If you have a Blue Badge it comes with an information pack. It is very clear about when and when not to use it. People use blue badges for all sorts of reasons but it does have rules, no one seems to enforce the miss use. Unfortunately this causes lots of resentment when people see what they perceive to be miss use and I can understand this. I have a blue badge and I see this particular thing a lot. If badge holders are challenged by parking attendants etc more often it would hopefully stop a lot of this. I would happily comply with a request to see the details of my badge by the right people

I’m sick of hearing about invisible disability. I need a disabled parking bay because I need the extra space to open the doors wide enough to enable me to get in and out of my car. If you’re able to remove from the car without extra space then park in a regular space and leave the bigger ones for people who need them.

People with invisible illness can also need to open the door wide to get out, im 49, i dont look disabled but i struggle with constant chronic pain, so just because my illness is what they call 'hidden' it doesnt mean i dont need the disabled space to get in and out my car. Also the spaces being closer to the shops help, because my pain is much worse when i get back to my car!!

ALSO If you have a Blue Badge, you can get a ticket if you park across a bobbled drop curb. That curb is for sight impairment people to cross. So don't think you're exempt.

I am a 69 y/o care worker and have in the space of 3-4 months received two parking tickets which were deducted by my company £120.00 both were from two different locations at MacDonalds. I drive a disabled minibus which is longer than most disabled parking bays and always display the cards in the dash window. On both occasions I had to wait for non-disabled builders trucks to move from a disabled parking bay so I could operate the wheelchair lift for 3 meters of access. The decision made that MacDonalds do not care and employs external parking cameras to monitor these parking bays. There a hundreds of disabled clients all over the country who love to go for a MacDonalds, but the word is out that no longer will these care companies use MacDonalds again!

Regarding Blue Badge holders. Being such a holder. It does NOT mean that you have to park in a disabled bay. Also as an example. There may be many unrestricted spaces to park, and one single marked disabled bay, and, WOWEE! no time limit. These bays are generally provided for a local resident. Please respect this provision. Believe me. There's nothing worse as a disabled driver to pop to the supermarket and upon return, to find the bay is now taken by another. Worst of all, to see that person able to walk reasonably well.

Please be mindful that if you see an able bodied person get out of a car with a blue badge, doesnt mean they are not disabled. There are many hidden disabilities, blue badges aren't just for people with physical disabilities. I've witnessed previously, people questioning/voicing their opinions on able bodied disabled people who have either had mental heath, or diabetes etc. just because the person who got out the car was able bodied doesn't necessarily mean that the blue badge wasn't for them. Blue badges aren't just for getting people closer to the shop. People with hidden disabilities/mental health issues can have a blue badge.

I suffer with chronic pain I am for all intensive purposes completely able-bodied. I ride a large motorcycle I can walk I can do everything that everyone else can until I can't. It's totally unfair to be berated and screamed at the side of a road when I use a disabled bay which is very rare because as a motorcyclist I can park anywhere but people have no idea what your disability is or what you have to go through your life and until they go through it themselves they really don't have a clue they should keep their mouth shut.

Here in France, we no longer use the 'Blue Badge', but a credit card sized card. Yes, our Government trusts us that much. But, I have lived here for 20+ years, and have NEVER been abused even verbally, nor have I witnessed misuse of the dedicated parking system. Such a difference to the Britain I left. That said, I cannot comment on the situation in the big towns & cities, because I simply do not know what it is like there.

What do I do about a shingles' vaccination, 75, when I have been sacked by my doctors? I complained about the lack of disabled facilities at the surgery, they lied to NHS England, told them that my recent house move was to outside the catchment area. And I haven't moved. I can't get a new doctor because, although they are the closest, it will take me two hours to get there in my Scooterpac Cabin Car. The council have erected barriers on the bridge nearest me, so NO DISABLED can cross. They have blocked, with barriers, 3 alleyways that would be usable, but not to cripples. So it is a long way round?

    • @greymatters1950

First time seeing you. Disabled since 19/12/1980 in a freak motorcycle accident and nearly lost my left leg. I got Shingles on my face at the age of 57 (now 63) as a side effect of a, new to me, Diabetic medication. Only took it for three days before the symptoms appeared so quickly back to the doc who changed the medication and got me seen by an eye specialist. As a result of the Shingles I now have Early Onset Macular Degeneration, the start of Cataracts and dry eyes requiring drops 4 times a day. I do not drive anymore due to medical complications. I voluntary gave up my driving licence when I started having seizures, broke my spine during one (2021) and smashed both my shoulders in another(2022), spine glued back together and both shoulders replaced, but I still have a blue badge because I have friends who will drive me to appointments and church if I need help getting there and use it to park. In my 43 years as a disabled driver of Cars, Motorbikes, Transits and Box vans I have seen too many misuses of the Blue Badge, but I think the best was 4 young ladies? jumping out of a low slung open toped sports car and running into the gym, the driver had "borrowed" her Grandmothers badge because she was fed up of struggling to find parking outside the gym but the trouble is that the picture is on the back of the badge and not the front even though there is room for it. Sorry for the long post but aren't us old ones always accused of going on too long.😂😊🧡

I give back by being involved with an access charity, Stafford and District Access Group where we look at disabled Access issues and take them to the local councils and we have had some success. As part of my last job was building condition Surveyor so have a good deal of info to pass on and help others where I can. 😊🧡

@@greymatters1950 I have had a blue badge since 1981 after a motorcycle accident. I also received what they now call P.I.P since 1996. A great scheme except the D.W.P has attempted to take it away 3 times and the tribunals rule in my favour. Just bear in mind they just do not want you to have benefits and do their very best to discriminate against you. Last time they tried to stop it, they checked me and said i have no problems. They ignored all the illnesses i have and dismissed the 8 Doctors reports confirming i have multiple disabilities which are very visible due to the damage from the accident. When challenged to another tribunal, they just phoned me asking me to drop the tribunal and they would give me the benefits back and add some more as i had so many problems. One of the reports said no problems at all, the next one said i have many serious disabilities. They just lie. 600 pages of medical records for treatment were ignored as if there was no evidence at all.. Challenge these D.W.P decisions every time as they always lie in their favour. Hard to believe they have picked on me 3 times to take it away even after having to retire early due to illness, they still came after me again. I worked until i was 59 and could not work any more then 4 years later, they chased me again. Bunch of pirates

Able body person parking not only on double yellow lines but in any disabled parking bay is also illegal and can have your badge taken off you. They can quite happily park miles from the shop and jog to it and leave the parking bays for a disabled person to have. Misuse of a blue badge is illegal and acting stupid and saying “I didn’t know” is no defence as you get all terms and conditions when you receive your blue badge…BE WARNED.🤬😡

USA Our son got shingles in high school and boy was he miserable. Got my vaccine as soon as It was suggested to me by the doctor. Shingles is like poison oak and poison ivy on steroids.
Handicapped parking: In our state in the USA there is an identification number on the hanger. All the police have to do is call in that number and see who it belongs to and the dates it is valid.
Gotta love San Francisco: If you are caught in a handicapped parking area it is $750. If they catch you with some elses permit it is $750x 2; one because if it is not yours they consider you to not have one and then a fine for possessing an invalid permit and then they confiscate the permit. So go home and tell grandma that you just lost he handicap permit and she has to reapply.

I have sometimes been in a car 🚗 park and seen able bodied people getting out of cars and going into the shop while the disabled person waits in the drivers seat waiting for them. I know their disabled cos maybe there old. But I never realised that's against the law

Please be mindful that just because the person who got out the car was able bodied doesn't necessarily mean that the blue badge wasn't for them. Blue badges aren't just for getting people closer to the shop. People with hidden disabilities/mental health issues can have a blue badge.

Also disabilities aren't just subject to the elderly. Your comment/thought process is very discriminatory and ageist.

I regret it's not misinformation. The Gov website makes it clear: (Copied) "You should not use the badge to allow non-disabled people to take advantage of the benefits while you sit in the car." To be clear, I'm referring to on-street parking on yellow lines.

Paul Payne You need to check the facts. The blue badge is for the disabled person to use for getting out the car and not so you can wait in the car while the person with you to use it even if they are getting medication for you. Do have a look on the UK Gov website for full details.

Erm, nope. My Nan and Grandad fell foul of this rule by doing what you did.

My understanding is that the badge is only for the holder of the badge to use it. It may be inconvenient for your wife but she cannot use the badge to run in to the shops even if you are ill. Sorry that you are not well but you may be prosecuted for the Badge misuse

If your not able to go into the shops then on council parking that would be abuse of blue badge rules, however therss no such law if its shops own parking ad blue badge isn't a legal document on private parking
If council parking and u feel unable to get out, your wife must then move to a regular parking place

The whole scheme should be scrapped and the money spent on social care.
