Michael Shannon is one of the finest actors of our time...and I remember saying that about Willem Dafoe many years ago...incredible cast...and let's not forget Brad Dourif....another amazing talent...
Same here man, what a guy. I first saw him in 8 Mile when I was only a boy. I recommend the movies Wolves and Complete Unknown. Some of my favorite movies with him in there. But I think my favorite performance of his is in the movie Take Shelter.
Brilliant. A statement of genuine truth in storytelling. By letting us watch without fast cuts of random angles, we get the truth of each moment as it unfolds and the people within that space as well, and thus we get a human truth. It is absent of strong emotion because we are allowed simply to watch, to take in, to process without becoming overwhelmed. This is the very essence of art. Well done, Werner, well done everyone involved. Thank you.
People are too hard on this movie. Not what I was expecting.I was extra intrigued because this came out the same year as Herzog's Bad Lieutenant,2009.Thanks for putting this out there.
I think Werner Herzog’s Nosferatu has some of the creepiest imagery that I’ve ever seen. I recommend it for sure, I believe it’s still free on TH-cam, I think it even beats the original 1922 version for creep factor but that’s just my opinion. I gotta watch more of his films.
I can agree with most of the other comments; as long as I say that Hertzog's movies are often incomprehensible, at least to me, and these disjointed scenes give me a headache trying to follow where a plot should be. Basically an attempt to document what it must be like to have a psychotic in your life. Perhaps I'm just not in tune with this type of movie, but for me this was a chore to get through and I felt kinda psychotic by the end.
Werner Herzog, great director ,german like me, but I’m not brain enough to understand his movies 😎 but I like them lots and I like David Lynch 💕 thanks for sharing this one, didn’t know before, great actors and story, but I guess would need more psychological explanation ❗️merry Christmas to y’all guys out there 🎄😎🎄

The young man tried to cope trough theater-uncapable to settle in a group-crying for help yet so kind for his pet irises ends up confused-confusing reality and theater fiction
This is a story about a sick man that no one noticed any other woman wouldn’t have married to him most of us would see right through him and then he kills his mother the man was sick he should’ve been hospitalized!
Ok, so this movie is produced by David Lynch, who only makes movies for himself, understood only by himself, watched and liked only by himself. So, if you are NOT David Lynch, this is one of those completely CRAZY films that have NO MEANING whatsoever, but will have insane dialogue, strange views and closeups and/or stop frames even though the people are just posed, not actually STOPPED in filming (why? who knows?), and of course, the obligatory small person (i.e., dwarf) somewhere placed in the film for absolutely NO REASON. Like watching a lost episode of "Twin Peaks" or a missing reel of "Blue Velvet", both of which were from David Lynch's twisted mind.
Painful to watch. Lessons from this film? a) Grow up, move out from under your parent's wings/home, get job(s), get out and live and learn. b) If your need psychiatric/psychological help, see a doctor, get recommendation/advice from smart professionals, find a recommended therapist that suits you. c) Start reading good books, start with the classics which are full of human historical good advice. d) continue your adult education/learning for life.
Good stuff. Herzog and Lynch always deliver something strangely mesmerizing. To everyone that "doesn't get it" go watch a Michael Bay movie or some s***...
For some this movie is an art. Beautiful art. For me ( please forgive me ) its creepy and funny at the same Times. According to my culture and religion, the lead male actor was tranced back then in peru.
Don't want to be rude here, but this seems to be the only good movie this channel has uploaded. I saw it many years ago and I never knew Lynch and Absurda were involved. Thanks for the upload!
This is really about mental illness, and how those around a loved one descending (or ascending) can be in major denial or not knw how to go about getting someone help. Take this as a cautionary tale. Ya'll need to not get so wrapped up around the cult of personality. Yeah, its a great cast and genius filmmaker, but this is someones story of mental disorder. Something as simple as encouraging someone to go to the ER or taking them there or providing a ride may save a life. Peace Out

Hipped out weirdo that couldn't find his way....Listening to an inner voice....that led to murder! Great guidance system...Found the case was not really different to thousands of others,so not really touched at all...I found Brad to be a weak character,no real discipline and possibly a spoilt brat with no sense of reality...Did the kayakers really drown? We will never know.3/5 for basic viewing.
Agree with you. Upon his request Brad’s mother bought him a piano, followed by a set of drums. When she complained they’ve just sat there untouched he played the typical blame shift game. No mother, I only wanted what you wanted. That scene revealed an individual unable to apply himself to the building blocks of musicality; and character. Later in the movie when he was seated at a mechanical, self playing piano he appeared wistful. He knew he should have followed through with what he really wanted. In all, he was a mildly interesting, but limited, unsympathetic character suffering mental illness. It annoys me no end that Christianity is often used as the reference for lunatics who listen to voices in their heads. When its not just Christianity, but Islam - the religion of peace - that also produces self annihilating lunatics on the basis they will earn rewards such as a bevy of virgins for their misdirected honour. 2 outta 5 from me for the flamingos.

Hertzog captures how difficult it is to hear the sound of the drummer....he is acting beautifully minimalist before all of us...
It's really plotwisted. Love it. Combination of thriller, mystery, noir, black comedy, and ultimate art.

And David Lynch producing Werner Herzog? Total dream team
And the cello player in the Greek play is Ernst Rejsegger!
Thanks for putting this up. Herzog mentioned it in his memoir and I knew I needed to check it out.
I've just finished listening to it on Audible and would recommend it to anyone. The memoir also brought me here... Strange film.

This feels nothing like a David Lynch movie. Sure it was produced by him, but it was written and Directed by Herzog and feels like a Herzog movie.
