Even if there's a limit to which formats one can access in dual video recording, that's perfectly fine. I still haven't filmed beyond 4k for most shoots. If there was dual recording, I'd switch from Fuji to this immediately.

Nikon has been hitting homers since the announcement of the Z9. Really liking what they did with the ZF (not crippling the camera like they did with the DF), and the now the Z6 III. Really pushing the tech, and blurring the lines in many ways between the upper level cameras and their lower level cameras. Now they need to give us a Z30 sized camera with the tech of the ZF/Z6III with a crop sensor, for $1,600 (a la the Sony a6700)... The Tamron lenses are much better than they probably should be. I used to use Nikon's old 180mm f/2.8 prime. It wasn't a fast autofocus lens by any stretch, but the IQ was beautiful, and it was small and light. I use now the Nikon (read Tamron made) 70-180/2.8, not because it's inexpensive, because it's much smaller and lighter than the Nikon 70-200/2.8 VR lenses. Gives me the ability to compress the background, and gives me extra reach beyond my 85 for the rare times I want that extra reach. The IQ is fantastic. Not perfect for some people I'm sure, but it's fantastic for me.
It really is! My friend joked (in a nice way) about how small it is and I replied it was just shy, then we saw the photos and were blown away by a lens that is that [relatively] cheap. It's amazing for the price point and convinced my to invest more into primes as a result.

Nobody gets a charger with the Zf or Z6iii. I heard that we can blame Europe, according to Matt Irwin. They have a law that will kick in soon that forbids electronic items to include a charger in an effort to decrease electronic waste. You can use the older charger so they presume you already have one (I did, but I just gave mine away when I sold my D750). Mostly a phone thing (they are responsible for forcing Apple to USB-c charge their phones), but cameras got caught up in the law. I will be buying a new charger for the Zf. And yes, the 40mm f2 is by far my most used lens now. I even let my F mount 50mm f1.4 G go with the D750.
What do you think about stabilisation in video compared to other brands ? It seems to be a little choppy at 3:00 (the ibis shift to the right). I see some wobble effect on the side of the image at 1:22 too. The Lumix S5ii is certainly better on this point ? Thx for the beautiful shots !
I notice the ibis wobbles too... it seems to be said that Nikon ibis does a great job at longer focal lengths but at what wider angle do the wobbles kick in? To get the Z8 to perform well with the eVR, the shutter speed has to be set at 1/250 or higher, I suspect this is the same with the Z9, Zf and Z6 III. I can say about the Z6/6 II as I no longer have one but, anyone with one of the other Z cameras can test it. You can see how it looks as I have a video on my channel where I tested this.
I wanted to buy a Z6III, but in Poland the price is around $3,300, which is a crazy price. I have a ZF + Z6II, I also do weddings. For now, this set is enough for me. Yes agree with you on Video Backups - even if the backup was optional and the Quality was say max to 1080P 60 FPS this would be sufficient as a backup; just in case ( unlikely with CFE but still possible ) the main card gets corrupted / damaged. Also agree that pre-capture Raw option - would be handy
I suggested to the Nikon rep last week during the hands on, even if they capped dual recording at say, 4K60p, we videographers would be happy. So, until that happens, I have to keep my Sony kit for video, and only use my Z8, when I have full control to do something over, IF I lose any footage. so far, it's been fine, and the image quality is superb using the LUT with NLOG.
Hey man! Thanks for the videos. I have had 2 of these cameras now and whenever recording after 1-2 seconds it says recording interrupted and stops recording. I’ve changed sd cards and batteries etc but still keeps doing it. Once again I’ve sent one back already and the new one is doing the same thing. Have you heard of this issue or run into it. I use really nice cards so don’t see that being an issue. Z8 works perfectly fine with the same cards.
This happens with my z6ii sometimes when recording in 4k 60. It also sometimes struggles to playa video back and ends up crashing. Haven’t found the issue but formatting the card might help
Great video as ever Taylor. So glad you are considering coming back to Nikon for your weddings. At the moment I am shooting with a Z8 and the Z6ii for my weddings and I want to upgrade to the Z6ii for the Z6iii. Did you see Tony Northups video about the lack of Dynamic range on the shadow areas, he made a big meal out of how crap it is, but I'm thinking Nikon isn't his fav brand at the moment as they don't give his pre-released cameras to try out. Any way in your 2 weeks of using the camera have you come across any issues with noisy shadow areas in lowlight. As long is it's better that the Z8 after 1600 iso I'm happy to get the Z6iii.
Taylor! You shoot so many systems and edit your probably one of the best people to ask about color science! I switched from Sony a7r3 to Fuji xt5 and I'm convinced I see differences even with my raws. My heart is in landscapes but I moved from Canada to Scotland and I'm heavily considering doing weddings. Do you find differences or prefer any of your systems for color science? Anything should be achievable in RAW but what's your take?
Is this camera's jpeg colour any good? I find the Sony jpeg colour is not my cup of tea and I am not the type of people who has plenty of time to edit the raw files. I just shoot jpeg 😅
And if these companies aren't going to give us chargers, they should have 1st party dual chargers for sale like Fuji does. One of the more useful accessories.
Yes Nikon needs an EN-ELD.,that has more juice and a USB C port on the battery. They should have released it with the Z6iii. The Z8 need a high capacity battery as well.
Taylor, the Auto- ISO on nikon starts at the ISO you actually are. That means, if you are at ISO 1600 and want to change to AUTO ISO, your starting lowest ISO will be 1600 ! So then you have to anyway change it to the lowest one. That means not so different from Sony.
Can you please make a comparison video between Z7ii vs Z6iii. The price of Z7ii is lesser (around $2000) than Z6iii ( amazon US). Please make a comparison video . Or please suggest which camera would make a value for money purchase.
Why is there even a comparison video needed? The ii´s are rebagged first gen´s with minor updates ... the af of the ii´s aren't even close to the 6iii not even mentioned the z8/9!! If you need sth to relay on then go for the iii, the 7ii is not a professional tool, and didn't even mention the video specs from the z6iii. The z6iii will get even better with the next updates, the ii are at the end of the Hardware, of course the iii is. more expensive but way more efficient and future proof ✌
I hope Nikon will come with two new DX cameras soon. A Z50 II similar to size to the Z50 but with USB-C and a lot of new features. And a Z60! A DX version of the Z6III, same body and with an all features just slightly cheaper than the full frame camera .... :) ...
I think they need to come up with a mirrorless version/update of the fantastic D500. I shoot a lot of sports and action, and me and tons of my fellow Nikon shooters shoot the D500. One of my friends only shoots the D500 and has three or four bodies. Mine still looks and feels new and does everything I ask from it, so I won't be looking to replace it in the short term, but there does seem to be a gap in the Nikon lineup for a similar DX body suitable for sports and action.
Both are great. It’s honestly a toss up. All things considered for photography maybe Nikon wins by a bit for cost for features. Their Z 1.8 glass is pro level, and I have access to all my old Nikon f lenses. But for doing photo and video coverage I prefer Sony for the only reason that they allow video recording to 2 card slots
Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video. Do you think that it might be time for camera makers to stop having microphone and headphone jacks and switch to Bluetooth and/or USB-C for audio purposes? (A body like a Z6III could certainly support 2 or 3 USB-C ports.)
So when you shoot video with no ND, do you just set the shutter to whatever? Or is there kind of an optimum higher shutter speed when you're not doubling the frame rate?
I’ve had all the different stones except 93. And I’ve had the two for a while The 62 has many good things, but the total lack of function buttons is annoying Compared to so many function buttons on the Sony also the screen on the a75R it’s just fantastic. I always been a Nikon fan but I tend to use my Sony much Moore do to function buttons. The location of fn is ok if other fn buttons. But no such thing
It won't happen this year but I might sell my z6 II for this camera next year. I love my 40mm lens. It is a very under rated lens. My copy is very sharp. It has a lot of micro contrast from what I can tell. I see so much detail especially when shooting black and white. I agree about the card slots and the rear LCD screen working both ways. My first DSLR was a Canon T6s and it has a fully articulating screen like that. It comes in handy when you're in a spot where you can't stand behind the camera. I had to pay for a wrong just last month and I may have another one to pay for next year. I might not can get a camera at all next year. We'll see.
was tempted to upgrade my z6ii's for this but recent in depth reviews have shown that the half stacked sensor has a lot of impact on dynamic range - ie the DR is nowhere near as good any more. For me, that's a complete deal breaker unfortunately :(
But since they've been videos showing that it has been overblown by people. Check videos like Kelly Sparks or testcams showing more "correct" methodologies in my opinion.
I returned it as we (wife and I) hate the grip/ergo on the Z6III body. The thumb grip actually extends off the edge of the body for cryin out loud. Who holds a camera with their thumb lining up with the side of a body? Just feels like a block with a finger grip attached to it.
Hey there, i just traded my Zf in for the Z6iii for the better ergonomics. But… though i am not a big video guy, i just need an all a rounder camera for wildlife (flying, running, and stills) and for landscape. I am not a professional, but i like good quality images so i can print and post on social media. Will this Z6iii (even though so many people say DR is bad) would it be good for a wildlife, nature, landscape camera? I don’t have a big budget, just want a camera that is great for what i do.
Most stacked sensors or in this case partially stacked sensors have slightly worse DR than non stacked. However, it looks like even thought the DR isn’t top of class it seems as if it way more than good enough for every style of photography especially if you do a bit of fast moving or portrait photography where animal/people tracking is needed. From what I’ve seen on charts it has just barely worse DR than the Z8 and Z9 but those are also top of class 45mp cameras. You could check Nigel Danson’s video on the z6iii to see some landscape photography examples as well.
How is it my Z6 with an adapter was $2200, and the Z6iii is $4300?? that's a hell of lot of inflation. Either the Z6 was under priced because they new it wasn't ready for the market (and or wanted to get people into mirrorless), or the Z6iii is over-priced trying to recover some R&D costs... 🤷🤷
@@AethersPhil Not true. I bought the Z6ii on sale and then a couple months later I realized that’s because the Z6iii was coming out. I have so much regret for not waiting.
You say you split your time between Sony and Nikon because of TH-cam and it is not the smart thing to do. So if that was not a factor, would you just do Sony or Nikon?
I have already shot several wedding videos with this camera. And I can say that Nikon has a long way to go to become a good camera for video shooting ((, There is no open gate, no choice of video bitrate, due to the fact that the USB and HDMI ports are located close to the screen, it becomes impossible to rotate when connecting the cables, the battery works very well and there is no overheating of the camera in 4k/60, Autofocus at the level of Sony cameras, I also want to note the good recording sound at the level stabilization of Sony cameras (not good and not bad). the dynamic range is good
great review bro,, im event photographer who really need fast AF and good skin tone, the answer is nikon or canon, sony is great at AF but their skin tone sooc not really good,
@paul_55672 because I notice very little difference using one. I just use a plugin if the high frame rate is noticeable. But it’s only really noticeable if you’re moving the camera or the subject is moving quickly
Nikon being a small player.. Should rather be on top of everything.. Missing small things like dual recording? Charger? On top of the sensor and ibis issues on this model? Not enough for a long wait guys. 😢
Always appreciate a review from someone who actually uses the camera, and isn't in a studio making an idiotic clickbait video..... (talking to you Tony Northrup).
I haven’t had a hybrid wedding with it yet. It’s good and fast, just video only goes to a single card slot which I know is a deal breaker for a lot of people
Loved the video, I haven't backed up video or photo for more than 5 years now. I've shot Nikon, Sony and Fuji, no one failure. I've found that if I don't cheap out in memory cards and reset them every time I switched the memory cards to a new camera I get no errors. Memory card Technology has improved to the point that I don't even feel like I'm playing YOLO with my job.
Hope and luck are not great strategies. I've had two card failures in the last few years -- both Sony Tough cards in mint condition. One had the star (after the recall), one did not. I was shooting to two cards both times and it saved me. I absolutely love the Z6 III, but this is a dealbreaker for me. It's WILD that they haven't fixed this.
@@jordancheek5157 I understand that you are speaking from your experience, I don't believe in luck I believe in preparation, when it comes to these things that's why I don't use Sony tough cards because they have a bad record when it comes to errors, I walked away from both Sony and SanDisk(also very flimsy cards) and moved to ProGrade a few years ago, ProGrade don't break a sweat, I am shooting prores and prores Raw on a Angelbird CFexpress card also on the Nikon Z6III so far so good.
@@jordancheek5157 Yeah I get that you had a bad experience but I don't really believe in luck, I believe in preparation, that's why I walked away from Sony and SanDisk SD cards, both have a bad track record when it comes to errors, I've been using ProGrade for SD for years now and AngelBird for the CFexpress type B.
What do you prefer for wedding photography sony or nikon?
Both are great. It’s honestly a toss up. All things considered for photography maybe Nikon wins by a bit for cost for features. Their Z 1.8 glass is pro level, and I have access to all my old Nikon f lenses. But for doing photo and video coverage I prefer Sony for the only reason that they allow video recording to 2 card slots
How do you feel about the Nikon Z6 iii's dynamic range? Is as good as the Z6 or Z6 ii? What about the Sony a7 iv?
I have a recent video about it with raw file downloads
I moved to the A7R5 because of the Tamron 20-40mm it just covers what I do and I was sick of changing lenses. I wish Nikon would get it.
Tempted to buy this as a backup camera to my Z9.
@taylorjacksonphoto what made you trade your ZF?
Thanks for another informative and enjoyable video. Do you think that it might be time for camera makers to stop having microphone and headphone jacks and switch to Bluetooth and/or USB-C for audio purposes? (A body like a Z6III could certainly support 2 or 3 USB-C ports.)
The two change requests seem to apply even more to the Z9, with dual CFX-B card slots and the bigger battery which could have a USB-C port.
@TaylorJacksonPhoto Seeing as you shoot some video in between the stills, how does your A7R V compare to the Z6 III for you?
So when you shoot video with no ND, do you just set the shutter to whatever? Or is there kind of an optimum higher shutter speed when you're not doubling the frame rate?
I just set it to whatever most of the time. Unless I’m moving the camera then I try and keep it proper 180
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto Thanks man!
I’ve had all the different stones except 93. And I’ve had the two for a while
The 62 has many good things, but the total lack of function buttons is annoying Compared to so many function buttons on the Sony also the screen on the a75R it’s just fantastic.
I always been a Nikon fan but I tend to use my Sony much Moore do to function buttons.
The location of fn is ok if other fn buttons. But no such thing
Please encourage Nikon to enable video recording to both card slots. It's ridiculous that they can't.
Do you mean simultaneously (might be bandwidth limited) or the ability to record photo slot 1 video slot 2 etc?
Now I am not sure if I should buy Z6III or Z8 mainly for wedding and very fast moving objects shoots.
Z6 iii, Will it be Ok with NIKON 85mm 1.4G
We'll see.
I think external recording to an m.2 NVME was a missed opportunity.
was tempted to upgrade my z6ii's for this but recent in depth reviews have shown that the half stacked sensor has a lot of impact on dynamic range - ie the DR is nowhere near as good any more. For me, that's a complete deal breaker unfortunately :(
But since they've been videos showing that it has been overblown by people. Check videos like Kelly Sparks or testcams showing more "correct" methodologies in my opinion.
@@Willymaze thanks i'll take a look
yes, i have get z9 and z8 to garbage. they have less dinamic range and more iso noise then d850 and z7ii. totally unusable camera.
What do you use for BTS when shooting your weddings?
Thinking about upgrading my z6ii to this.
100% needs to record Video to both cards.that's what stopped me buying Z9 or Z8.
Question.....does the Z6iii have backlit buttons?
Nope
Will Kimi Räikkönen still be the most resent champion from Ferrari before Nikon will allow to record video for dual card slots?
I would love to see option to move the af spot by sliding the thumb on the screen while using evf - like canon. That is such an awesome function.
That option is now available in the Z6iii.
@@doogieham Didn't know that, that is actually really awesome and useful!
Could you be interested come to Australia?Do you workshop here for weddings
is this better than the sony a7c ii?
I can day for a7cii but my cousin's a7rii is very slow. Turning it on and also af feels slow. I also heard the camera overheat when you record video.
I can’t charge my z6iii by usbc in the camera 😢. Love the viewfinder though.
The z6iii is £2700 in the UK. For £600 more I can get a z8. That’s a trickier decision than deciding if it’s time to upgrade.
Wait for Z8ii tbh. There’s some features in Z6iii better than Z8.
@@NCMEDIC216 There’s always something new on the horizon. If you keep waiting, you’ll wait forever.
@@AethersPhil Not true. I bought the Z6ii on sale and then a couple months later I realized that’s because the Z6iii was coming out. I have so much regret for not waiting.
@@NCMEDIC216 Z6 II is a great camera, so You should not have any regrets.
@@BrakDanych-f1w I have the Z6ii and while I don’t have regrets I feel like I’ve already grown out of it haha.
You say you split your time between Sony and Nikon because of TH-cam and it is not the smart thing to do. So if that was not a factor, would you just do Sony or Nikon?
Use the best tool for the Job at hand. Hopefully this can be addressed by firmware. But it could be an Exoeed 7 limitation?
In China,Z6III is on sale. Everyone think it is overpriced. Oringal price is 18999, now 16500 which is about 2200 USD
I have already shot several wedding videos with this camera. And I can say that Nikon has a long way to go to become a good camera for video shooting ((, There is no open gate, no choice of video bitrate, due to the fact that the USB and HDMI ports are located close to the screen, it becomes impossible to rotate when connecting the cables, the battery works very well and there is no overheating of the camera in 4k/60, Autofocus at the level of Sony cameras, I also want to note the good recording sound at the level stabilization of Sony cameras (not good and not bad). the dynamic range is good
great review bro,, im event photographer who really need fast AF and good skin tone, the answer is nikon or canon, sony is great at AF but their skin tone sooc not really good,
Doesn't ship with a charger. Check box contents.
Is it just me or is the output color from Nikon too yellow dominant?
You can just not shoot it in shade white balance all the time if you don’t like that look
0:01 Shooting a 4k24fps video at 1/640sec = 13.5° shutter angle ?
Yah it’s my favourite shutter angle.
@@TaylorJacksonPhoto 😂😂
Why you didn't use a ND filter ?
@paul_55672 because I notice very little difference using one. I just use a plugin if the high frame rate is noticeable. But it’s only really noticeable if you’re moving the camera or the subject is moving quickly
They are not coming with a charger !!! Luckily, I have extra from the other camera!!
Nope, Z6iii does NOT come with a charger! 😞
Nikon being a small player.. Should rather be on top of everything.. Missing small things like dual recording? Charger? On top of the sensor and ibis issues on this model? Not enough for a long wait guys. 😢
What are the sensor and ibis issues?
Always appreciate a review from someone who actually uses the camera, and isn't in a studio making an idiotic clickbait video..... (talking to you Tony Northrup).
Taylor, did you ever do the hybrid review of this camera, I've looked down your video list, but can't see it.
I haven’t had a hybrid wedding with it yet. It’s good and fast, just video only goes to a single card slot which I know is a deal breaker for a lot of people
I think it's amazing that you are out making a living shooting with the 40mm 2.0 that all the internet experts will tell you is a mediocre lens ...
They do NOT come with a charger, really dumb.
I've been using the Nikon Z6III since release day, the camera is the real deal. I will reiterate that the biggest error culprit is moving cards between cameras without resetting them. I wish you success on your endeavors.
@@jordancheek5157was that CF express B? I think the Sony recall was SD and CFE-A and those absolutely don’t have the robustness of CFE-B cards. I understand why people want to do it for peace of mind but CFE-B data suggests it’s not something to worry about.
@@livejames9374 Fair … they were indeed both SD cards, one M and one G series if I remember correctly. I agree with that, though I’d still rather not chance it personally :-)
Very poor shadow recovery, hard pass for me. Going to wait and see what Sony or Canon bring next. Sad to see the new ZV-E10 ii have better dynamic range 😅.
I uploaded a video about the shadow recovery. You have to be very bad to make it an issue
GOD am I glad I didn't wait and went back to Canon!!!
Why?
Nikon zf is nice camera but the ergonomic is not good for wedding and event photographer ,, z6iii is the answer
