The Knights Templar were created in 1120 to protect pilgrims going and coming from the Holy Land. They became the most powerful financial banking entity in Western Europe by 1170 and grew rapidly until 1307, when the King of France and the Pope teamed up to destroy the Templars and seize their monies. The Templars funded the building of many of the cathedrals in the Middle Ages. The St Clairs of Rosslyn Scotland have many ties to the Templars, as well as to the Vikings and nobility in Western Europe.
