths in the comb.
That way the tiller was fixed so I did not need to hold the tiller all the time and rest my arms.
And when I had to adjust the direction a bit, just lifting the tiller out of the comb and move it to an other notch in the comb.
Much comfortable not have to stand up against the forces from the rudder all the time, especially in higer speed/wind.
Quite easy to make as well.
    Keep your awesome videos coming.
And I love the love and respect you give to each other all the time.

Hello you two. I loved the educational aspect of the build over the years, I would hate to see you lose that in as you evolve your Channel into life underway.
Speaking for myself, I would love to see some of the more mundane things included in your weekly travelogue. Some Counterpoint to the spectacular scenery and beautiful lines of the boat.
For example simple decision making that you may take for granted Some of the tiny victories and damned disappointments that is part of every sailors live aboard life. Wishing you great success and good fortune.
